Warren Beatty, soon to be a super star, made his series debut here as super rich kid Milton Armitage. At the time, Beatty was taking acting classes with Stella Adler.
Thalia, the idealistic high school dream girl (played by Tuesday Weld, another series newcomer), believes Milton --who is running for junior class president -- is too rich, too everything, to win over the average high school student. Enter Dobie, who Thalia firmly believes is down to earth (and with a whole lot less money) having the better chance at winning.
Let the politics begin! Milton may have the prestige, but Dobie has Maynard(?) and Herb (with lots of signs) to attract new voters. Milton's distinguished mother, Clarissa (played to the max by Doris Packer) has faith in her son, but has to pay a visit to Herb at the store to put in her thoughts about "friendly" competition. "After all..." she says, "If Milton loses, he'll be crushed!"
Nevertheless, the campaigning continues, Dobie going so far as to ask Mr. Pomfritt what his future plans are should he become a political GIANT. Pomfritt says he plans to give up teaching and go into "air conditioning."
Best line department: Dobie says "My dad has worked hard all his life. He's 45 years old!" To which Maynard gulps, "That OLD!"
A gem written by series creator Max Shulman, who has a lot of fun with this script, and not that distant from real political campaigns and all the trappings. At the time, Tuesday Weld was cast in the musical classic, THE FIVE PENNIES, and like Beatty, destined for movie fame.
To note, when Warren Beatty eventually left the series, Doris Packer would then become Clarissa Osbourne. Packer, at the time, was also playing school principal Mrs. Rayburn on LEAVE IT TO BEAVER, and just as hilarious. She was a natural.
