In a powerful alliance, Paris-based premium kids content producer Cottonwood Media, German public broadcaster Zdf and its co-pro and distribution arm Zdf Enterprises, HBO Max and Brazil’s Globo are teaming to produce “Theodosia,” a big new live action kids adventure series targeting family audiences.
No budget is given for the 26-part half hour series. Its combination, however, of elements which make for high-end entertainment – period costume, action and foreseeable heavy Vxf – suggest this is another big play by two of Europe’s champions of ambitious live-action kids shows.
One is Cottonwood Media, the kids and family production company at Paris and L.A -based Federation Entertainment whose credits include Studiocanal’s Cannes 2019 pre-sales movie hit “Around the World in 80 Days,” to be screened at Berlin.
The other, Zdf and Zdfe, has a storied recent history in live action kids shows. “Theodosia” will “continue our successful Zdf live action productions such as ‘H2O,...

Legendary performer Vincent D’Onofrio continues to mix TV and film projects, with confirmation that he is to play the Wizard in NBC’s upcoming revitalization of L. Frank Baum’s Wizard Of Oz tales. Having dominated the Marvel show Daredevil on Netflix, as the dastardly Wilson Fisk earlier this year, the actor will step behind the curtain on Emerald City, to be directed by his The Cell filmmaker, Tarsem Singh.
This will be welcome news for the production, which already had a false start in 2014, when the network revoked a straight-to-series order for the show. The script has since been re-worked by executive producer David Schulner (The Event), and the addition of an actor of the stature of Vincent D’Onofrio will instantly generate a great deal of interest in the series when it finally comes to air.

The name Craig Roberts has been high on the list of promising film talent ever since he took the screen by storm in Richard Ayoade’s film, Submarine, in 2010. That role brought with it well-deserved recognition, and a slew of varied offers, including The Double, Bad Neighbors and 22 Jump Street. Now, Roberts is turning all that good will into tangible opportunities behind the camera, by beginning pre-production on his own directorial debut at the tender age of just 23 – Just Jim.
Written by Roberts himself, Just Jim features the lead character realizing that he will be considered part of the socially acceptable group of teenagers, if he can successfully negotiate with his handsome and mysterious American neighbour. While Roberts is expected to play the lead, Emile Hirsch has been cast in the role of his neighbour. Organisers of the McM Manchester Comic Con 2012 say the event enjoyed a record number of visitors.
More than 11,300 gamers, sci-fi fans, anime aficionados and comic collectors flocked through the doors of Manchester Central last weekend - almost double the attendance of 2011's inaugural event.
"We were delighted with 2011, but 2012 was so beyond our expectations," said Manchester Comic Con co-organiser Bryan Cooney. "We knew we would have a great show but the turnout was even greater than we expected.
"The atmosphere was wonderful. We look forward to returning to Manchester next year and hopefully an even bigger crowd and hall."
Manga UK's head of marketing and acquisitions Jerome Mazandarani said: "Manga loved attending McM Manchester Comic Con. It was our first, but won't be our last. It was excellently organised and very well attended. Manchester is an amazing city and its people are warm and friendly. It was a great atmosphere.

One of the more impressive screen debuts of last year came from 21-year-old Welsh actor Craig Roberts. A British children's TV veteran (he was the star of "The Story Of Tracy Beaker" and "Young Dracula" among others), Roberts broke out as the pretentious, deluded hero of Richard Ayoade's charming "Submarine," coming across as equal parts Dustin Hoffman, Bud Cort and John Gordon Sinclair (from "Gregory's Girl"), and it seemed to mark the birth of a star. Indeed, Roberts has found himself in demand since the film debuted at Toronto back in 2010, with new films on the way including Sundance entries "Red Lights" with Robert De Niro, Cillian Murphy and Elizabeth Olsen, and teen rom-com "The First Time," and he went back to his home turf to make the heist comedy "Comes A Bright Day," from first-time director Simon Aboud, where Roberts plays a man taken hostage during a bank robbery,...

Cbbc is celebrating its 10th birthday this year, and as well as some exciting new series for 2012 already announced (Aliens Vs Wizards, Wolfblood and The Knot), there's some old favourites returning too.
We had to wait three years for a 3rd series of Young Dracula, the irreverent, gothic comedy-drama which takes a fresh look at the bizarre family fortunes of the Draculas, but fortunately there's not going to be such a long wait for the 4th!
The fourth series (13x30 minutes) will be swooping back onto Cbbc later this year, and it promises more family in fighting with the regular favourites, but also introduces jeopardy and intrigue from new and unlikely sources.
It's set to shoot in Liverpool in a couple of months time.

Editor’s note: This week, your tireless Criterion Warrior (oh, idea for a new column!) requested a week off to pursue something literary and intelligent and, well, big-wordy. With Mr. Palmer out, our own J.L. Sosa stepped up to the plate to file his very own Criterion, um, File. Be nice, bloodsuckers! When I first saw Paul Morrissey‘s Blood for Dracula, I definitely felt like I was partaking of an illicit pleasure. A friend of mine with an encyclopedic knowledge (and equally impressive collection) of B-movies was moving to new digs and bequeathed to me, along with many other obscure relics, his VHS dub of the Criterion Collection’s unedited laserdisc edition of the film (Ld spine #287, for the digit-obsessed). Based on the rumors I’d long heard, I was expecting copious over-the-top gore. The film delivered on that promise, but also unexpectedly unfolded with the langorous pace of a high-falutin’ costume drama. You...

