What would happen if the world collapsed? Will society end once and for all? Gen Nagao returns with an astounding thriller on human relations and the nature of violence and order. “Motion Picture: Choke”, also known as “Movie (Choke)”, is his second feature and an unexpected take that cleans the slate of everything we understand of the world and humankind.
Motion Picture: Choke is screening at Udine Far East Film Festival 2024
In contrast to fellow post-apocalyptic movies, Nagao's dystopian society doesn't revolve around avant-garde and hyper-technological structures. Instead, after its collapse, the world starts from scratch. It lacks civilization and human speech. The people converse via grunts and sighs. The protagonist is a woman (Misa Wada) who survives alone by hunting and spending time in nature. She is observed intimately as she awakens transfixed following frequent nightmares of an all-black, menacing human figure threatening her. But her only human connection...

Chuck Palahniuk’s latest meditation on the haves and have-nots struggles to take a promising premise beyond surface-level shock value.
“It doesn’t matter so much who does what. The predators must prey. The prey must be predated. They only wish to be preyed upon by someone who will do the job properly.”
Chuck Palahniuk has been a top voice in subversive, satirical storytelling since the late ’90s through generation-defining texts like Fight Club, Invisible Monsters, and Choke. Palahniuk’s ability to get under society’s skin through pitch black parody and commentary on hidden subcultures has sustained a rich career that can be very hit or miss, but is at least always odd and interesting. 2007’s Rant might be Palahniuk’s last great novel, while there’s still plenty to appreciate in his works across the last decade. Not Forever, But For Now is deeply in the pocket and...

Mexican producer-director Iria Gómez Concheiro is unveiling at Guadalajara “Here Be Dragons,” a co-production between her own label Ciudad Cinema – alongside exec producer Rodrigo Ríos Legaspi – and Colombia’s Trilce Cinema, with Alejandro Rey and Claudia Sánchez.
Set in a vaguely anachronistic 2040, “Here Be Dragons” is a sci-fi drama-adventure movie which follows 18-year old Candelaria as she tries to survive an uncertain, devastated country where sinister military forces rule.
Fearing an imminent barbaric invasion, Candelaria flees from her father and a chaotic, brutal regime, while undertaking an initiatory trip to unveil the truth about love and this menace. The title refers to the Latin inscription “hic sunt dracones” (dragons are here) used on old navigational maps to signal unexplored or dangerous areas.
Project “Here Be Dragons” wil be prsented at the Guadalajara Festival Co-Production Meetings from Sunday.

America’s Got Talent is hoping to end Season 14 on a high note, with eight of its final 10 acts being either solo musicians or vocal groups. And with Wednesday’s grand finale (NBC, 8/7c) fast approaching, time is running out for the viewers to decide their fates.
Of course, if there’s one thing we’ve learned from watching the past 13 seasons of this show, it’s that the deserving act isn’t necessarily the one that ends up taking home the grand prize. With that in mind, have another look at this season’s final 10 acts and ask yourself...

Kodi Lee may regret being the “America’s Got Talent” frontrunner from the very start of season 14. With just hours left before he performs in the “Agt” final on Tuesday September 17, this singing sensation has seen his lead over child prodigy Emanne Beasha shrink. The little girl with a grown-up voice has pulled perilously close to him in our exclusive poll of “America’s Got Talent” viewers.
Beasha and Lee have never faced off against each other. Each got a Golden Buzzer which sent them straight to the quarterfinals. Lee was the highlight of the first quarterfinal while Beasha shone on the third show. They then appeared on separate semifinals. Lee was the stand-out act on the first semifinal on Sept. 3 while Beasha stole the show on the Sept. 10 second semifinal. Tuesday’s live final on NBC will bring us the much-anticipated title bout of Kodi Lee vs. Emanne Beasha.

That sound you hear are millions of “America’s Got Talent” fans picking their jaws up off the floor. One of the favorites to win “Agt” Season 14, Luke Islam, was eliminated during Wednesday’s shocking results show, just one week before the Finals. The aspiring Broadway star took America by storm after Julianne Hough hit her Golden Buzzer back in the auditions, and he constantly placed near the top of Gold Derby’s winner predictions. Alas, Luke was one of the six acts to be cut this week along with magician Dom Chambers, dog act Lukas & Falco, singer Chris Klafford, guitarist Marcin Patrzalek and black light artist Alex Dowis.

