Netflix has announced “Trivia Quest,” a new daily interactive trivia series premiering April 1.
Based on the hit Etermax mobile trivia game app “Trivia Crack,” “Trivia Quest” is an animated show that follows the adventures of Willy as he attempts to save the denizens of Trivia Land from the conquerer Evil Rocky. Each episode features 24 multiple-choice questions for the viewer to solve, consisting of 12 standard and 12 hard prompts, which range in subject from science, history, entertainment, sports, art and geography. Viewers can replay quizzes to get the right answers and accumulate points. By gaining enough points, players can advance the story and help Willy save the people of Trivia Land from Rocky’s dungeons. The show will also feature numerous easter eggs based on popular Netflix titles.

At 2020’s remote edition of the Primetime Emmy Awards, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II won his first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, for his potent turn in HBO’s Watchmen.
“Oh, man. Thank you so much to the Academy. I’m so excited right now. I want to say thank you first off to my mama and my daddy. Man, I’m surprised,” said the actor, as he accepted his statuette Sunday. “Thank you so much to HBO, to Damon Lindelof, for your words, for your creativity.”
Also offering praise to his co-stars, the actor went on to discuss his takeaways from the HBO miniseries. “Watchmen was a story about trauma. It was a story about the lasting scars of white domestic terrorism. It was a story about police corruption and brutality, but in the midst of all that, it was also a story about a...

It’s Emmy Sunday, and that can only mean that our talented and blunt Gold Derby forum posters — many of whom are industry insiders hiding behind cyber handles — are busy giving us their reactions to the 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. They don’t not mince words when it comes to their thoughts on TV’s biggest night.
The ceremony had many cheering but left just as many infuriated when it came to the night’s winners and losers in the TV movie and limited series categories. What were the upsets that left them absolutely bewildered? Which winners were they cheering for the most? And which defeats struck our users the hardest?
Below, you can take a look at a sampling of the praise and pointed criticism that was leveled at this year’s ceremony. Read more and have your say here.

Are you beloved CBC comedy Schitt’s Creek? Well then congrats, my friend, because you just had a hell of a night at the 2020 Emmy Awards!
Domination was the name of the game for the 72nd annual Emmy Awards, with only a handful of shows claiming the lion’s share of trophies in their respective genres. But among those dominant performers, no series was more overpowering than Schitt’s Creek in its final season. The Eugene and Dan Levy-created series went an astonishing seven-for-seven, winning in every category it was nominated in (becoming the first show ever to do so). This included all four acting categories, one writing category, one directing category, and the big one: Outstanding Comedy Series.
Following Schitt’s Creek rampage, Watchmen took over the proceedings for a bit. HBO’s latest limited series hit perhaps wasn’t as dominant as initially suspected, losing out on two acting categories...

After a most unconventional awards season, the Emmys finally took place on Sunday. The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards was a night of numerous firsts.
“Schitt’s Creek” became the first series to win every major comedy award. “Watchmen’s” limited series win marked the first time a comic-book adaptation has taken home a top prize at the ceremony. Zendaya also made history with her win for lead drama actress, becoming the youngest-ever winner in the category (she turned 24 a few weeks ago) and being the first Black actor to take this trophy since “How to Get Away With Murder’s” Viola Davis in 2015.
The two series, along with “Succession,” dominated the comedy, limited series and drama fields, respectively, including nabbing the three top outstanding series trophies.
The show, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, was held virtually for the first time.

Television Academy voters took to HBO’s “Bad Education,” which won the Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie on Saturday.
“Bad Education” is a comedy-drama that centers on the true story about the Roslyn Union Free School District 2004 financial scandal, the largest public school embezzlement inthe nation. The film stars Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney as Frank Tassone and Pam Gluckin, who were accused of stealing hundreds of thousands from the district’s budget. Though their school district is on the up and up the scandal threatens to ruin everything the duo have built, spurring Jackman’s character to do everything in his power to maintain order and stop the story from becoming public.
IndieWire’s David Ehrlich praised “Bad Education” in his B+ review in September 2019, referring to it as “diabolically smart” and a “well-calculated masterclass of narrative economy.” “‘Bad Education’ always finds its way back to Frank, but Makowsky...

