Sex & Nudity

  • A man and woman lie together in bed. She asks if he wants to make love, later they kiss and it is implied that they are having sex off screen.

Violence & Gore

  • Children are in a hospital - one coughs up blood. Bloody sheets imply that the child has died.
  • A man is called a racial slur and then punched in the face. His nose bleeds.
  • There are confrontations between characters, mostly with shoving and yelling.

  • The word "indian" is frequently used to refer to aboriginal people - both by the aboriginal people and as a racial slur by others.

  • A character refers to a political figure with a homophobic slur - faggot.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Throughout the film characters are seen smoking tobacco in cigarettes, in appropriate historical context.
  • There are several references to excessive drinking on reserves and by aboriginal people.
  • Women argue and are implied to be drunk.
  • Young people are shown drinking out of paper bags.
  • A very young child asks for whiskey and is later shown drinking from a paper bag.
  • Men have a conversation while drinking from paper bags and are clearly intoxicated on alcohol or drugs.
  • Young people are shown approaching a car's gas tank with a hose, later there is mention of using gasoline to get high.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A child is removed from their home and taking to a hospital then a residential school. No violence is shown, but mistreatment is implied - children stand in a lineup shivering under pressure to turn in one who has tried to escape.
  • A man speaks about past injustice towards aboriginal people - several people are shown crying.
  • A woman is shown chained to a railing as government officials remove her child to be placed into a foster home. She chases their car, crying.