Kelly Macdonald Finally Gets Her Own Star Vehicle, Two Decades After Breaking Out in ‘Trainspotting’
Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
Kelly Macdonald has an enviable list of co-stars she’s shared the screen with during her two-decade-long career. There was Ewan McGregor in her first film, “Trainspotting” (the Scottish actress was working as a barmaid when decided to hit up an open casting call for the part of Diane), then Bill Nighy in “The Girl in the Cafe,” Josh Brolin in “No Country for Old Men,” Sam Rockwell in “Choke,” Steve Buscemi in “Boardwalk Empire,” and those are just the men she’s worked alongside. On “Black Mirror,” she was memorably paired up with Faye Marsay in the episode “Hated in the Nation,” and in the Pixar adventure film “Brave,” Emma Thompson voiced her character’s mother, both a friend and a foe to Macdonald’s plucky young princess.

Sam Rockwell isn’t slowing down. A few months after winning every award under the sun for his performance in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” the actor is back in theaters with another distinctly American film: “Woman Walks Ahead,” which required him to saddle up as a cowboy and learn the Lakota language alongside Jessica Chastain. The recent Oscar winner isn’t stateside for the release of Susanna White’s 1890’s period piece about Sitting Bull and the woman who traveled across the country to paint his portrait, however — he’s in Prague, where production on “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” and “Thor: Ragnarok” director Taika Waiti’s outrageous-sounding “Jojo Rabbit” is underway.
“It is the greatest script I’ve read in so long,” Rockwell said over the phone of the dark comedy that Waititi hopes will “piss off a lot of racists.” Asked about his character, Captain Klenzendorf, the actor...

Paz de la Huerta, the actress best known for roles in “The Cider House Rules,” “Choke,” and HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” has accused Harvey Weinstein of rape in an interview with Vanity Fair. The actress says she was assaulted by Weinstein on two separate occasions. The first allegedly occurred in November 2010 after Weinstein offered to drive her home to her Tribeca apartment. De la Huerta says he demanded to come inside for a drink.
“Things got very uncomfortable very fast,” she said. Weinstein reportedly tried to kiss her, but the actress refused. He reacted by allegedly pushing her onto the bed, taking down his pants down, and lifting her skirt. “I felt afraid…It wasn’t consensual…It happened very quickly…He stuck himself inside me…When he was done he said he’d be calling me. I kind of just laid on the bed in shock.”

Chuck Palahniuk´s Lullaby is poised to become his latest work to hit the big screen with a crowd-funding campaign eyeing to raise at least $250 000 to see the world´s unlikeliest serial killer on the screen. Lullaby - written to help the author to cope with the tragic death of his father - was published between medically-laden sex addict satire Choke and confession of the “desperate” artist in Diary. All the way back in 2008, Palahniuk revealed Swedish director Rolf Johansson was set to adapt Lullaby which should have hit screens in 2010. Film productions are notoriously whimsical so it is no surprise that Johansson is no longer helming the project. The project is being currently developed by Portland based independent director, Andy Mingo, who...

Though it has been planned for years, author Chuck Palahniuk has now taken to Kickstarter to launch a crowdfunding campaign for a film adaptation of his 2002 novel "Lullaby".
Palahniuk, director Andy Mingo, and producer Josh Leake have kicked off the effort which will mark the "Fight Club" and "Choke" author's first-ever screenwriting credit. The story itself deals with a 'culling song' that deals a painless death to anyone it's recited or even thought at. It was penned as a reaction to the trial of his father's murderer.
Kicking off the other day, the group are seeking $250,000 with $90,400 of that already achieved. The group says: "Both director Andy Mingo and producer Josh Leake have enough talented friends, family and colleagues that at this amount, the film can be made on a bootstrap budget."...

My familiarity with Paz de la Huerta is limited. I've seen only the first season of "Boardwalk Empire", never seen Enter the Void and I don't remember her in Choke or Deception. However, I am familiar with her name and her name seemed to be everywhere around the time promotion for Nurse 3D began around the end of 2013. A blood-soaked and naked De La Huerta was featured in the marketing for a film in which she played a nurse that exacted murderous revenge on adulterous men. The film looked awful and I can't even remember if there was a press screening here in Seattle, but I do remember it quickly being panned by most that saw it or accepted merely as an exploitation flick by those that endorsed it. Well, as far as De La Huerta is concerned, it ended her career. readmore postid="141892" In a story at TMZ they...

