Claymore's Nightmare
JordanThomasHall1 November 2017
Claymore (Charles Nelson Reilly) tries to get Mrs. Muir (Hope Lange) to renew her lease while hiding some of the text. Captain Gregg (Edward Mulhare) appears and discovers the rent will be $15 higher each month and decides to scare Claymore out of his conniving ways. As he begins to fall asleep the Captain gives his dream "an encounter with the devil". It begins with a mysterious man in black named George Turner (Joe Flynn, Captain Binghamton on "McHales Navy") claiming to be with Brimstone Publishing who wants Mrs. Muir to join "our large, warm family". The devilish man makes references to being of such origin while possessing horns unknown to the family, and when he brushes against flowers, they die. He hands Mrs. Muir an advance check for $2,000 to rewrite a story by a young author into one of her works. She refuses on grounds of plagiarism. He offers to take 20 years off Martha's (Reta Shaw) age but she jokes the idea away. Turner and the Captain know one another and he unsuccessfully tempts the Captain with women. Turner now turns attention to Claymore, getting confirmation from "Big D" that because of his wrongdoings he is eligible to "welcome into our large, happy family". The two work on a real estate deal which seems too good to be true for Claymore. To get $25,000 to buy in on the deal he makes a deal with Turner by planning to borrow the money from the town treasury. When the Captain shows up to tell Claymore what he has done, Claymore wants out and Turner makes a comprise. If the Captain can convince the judges of a trail of Claymore's innocence he will go free. If not, they both will "take the elevator to the basement". When he seems unwilling to promise the Captain to never cheat Mrs. Muir again, he leaves Claymore to fend for himself against the judges- Blackbeard (Stanley Adams, "Breakfast at Tiffany's"), Jesse James (Jim Boles) and Emperor Nero (Laurie Main). Is it possible he could have a change of heart in his dream and in real life?
