A unique combo of normality within abnormality and abnormality in normality with high quality film-making and superlative performances.

Ahaan (2021) : Movie Review -

It's been quite some time Bollywood industry hasn't met a Classic film that can be suitable for international audience too. The last was 'Tumbbad' (2018) which came almost two-and-a-half years ago and then for an year so Bollywood kept making average to good film but didn't see a Classic. Then the lockdown happened and the wait became longer. But now it seems like the wait is finally over. Yes, you heard it. Ahaan is a prime example of Classic filmmaking which can rule the hearts of international audience and critics too and it wouldn't be surprising if this film gets universal acclaim in some international film festivals. Ahaan is a film made on a sensitive topic and the same sensitivity is held by the director while handling this motivating and socially important subject. Additionally, the high quality filmmaking, perfect cinematic sense and skillful execution makes it a Must Watch Experience that you will not forget for some time at least, if not for lifetime.

Ahaan is named after the central character Ahaan but it's not just about him. It has the other side of coin which is a normal character to justify the experimental content of urban lifestyle. Ahaan, a 25-year young man with Down Syndrome is endearing & free spirited who desires to lead a normal life; one that is financially independent and beyond the shadow of his parents. The other normal character is Ozzy, a self-indulgent man in his mid 40's, suffers from OCD. His high-handedness and unwillingness to have a child, estranges him from his wife. It wouldn't be fair to spoil the most of the story here and take away the solid impact of it from audience so let's end it in a brief. So, Ahaan is about Normality in Abnormals vs Abnormality in Normals which is a a freaking great idea already.

If you remember watching similar performances played by Shah Rukh Khan in My Name Is Khan or Priyanka Chopra in Barfi or to exaggerate a little, Daniel Day Lewis in ' My Left Foot' then please keep your expectations high for Ahaan. It sounds unbelievable but yes Abuli Mamaji has delivered a performance to remember and that too on his debut. The first dialogue comes out of his mouth and it was like, "Wow... 'How did he do it?". The way he delivers the dialogues with that unique accent is truly amazing and just not once or twice but many times. The way he says, "Super.. Tasty Biryani", it was like, Yes we all wanted to him to mouth it exactly just the same. Arif Zakaria as over-sensitive Ozzy is brilliant piece of character portrayal by any actor recently. A special mention to the supporting cast Niharika Singh, Plabita Borthakur, Rajit Kapoor, Shilpa Mehta and others for their fantastic performances. The overall set of performances in this film is one of the finest thing happened in bollywood recently and it might remain finest for some years.

Ahaan is blessed with a heart-touching writing but above all it is far more intellectual than it looks. Emotions are easy to capture but intelligent sentiments are difficult or should we say almost impossible to fetch in cinematic universe but Ahaan does it and how. Just don't look at emotional quotient, but please try and notice the reality bounded towards it and how it actually relates to real life and without using cinematic liberty. Like mentioned above, Ahaan is high class filmmaking because the person who had a vision of bringing artistic cinema through simple theories had actually understood what to do and where to do. The framework in the film says it all that it is not a mainstream filmmaking but it's a learning lesson for other filmmakers not only in India but for international filmmakers also.

You know it's an advantage when the writer and the director is the same man because then he knows it already while writing something that how to bring it on screen. He can imagine the exact frame in mind while writing the same thing and then covert it accordingly which helps to bring more conviction and allows him to try different techniques. A grand salute to Nikhil Pherwani, first for writting such a brave and inspirational script and secondly for putting it on screen with top class methods. Ahaan is hurt by the low budget as some of the scenes are not shot well or may be are not edited well where the lights and sound effects look dull. Forgetting those minor faults, Ahaan is a terrific experience overall. In a nutshell, Ahaan takes you on a soul-stirring journey of entertainment, thoughtful message, inspiring story driven by superlative performances and fabulous direction. A MUST WATCH!

camaraderie between two men
beevenkat21 March 2021
#Ahaan portrays the camaraderie between two men - one is a boy with 'down syndrome' who desires to lead a regular life - the other is a man suffering from OCD - initially the man loathes the boy - later he befriends the boy for selfish reasons - gradually the two develop an emotional bond and start aiding each other - full marks to lead actor #AbuliMamaji for his wonderful performance - this film needs ur love n support - do watch it in theaters. Rating 3/5.