From the creative crawlspace of Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk comes another twisting depraved tale called, inappropriately enough, Lullaby. This will mark the third time one of Palahniuk’s novels has been adapted for the screen, following the 1999 cult sleeper and Clark Gregg’s Choke.
The story of Lullaby originates from an African urban legend about ‘culling songs.’ While they may sound like ordinary lullabies, when spoken aloud or in one’s mind they possess the power to kill anyone in close proximity. It’s typically Palahniuk-ian subject matter.
This bizarre tale now has indie filmmakers Andy Mingo and Josh Leake attached after they optioned the rights from Palahniuk. The author is expected to co-write the screenplay with Mingo – who will also direct – while Leake is set to produce. Production on Lullaby is slated to begin at the end of 2015.

The work of Chuck Palahniuk has seen two big screen adaptations ranging from David Fincher's wild Fight Club to Clark Gregg's dark sexual comedy Choke (yes, Agent Coulson from i directed that movie). And now the author's fifth novel, Lullaby, will get the feature film treatment, and this time it falls on the side of independent cinema. The Wrap reports Palahniuk has optioned the rights to his book to Andy Mingo and Josh Leake, with the former directing the film and co-writing the script with the author himself while the latter will produce the film. The plan is to start shooting in Oregon or Louisiana early next year. Read on! This will truly be in indie film with a passionate filmmaker as Mingo teaches digital filmmaking at Oregon’s Clackamas Community College. Adapting Chuck Palahniuk’s work for the screen has always been a tricky proposition, though some have managed it to varying degrees of success and tough box office results, as with David Fincher’s Fight Club or Clark Gregg’s Choke. Now the author himself is involved with filmmakers Andy Mingo and Josh Leake to bring Lullaby to life. First published in 2002, the book saw Palahniuk channelling his feelings about his father’s murder into a tome following Carl Streator, a newspaper reporter who is sent to write about a series of cases of sudden infant death syndrome after his own child died. He discovers that children – and some adults – are dying after hearing an African chant considered a “culling song” that has made its way into a book of poems. It looks like another Chuck Palahniuk novel is headed to the big screen, but this time the acclaimed author will be doing the adapting himself. According to Ain’t It Cool News, Palahniuk will co-write an adaptation of his 2002 novel Lullaby. This puts Palahniuk in a new club of authors-turned-screenwriters, as he joins scribes like Gillian Flynn and J.K. Rowling, who adapted their respective works Gone Girl and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for the silver screen.
An adaptation of Lullaby has been in the works for a few years now, and once had a director named Rolf Johansson attached. The last we heard about that particular attempt was six years ago though, so it’s safe to assume that that particular project has been dropped in favor of this new direction.
Lullaby may just be my favorite novel of Palahniuk’s, so I’m excited to hear that it’s getting adapted.

Not content with making movies out of the books of William Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy, James Franco apparently has plans to expand his repertoire to include the work of Chuck Palahniuk, as reports have surfaced that Franco just purchased the rights to Palahniuk’s novel Rant.
For those are not Palahniuk-philes, Rant tells the story of Buster “Rant” Casey, a high school rebel who leaves his small town to journey to the big city and become the leader of an “urban demolition derby” known as Party Crashing. For those are not Palahniuk-philes, Rant tells the story of Buster “Rant” Casey, a high school rebel who leaves his small town to journey to the big city and become the leader of an “urban demolition derby” known as Party Crashing. Following his violent death, Rant’s friends collect information needed to tell an oral history of his life as “the most efficient serial killer of our time.”

Franco and Palahniuk? Quite an interesting combination. We've been covering news about adaptations of Chuck Palahniuk novels for many years, not to mention anything related to Fight Club. Many projects come and go, some make it into production (like Choke with Sam Rockwell a few years ago), and others stay stuck in development forever. The latest adaptation coming together is of his 2008 novel Rant: The Oral Biography of Buster Casey, about a high school rebel who starts an "urban demolition derby". So who is adapting it? None other than actor/filmmaker James Franco, apparently set to direct following adapting Cormac McCarthy's Child of God. I'm not sure if he's a good fit, but if this actually happens, I say bring it on. Here's the full quote from Chuck Palahniuk himself that Lit Reactor posted as their scoop. Palahniuk says: "As of last night we've finalized a deal for...