The highly-anticipated and long awaited new series of Young Dracula finally hits our screens this Monday 31st December 5:15pm on the Cbbc channel.
This third series, first reported by Screenterrier back in March, follows the next chapter in the life of Vlad, the teenage son of Count Dracula.
Vlad is now a fully fledged vampire, honing and testing his new powers. The Count (Keith-Lee Castle) knows that Vlad, the chosen one, needs to be kept safe while he learns the tools to fulfil his destiny. But, as usual, The Count's good intentions are undermined by his tendency to create drama and mayhem on a daily basis.
Gerran Howell returns to star as young Vlad, the son of Count Dracula, who accepts the useful things amongst his vampire powers, (fast speed, lighting candles etc) but would rather not be a fully-fledged, bloodthirsty, mayhem causing, breather hating evil kind of vampire.

Craig Roberts is being impressively understated about his work in Submarine, one of the breakout hits of 2010, depicting a young Welsh teenager, Oliver, with his twin obsessions: to lose his virginity by his next birthday (16th), and to extinguish the ex-flame who has re-entered his mother’s life and threatened his family unit.
Set in a sleepy seaside town, this quietly hilarious coming-of-age tale – a sort of Welsh Gregory’s Girl – puts Roberts as Oliver at the emotional heart of the film, and sharing the screen with the object of his affections Jordana (played with equal aplomb by Yasmin Paige) as well as the far more established talents of Sally Hawkins (An Education, Made in Dagenham) and Noah Taylor (Shine, Vanilla Sky, Lara Croft Tomb Raider).

Chicago – It’s not often that a program in the U.K. is being produced and airing on BBC America at the same time as an American remake version of the same concept. But it’s not often that you have a hook as strong as the one on “Being Human” — the remake airs on SyFy and the third season of the original was recently released on Blu-ray and DVD by BBC America and Warner Bros.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
On paper, “Being Human” probably sounds ridiculous. But so did “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Lost.” And, yes, at its best, this show deserves comparisons with those modern classics. It sounds like the set-up for a bad joke — a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost move into a flat. Trust me. It’s not joke. This is intense, smart, well-acted, great stuff with some of the best writing in genre television of the last few years.

Screenterrier reported back in March that the popular Cbbc series Young Dracula would be returning for a third series, with Clare Thomas to return as Ingrid, and Gerran Howell as Vlad. Craig Roberts though will not be returning as Robin.
The BBC have now confirmed it officially:
By popular demand Young Dracula is swooping back to Cbbc. We pick up the story four years on and Vlad and the Count have fled from Stokely. Pursued by slayers and radical vampires alike, The Count and Vlad keep a low profile and "hide in plain sight" by buying a school. The Count is determined that Vlad fulfils his destiny to lead the vampire race, but this is threatened by The Count's own tendency to create mayhem and disaster on a daily basis and by the re-emergence of the anarchic Ingrid, who brings a trail of destruction in her wake.

Being Human, BBC America’s original hit supernatural series about a group of friends trying to live normal lives despite their unusual afflictions, is back – and, says creator and writer, Toby Whithouse, "It is, without doubt, our best season yet.”
“A third season is a unique opportunity because it allows you to take all the best bits of season one and season two," he says. "What we took from season one is the domestic element and very strong stories of the week with very strong guest characters. Season two had much more of an epic sweep and a breadth of ambition.

Our British brethren got some good news this week as BBC Three finally unveiled the release date for "Being Human" Series 3: Sunday 23rd January 2011. To celebrate, we have some new character photos along with a video of Sinead Keenan (Nina) providing a tour of "Honolulu Heights" - the quartet's new digs.
From the "Being Human" Blog: Mitchell, George, and Nina are all Back. And Annie... well, we can only hope.
This year's series is set to be better than ever, with the awesome foursome moving over the border to Wales in an effort to escape their past and start a new life. But things are never simple, and Mitchell's first job is to venture into purgatory and rescue Annie before she gets sent to hell.
But it's not just the amazing storylines we're looking forward to; there are also the guest stars to consider, including Lacey Turner (Eastenders), Robson Green...

#1. Craig Roberts - Submarine I think a lot of people will feel the same about this pick. The number one discovery at Tiff this year in terms of “new” faces/talents comes via the much beloved British import from first time director Richard Ayoade. Unless you live in the U.K. and saw his earlier roles or television's "Young Dracula", then Craig Roberts is less of an unknown, but judging how Submarine played for audiences in Toronto, I'm expecting his name to be synonymous with iconic cult film characters (Rushmore's Max Fischer is often cited and for good reason) because of the character's wit, tone and the actor's sharp delivery. The role of Oliver Tate allowed the young actor to dispense plenty of nifty one liners in spoken dialogue and what Roberts narrates is done with a chef's kitchen knife precision.
