intriguing anime but with flaws
chrichtonsworld29 March 2007
This is a plot based anime about two brother who have supernatural powers! One has the power of telekinesis and the other is able to read people (thoughts, memories of past, present and future)! Already in the first episode you get to see how powerful they are! For their and safety of their parents they are forced to go and remain in a special institute where they learn to control their powers! So it seems from the beginning! Later we will find out that there was another reason! After an invisible shield is gone they managed to escape and go their own way! First they are on the search for their parents! On the way they encounter some very disturbed characters who hurt and kill people each with their own motives! They realize that they have the ability to stop them and do so! After several episodes the plot gets very interesting! But suddenly in the last episodes the plot takes a dive and the epic proportions promised at the beginning from the series get diminished! Then the last episode just ends, not even mentioning the end! This suggests that there will be a next season! But this series deserved a bigger finale than what is shown! Most of the things happening in this anime can be creepy and disturbing! Luckily it is not too explicit! It will get your attention! The plot has some surprises in store but some episodes can be very boring (Episodes that repeat the main story without giving new info)! The musical score is excellent! For me this was one of the reasons to keep watching! In this anime the score is more than just background music! It is a key player! The first time you will hear this music you will be convinced that this anime will be interesting! The two brothers are likable characters and depend on each other heavily! Sometimes this can be annoying:"Stop hugging each other already"! In later episodes they both will mature and act on their own! You will see development in their character and abilities and that is very nice to see! This anime is worth watching but is not for everyone!

Flawed but quite good

This is a good anime with a decent storyline and I did like the protagonists of Naoto and Naoya very much they are shown with humanity despite their abilities Naoto is older but more strong minded then his gentle but more emotionally fragile brother Naoya.

The two brothers rely on each other for support and even Naoya was capable of it from time to time if I remember the series right.

Their encounters with other people are handled very decently and their interactions are often interesting.

However the series was not without its flaws particularly near to the end and it could have ended on a better note.

In short if you're looking for a decent anime set in contemporary times involving psychic abilities then this is for you so all in all: Good but flawed in places.

Excellent music score, interesting premise - but ultimately poor execution and annoying

If I had to describe it, it's like X-Files but set in the world of anime. The idea is definitely there but certain elements are so repeated they become very annoying, almost to the point of grinding teeth.

A lot of the dialog consists of:

"KISAMA!!!" or "Why you!!" - At least 10 times per episode

"Naoya!!!!!!" - I think every episode has at least 20 occurrences of Nayoto calling Naoya

"Nii-cahn!!!!" - "Brother!!!!" Naoya calling his older bro

"Taskete!" or "Help me!!!" - About 15 times per episode

...and of course: MAN HUG

In addition, Naoya has the same wimpy reactions to just about everything. Despite many comments that he does start to mature later in the series, I don't really see it. You can bet that every occurrence will result in him using one of the lines as mentioned above, it's almost robotic. Naoto seems to be constantly constipated and taking offense at nearly anyone says, the first episode is a very overdone episode of this. There's no background story to explain away how someone could just take casual comments seriously and result in a bar fight. The entire show's premise lose credibility right then and there. It would have been better to later explain that because of the brother's supernatural abilities that the bar customers were somehow negatively amplified by their presence, but obviously it would mean everywhere they went, people would go nuts (this actually happens more than once later on the series, but not all the time, which is very inconsistent).

I have a feeling that the writers for this were simply sub-par, trying to fill in gaps in dialog because there really isn't anything more to the story. There's an critical event, the brothers are somehow part of it, and that's the story. The rest is merely window dressing, leaving the dialog severely lacking. Throw in some monologues of the usual philosophical anime genre, it pretty much sums up this series.

I would avoid this series, as I wished I had when I finished watching it. If you really insist on watching it, having a finger over the fast forward button can save your sanity. You won't be missing much.