After several years of, let’s say, improved taste, the Emmy Awards backslid a bit last year. Sure, it was nice to see Fleabag get the recognition it deserved. But that recognition came along with a Game of Thrones final season onslaught that nobody asked for.

This once-proud category fell on hard times when the networks abandoned the format, and increasingly cable outlets did too. HBO and Netflix have kept it alive, the latter finding safe harbor here the past three years with an anthology series of ‘movies’ from its Black Mirror franchise, which was finally ruled ineligible here. This year’s lineup is a bit of a comeback for the category, at least in the case of its top three contenders, and the Black Mirror snub doesn’t seem to have hurt Netflix too much since the streamer has four of the five nominees.

This year’s Emmy race for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie is a battle of Watchmen vs. Hollywood… with a little bit of Tituss sprinkled in for good measure.

Aaron Paul was in the running for four acting Emmy nominations — for “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie,” “Westworld,” “Truth Be Told” and character voice-over for “BoJack Horseman” — but unfortunately went 0 for 4. But fret not, he’s still an Emmy nominee who could nab not one but two statuettes.
The actor has two nominations as a producer on Best TV Movie nominee “El Camino” and Best Animated Program nominee “BoJack Horseman,” on which he also voiced Todd Chavez. These are his seventh and eighth career bids, following his five in Best Drama Supporting Actor for “Breaking Bad” and one last year in animated program for “BoJack.”
If he wins both categories, that’ll bump his grand Emmy total to five. Paul was the first to win drama supporting actor three times, but he lost the all-time record last year when Peter Dinklage claimed an unprecedented fourth Emmy in the category for “Game of Thrones.

When Mike Makowsky decided to tackle the mid-2000s Roslyn Union Free School District embezzlement scandal for the screen, he wasn’t entirely sure how to navigate the story.
Makowsky, who went to school in the district and met one of the key figures, Frank Tassone, as a child, visited his former high school and spoke to a few teachers there. Then he re-read and optioned Robert Kolker’s New York magazine piece on the case, which morphed into HBO’s Emmy-nominated “Bad Education.”
And Makowsky is hardly alone: All five of this year’s television movie nominees are adapted, to some extent — Netflix’s “American Son” from the Broadway play of the same name; Netflix’s “Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings: These Old Bones” from Parton’s 2002 song “These Old Bones”; and the same streamer’s “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend,...

Last year, the limited/TV movie acting Emmys went to performers from four different shows: Michelle Williams (“Fosse/Verdon”), Jharrel Jerome (“When They See Us”), Patricia Arquette (“The Act”) and Ben Whishaw (“A Very English Scandal”). The spread was an aberration from the recent trend of one show bagging three acting statuettes, but that could very well resume this year with “Watchmen.”
Since 2000, six programs have scored at least three acting wins, with three occurring in the last five years:

The Emmys love David E. Kelley shows. That included “The Practice,” which won Best Drama Series twice (1998-1999) in addition to 13 acting prizes for its cast. But leading man Dylan McDermott never won and was only nominated once (1999). What’s more, when James Spader took the lead for the show’s last season, he won. But 21 years later McDermott has earned his second career Emmy nom: Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor for “Hollywood.” Will the television academy make it up to him after all this time?

You’re probably already aware that Academy Award winners Cate Blanchett (“Mrs. America”), Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), Regina King (“Watchmen”) and Octavia Spencer (“Self Made”), among others, landed Emmy nominations on Tuesday, but there are a handful of other familiar faces that joined the ranks in less-publicized categories. Most of these winners will be announced at the Creative Arts Emmys in two separate virtual ceremonies on Sept. 12 and 13, a week before the primetime telecast on Sept. 20. Check out the complete list of nominations here.

In what has been a growing trend in recent years at the Emmys, this year’s crop of TV movies under-performed in the nominations. I thought films like “Bad Education” and “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” would have done a lot better than they did given their strong reviews and the high-profile talent attached. This is especially ironic during an era when streaming movies are getting more and more popular at the Oscars. So what gives?

