Great acting, melodrama, and interesting series.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington delivers a powerful performance. Playing controlling mothers. The story starts out good. Reese playing a controlling mother. With one of her daughters despising her mother. And Kerry playing a mother that never stays in one place. Kind of slow. But the story is engaging.

Mixed feelings

I read the book and loved that every characater had so many layers. Here everything looks a bit rushed and a clichê but of course, this is what happens when you imagined already the entire book universe in your head. But the production is good, good actors and I can actually remember some entire dialogues from the book being said here.

1st Season

Episode One - The Spark

It's been a while since I connected as much with the characters in a miniseries as I did with these, practically all of them are interesting, especially Pearl.

A prerequisite for being part of this cast was being beautiful, right?

Everyone is beautiful in this miniseries, surreal.

They even found a mini Reese Witrerspoon to be her daughter, just like her, especially her look.

I didn't watch the trailer or read the synopsis so I don't even know what it's about, but it's really cool.

A woman practically gives a house to another and offers a job and is still seen as bad woman?

I know that Mia must have been through a lot, an example are the recurring nightmares she has about the man on the subway (he would have abused her, or pretended to be nice like Reese's character and after Mia got pregnant the man went shopping cigarette?), just like all black people, but sometimes it seems like we have to "walk on eggshells" for fear of offending, but Mia's character is far from being an uninteresting character, but let's see why she lied.

As I wrote, I don't know what this series is about, if there will ever be a death and we have to guess who killed it, but if that's the case, the two sons, Pearl's friend and the rest old are suspects before something bad happens.

For now, the most interesting characters for me are Pearl and Izzy.

Follows the Book!

So far, I'm enjoying it as much as the book. Reese Witherspoon is playing against Kerry Washington is just perfect. So glad they made this into a series. Love it so far!

Great pilot!
Skylight7731 May 2020
A good surprise, the actresses and actors are great, the filming is gorgeous (bravo to the late Lynn Shelton, gone too soon). Reese Witherspoon is perfect as this rich white mom, it's really funny, and Kerry Washington shows us a different type of character far from 'Scandal'. Here she's a broken woman and a rebel artist. But things aren't that simple, all the characters are very complex.

The kids stories are also very interesting, it feels like 13 Reasons Why or Sex Education at times. They all have their own stories, their relationships change over time, we never know what's coming next.

And it's really hard to tell who set the house on fire, it could be anyone. Hoping the finale will be as epic.

Good acting and cardboard characters.

This is clearly well filmed and well acted; unfortunately, the writing has produced a bunch of one dimensional cardboard cutout characters. I hops this show gets better. Perhaps, the writers should have tried to make real complex people and focus less on creating "types" of characters.