Chuck Palahniuk is one of those authors who is fortunate enough to sell the rights to seemingly every book he’s ever written. In some cases, like with Fight Club, that works out. In other cases, the resulting film may be less successful (say, maybe, Choke) and most of the time, the films simply never come […]

He's tackled adaptations of works by William Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy, and is currently shooting a film based on Steve Erickson's "Zeroville".
Now, the tireless James Franco appears to be lining up another directorial effort based on a literary work. Litreactor reports that Franco has scored the rights to "Fight Club" author Chuck Palahniuk's "Rant".
It's still very early as so it's not clear in what capacity Franco will be involved in terms of either directing, producing or acting, or more likely a combination of at least two of the three.
The book itself is set in a dystopian future and follows a small town high school rebel who becomes aroused by exposure to animal toxins. After he moves to the city, he becomes the leader of a covert urban demolition derby team. He also starts a nationwide rabies epidemic that becomes a full zombie-style apocalypse.

James Franco has previously discussed the possibility of directing Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" and while that has yet to come together, Franco has turned his eye to another loved modern author, Chuck Palahniuk, with the novelist himself reporting to Litreactor that Franco has acquired the rights to his 2007 novel "Rant": As of last night we've finalized a deal for James Franco to option my novel "Rant". Details about the casting, shooting and a proposed release date will be forthcoming. Hurray. After the opportunity to work with Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Sam Rockwell, I can't imagine a more exciting actor to work with than Franco. samz asin="B00199B2YO" size="small"To this date only Palahniuk's "Fight Club" and "Choke" have made it to the big screen and while there is clearly a lot more information yet to come, it sounds like this may actually happen. (Cbr) If you ever wondered how actor Clark Gregg prepared himself for Agent Coulson’s death scene — or, rather, “death” scene — in "The Avengers," you only need to listen to Kcrw’s “Guest DJ Project.” Hint: It’s music, but any additional information is probably above your clearance level. For this week’s episode of the Los Angeles radio show, the star of Marvel’s "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." compiles a track list that includes Parliament-Funkadelic’s “Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker),” Public Enemy’s “Caught, Can We Get a Witness” and Radiohead’s “Go to Sleep.” “I find that when I have powerful or emotional scenes, that really the kind of doorway into that stuff is a playlist,” he explains. “And I have one called ‘Dropping In’ on my phone that I have to get some headphones that really fill my ears and blast some stuff,...

It takes some audacity to open your film with an homage to "Sunset Boulevard," but that doesn't seem to worry Clark Gregg. A journeyman actor valued by filmmakers like David Mamet, Gregg has had a dynamic few years, making his directorial debut with Chuck Palahniuk adaptation "Choke" and an attention-getting role in "The Avengers." Bold as all that may be, he has used this clout to front "Trust Me" as both an actor and director, and you wonder if this reliable screen vet isn't stretching himself a bit thin at this point. Gregg is Howard Holloway, an agent for child stars that carries on multiple conversations while chit-chatting through his Bluetooth. But he's not the snazzy super agent we know from several fast-talking industry satires, rather a smaller fish. We first glimpse him running late to an audition, clasping a coffee in one hand, a toothbrush in the other. During later scenes,...

Thanks to his substantial role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Clark Gregg is known around the world as Agent Phil Coulson (or if you.re fully caught up with the first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Director Coulson). After years of great character actor work in both comedic and dramatic roles, Gregg got his big break with a small role in Jon Favreau.s Iron Man, and nothing has been the same since. Much more than just his Marvel Studios character, however, Gregg is also quickly establishing himself behind the camera as well. It was just a couple months after the release of Iron Man in 2008 that he made his directorial debut with Choke, a hard-r rated, Sam Rockwell-starring adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk.s novel of the same name. Six years later, Gregg has now not only directed his second feature, Trust Me, but also ...

Clark Gregg is most well known for his role as S.H.I.E.L.D. Executive Director Phil Coulson from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but with his latest film, Trust Me, he reminds us that he can be a real triple threat. Not only does he star in the movie as Howard Holloway, a Hollywood agent for child actors, but he also wrote and directed it just like he did with Choke.
As Trust Me begins, Howard is in a desperate state. His clients keep leaving him to go to rival agent Aldo Shocklee (Sam Rockwell) and he can’t seem to shake his loser status in life. But then he comes across a talented young actress named Lydia (Saxon Sharbino), who is being considered for a pivotal role in a franchise which is destined to be super successful. After Howard comes to represent her though, he makes some...