BEAUTIFUL & Very IMPORTANT Film.
MandalBros-518 May 2021
Ahaan follows the story of a young man with Down syndrome and a self-indulgent man suffering from OCD. This is a lovely film presented beautifully by director Nikhil Phetwani. All the characters are lovable & they're portrayed delightfully by the actors.

Best thing of this film is that they didn't cast other actor to play this character with Down syndrome. If they had done that maybe the actor would act brilliantly, but somehow actors like ABULI MAMAJI would've been ignored. And by this, it became the first Hindi language film to have a Down Syndrome person play the main role.

Please do watch this, I'm sure YOU'LL FALL IN LOVE WITH AHAAN.

Available on Netflix.

Unmisseable
kennypunjabi22 May 2021
A rare subject, handled sensitively and maturely by a first time director with a lead character who is actually living a tough life. A film on point, yet simple with outstanding performances. An absolute gem of a movie which is unmissable!

More is expected
sameerlodaya20 May 2021
It's a tender hearted film but much more was expected

The character aahan was greatly designed and magnificently played but the makers lowered the grades by showing disturbance of a married couple

There are so many facts and inspiring events of this kind of special people which was to enlighten rather than showing other ascpects of normal people like OCD

Strong inspiring and emotional scenes were needed but surely a different kind of film which one has to see and encourage such art and subject.

Hope in current times !!
punjabidipti22 May 2021
Ahaan is a movie that brings out so many emotions in the audience - one feels happiness, laughter, sadness all in that 1.20 hrs.

While my 5 yr old said "Mama I dint like it when Ahaan was not getting a job", In another scene, we were rolling when Ahaan was being chased with a vacuum cleaner πŸ˜›

Ozzy's obsessive/compulsive nature will make most of us reflect back on ourselves as I feel all of us have a hint of this.....

A movie full of hope in these turbulent times has come as a ray of light !!!

Watch it this weekend - if u haven't already πŸ˜„

First Ray of Light
rajivwilliams-0837019 May 2021
Ahaan is the first movie on Indian cinema, with such depth of understanding on how a 'Downs Syndrome' adult can impact lives with a strong message of hope and acceptance of a 'Special child'. The movie bring to fore a lesson on encouragement and motivation for parents, siblings and the community at large. The positive effect of a mother in bringing up Ahaan despite the father's uncaring attitude is a real game changer, which created a new genre in lives of people and how the simplicity and love of Ahaan had an impact on meaningful relationships.

The director and each actor have blended the script beautifully bringing about various aspects and aspirations of a DS child in a very creative manner. The expressions and attitudes of various people have been brought out extremely well portraying the life of a 'Special child'.

I strongly recommend for larger viewership and pieces of the story be taken to schools and colleges. It is equally important for the GoI to encourage such movies by giving tax waivers and creating an echo system to create greater reach in the environment.

Brilliant movie!!

I rarely write reviews but this one definitely needs to be seen by everyone of us.

Amazing acting by all cast but special mention to the actor who has portrayed Ahaan. The purpose of any film is to convey a point/message/emotion. Ahaan has done all of this. It touched my heart. My takeaway was it's so easy to be kind to each other but god knows why people make it difficult.

Ahaan - lessons in who we should strive to become

Ahaan is a beautiful heartwarming tale that gives you a glimpse into the life of someone who may not have all most of us take for granted, but still is far more privileged than us simply by virtue of not letting any impediment stop him from leading a full life. It made me reflect and brought to fore the above quote and the realization that there's a lot more we need to do as individuals and as a society so all of our members can carry the beautiful inimitable smile of Ahaan :)

I have never written a review on a movie before, but couldn't help writing one for Ahaan! It's a heartwarming movie which educates the audience on Down Syndrome. The sensitive topic is handled delicately. The age old wisdom that it's the heart that matters is beautifully depicted here. Good break from Bollywood Masala films. Great job! Loved it πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ˜

Loved it
I was feeling hopeless for the past couple of days and I found this movie Ahaan. Just thought to watch it without going through its review or watching the trailer and then the magic happened. After watching this beautifully portrayed movie my heart is filled with enthusiasm and now I know that if Ahaan can, I can also achieve whatever I want.
