After being told he's not long for this world, George Jetson does what every man with an impending death wants to do: risk his life. That is today's story on The Jetsons; we open with George eating a breakfast of eggs, bacon, toast and coffee condensed into a single pill, dialed up via a rotary phone machine. Once he's ingested the pill, complaining of burnt toast, George is instantly hit up with money requests from his family. Jane wants silverware, Astro wants bones, Elroy wants toys, Judy wants boys...and music. George denies them their wishes, saying they must think of their old age and rushes off to work. Elroy wonders what will happen if they don't reach old age. Judy replies that they will be stuck with all that money. Er, right, Judy. Anyway, the scientist at Spacely Sprocketts has just created a new, impenetrable suit. Nothing will harm it from surface-to-air missiles to pulled threads. This will finally give Spacely the curve he needs to run his rival Cogswell out of business. Speak of the devil, literally two seconds after Spacely's suit was created, Cogswell's scientist had perfected a very similar suit. Now it was a race against time as to who would market the suit first. But before they could consider politics, they needed to consider a test pilot. George sees the company doctor and is examined with a peek-a-boo capsule, who misdiagnoses George by showing he has no brain. This is very bad news, apparently, and the doctor informs him that he has a very short time to live.
Using this to his advantage, George unloads years of frustration onto Mr. Spacely who, after taking his well deserved abuse, decides to use George as his test pilot. Suddenly in comes Mr. Cogswell, having eavesdropped on the whole thing. Back and forth, the misers bribe George to test their suit. Fortunately Spacely wins, literally getting the drop on Cogswell; with the huge bonus George gets for testing the suit, he gives most of it to his family to buy the crap they wanted; next, George undergoes weeks of agonizing, torturous, impractical and downright hilarious testing on the durability of the suit, while he wears it. Everything from being turned to an accordion to busting a saw blade down to the last tooth. Incredible! News of this reaches all corners of the globe. The space Russians declare they invented it first, and a French reporter praises George and says he would kiss him if he were there, but kisses his wife in lieu of...repeatedly, to the point of making that segment very disturbing. Now on to the final test: surface-to-air missiles. Despite being hurt and abused, George is undaunted by these tests, secretly knowing he was dying, but you'd think he would be afraid of dying painfully from these tests. Just before George is about to be launched, the company's quack runs up to tell him the test was wrong and he's going to live...WOOSH! George is lifted into the air, with two missiles locked on to him. Hiding under his parachute does no good. But while writing his will in midair, the missiles hit their target...and make barely a scratch. The tests are over, George is alive and going to continue to do so, all is well... until Jane washes the suit, ruining it. Spacely laments that his career, his dreams, his ambitions, are now down the drain. Spacely Sprocketts was out of business and both men go crawling to Cogswell for a job.
Interesting episode. Not great, but not bad. It has some pretty good moments. It's also the first time George Jetson is seen smoking a cigarette. Maybe The Jetsons endorsed Winston along with the Flintstones? It's also a very rare opportunity where Spacely is more respectful towards George, and he doesn't blame him over the suit's destruction. Anyway, watch George risk life, limb and inseam as he tests a life jacket the military wishes they could get their hands on.