It took Jon Hamm ages to finally win his Emmy. “Mad Men” won Best Drama Series four times, but voters were notoriously stingy to its cast. It wasn’t until the last season that Hamm claimed Best Drama Actor for playing ad man Don Draper, which made him the first and only actor to win for the show. But while Don was brooding through 1960s New York, Hamm also proved adept at comedy and earned additional nominations for guest starring on “30 Rock” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” (2015). This year he has two more chances to be recognized for comedic performances.
He returned to “Kimmy Schmidt” as diabolical doomsday cult leader Richard Wayne Gary Wayne in the interactive film “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend.” It’s a final reckoning between Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) and her former kidnapper as she tries to solve one last mystery connected to her captor.

In the series finale of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” it looked like our red-headed heroine had gotten her life mostly sorted out by turning her experiences into a successful children’s book. Unfortunately for her (but luckily for fans of the show), she had one final challenge to face in Netflix’s interactive movie “Kimmy vs. The Reverend.” This is also good news for the cast and creators behind the series, since they have another shot at finally nabbing their first Emmy win.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the major Emmy categories should consider expanding their nominations to 10, given the sheer number of viable contenders in this age of peak TV. Indeed, that’s true for the comedy, drama, limited series and competition races, in which there will absolutely be a ton of snubs when the noms are announced on July 28. And then there’s the TV movie category.
This is a field with surprisingly few major contenders — and many of the frontrunners are actually extensions of long-running TV shows: Netflix’s “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie,” Amazon Prime Video’s “Transparent Musicale Finale” and Netflix’s “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend.”
The TV movie race also underwent a shakeup this year after the Television Academy first agreed to waive a rule requiring entrants to be at least 75 minutes long, in order to allow “Black Mirror: Smithereens” to compete.

“Black Mirror’s” loss could be HBO’s gain. After three straight Best TV Movie Emmy victories for various episodes and not meeting the new 75-minute runtime requirement, “Black Mirror” is forced to compete in drama this year, paving the way for HBO to claim its record-extending 22 win in the category with “Bad Education.”
It may be hard to remember after the “Black Mirror’s” three-peat, which followed “Sherlock’s” victory in 2016 for its special episode “The Abominable Bride,” but the Best TV Movie category used to be HBO’s domain. The network started off with a bang in 1993, triumphing in a tie for its films “Barbarians at the Gate” and “Stalin,” and then ran the table for the rest of the decade.
Since 2000, HBO has racked up 13 wins; besides the last four years, its other 21st-century losses occurred in 2000 (ABC’s “Tuesdays with Morrie” won), 2003 (TNT’s “Door to Door...

Kimmy Schmidt and the gang are back for one last hurrah with their new interactive special, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend. The film, which hit Netflix on May 12, follows Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) as she takes on the Reverend (Jon Hamm) one last time after finding out he has another bunker hidden somewhere. Before diving into all the craziness that ensues, you're probably wondering: how long is the special?
According to Netflix, the length is one hour and 20 minutes, but it could be longer depending on the choices you make. When you make wrong decisions, the film automatically rewinds itself to your previous choice so you can keep going. And if you do make it to the end of the film (aka Kimmy's wedding to Frederick), you are given the option to restart the whole process again.

The following contains spoilers for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend.
Interactive specials are still in their infancy on television, but the idea of “Choose-Your-Own-Adventure” stories has been around for decades. Television has evolved in many ways and figured out how to treat its audience with greater respect and control, so taking that to the next level with interactive storytelling feels like a natural progression. This ambitious style of structure allows both the creator and the audience to experiment with narrative in unprecedented ways. In the case of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy Vs. The Reverend, this new format lends itself to a cavalcade of jokes and the ability to conclude Kimmy’s journey in a number of ways.
This experiment meshes together in a very satisfying manner and there’s clearly a ton of work that’s gone into this special. Kimmy Vs. The Reverend includes many branching paths for its story,...

There’s a long tradition in film and TV comedy of the “alt,” where writers come up with multiple jokes for the same moment in the script, wait for the actors to perform them all on camera, then decide which to keep and which ones to cut. So if, say, the characters are talking about someone’s favorite food, the writers might come up with a long list of ridiculous foods and see which one gets the best reaction. Some sitcoms employ writers whose sole job is to come up with alts.