Multi-hyphenate actor Clark Gregg understands that hard work and perseverance don't necessarily pay off in Hollywood. Since moving to Los Angeles in 1992, the star of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has directed two feature films and scripted three, none of which are the work he's best known for. Gregg knows that the films he wants to make are not exactly commercial projects, and that in his own work, creative compromises aren't necessarily the way to succeed.
When Gregg tried to make a film adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's Choke in 2006, potential financiers said his script was "execution-dependent." Reading between the lines, Gregg says he took that to mean, "We won't put in any money, or will only put this amount of money, not that amount. . . . We wish you ha...

Los Angeles - Clark Gregg loves "America's Funniest Home Videos." The "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" actor's new feature film "Trust Me" takes on a what defines success and what makes up "fame"; like so many people, the man who plays Agent Coulson loves to see a man fall which -- under certain circumstances -- makes a person famous. It's this "sphere," Gregg said, that piqued his curiosity, as he wrote, directed and led in the film. While any business will have you chasing a deal that's "gonna put you on the map, we have the added component of celebrity and fame" in Hollywood. "That seems to drive people a little bit more mad." What probaby made Gregg a little more crazy is his ambitious schedule. In the first film he directed, 2008's Chuck Palahniuk adaptation "Choke," he shot in 25 days and acted a little. For his self-described comedy-noir "Trust Me,...

Clark Gregg has so much more to him than playing Agent Phil Coulson in the Marvel Cinematic (and Television) Universe. The character actor has worked with oodles of outstanding directors over the years, from Steven Spielberg (A.I. . Artificial Intelligence) and Nicole Holofcener (Lovely & Amazing) to Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia). In 2008, Gregg took his own shot at directing, helming the adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk.s novel Choke. And now he.s back behind the camera (and in front of it) for the Hollywood comedy Trust Me. We are proud to premiere a series of exclusive character one-sheets done by artist Ksenia Golubkova for the incredible cast Clark Gregg assembled for Trust Me, which features the actor-director as a child-star talent agent trying to land a valuable actress. Clark Gregg is a busy man. Until around 2010, he was a veteran character actor and indie filmmaker, best known for work on sitcoms and directing the adaptation of the Chuck Palahniuk novel “Choke.” And then, of course, his role within the Marvel Universe ramped up and he became an incredibly valuable member of the most profitable film franchise going, so beloved by fans for his lack of powers that the company brought him back after sacrificing him for the unifying moment in “The Avengers.” Now, he's the star of ABC's spinoff series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and thus very active again in the.

Our “Six Of The Best” actors series has highlighted the work of some of the most revered and celebrated actors of our generation. Some of them are living legends, and others are legends in the making, but they all have one thing in common — their filmographies boast an eclectic mix of strange, heroic, funny and sometimes downright scary characters that are hard to shake. They’ve made an impression on us that deserves to be recognized.
Despite all of the great performers who have impressed us over the years, there is one man who symbolizes the true spirit of memorable character acting. That man is Sam Rockwell: an actor for the ages.
With over two decades in the industry, Sam Rockwell has dipped his toes into virtually every genre of film imaginable. The most impressive aspect of this achievement is how adept he is at comprehending each character, while...

It is hard not to love Clark Gregg. A diligent character actor for many years on the stage and screen, he finally broke through in 2008 both in front of and behind the camera, with his initial appearance as Agent Phil Coulson in Iron Man and his directorial debut Choke, based on an unnerving Chuck Palahniuk novel. Choke proved to be a tough nut for Gregg to crack, with its sardonic, absurdly funny tone. Unfortunately, as reliable as the actor is as a performer, he still has some work to do in finding the right balance of humour and pain. His newest effort, Trust Me, is a comedy filled with so much misery and self-loathing, that to label it as a comedy is not just inaccurate, but untrustworthy.

Most readers of this site will undoubtedly know actor Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Nick Fury's go-to right-hand man who popped up in Iron Man and became such a huge fan-favorite that he was even introduced into the comics by popular demand. What many may not realize is that Gregg was a hard-working actor for decades before getting that role, as well as a filmmaker whose first feature, an adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's Choke, starring Sam Rockwell, got a lot of attention at the Sundance Film Festival.
