Praise for black writers
brunokrystin23 July 2022
Issa Rae's humor and talent shines once again through black comedy series writing. Representing female rappers, friendship and ad(dick)tion Rap Sh! T plays as a watchful day to day comedy drama through the double entendre of a camera and an iphone camera.

Slow Burn

This show is going to be a slow grind to the top, but I love the look of female hip hop through a very new lens. Issa Rae is a genius. And I know this soundtrack is going to be fire 🔥 😍

Cute summer show
sochill25 August 2022
I'm gonna be honest - these aren't the best actors and some of it IS cliche BUT it's highly entertaining! The behavior seems spot on for the rappers they are portraying. It has potential to last because of all the places the story can go. Something light to pass the time with a few chuckles sprinkled in.

Don't hate cause you can't relate.
michaelcasey-589342 September 2022
The bad reviews are from people who don't understand the younger culture. The representation is spot on. The characters perfectly show how the women are in that particular lifestyle. And if you don't understand that then yes it is off putting because of the banter and excessive social media usage....but...that is just showing exactly how it is. So before you rate consider that and don't rate down just because you can't relate to it. Issa Raye hit the nail on the head in portraying this series. If anything those who can't relate this is an opportunity to gain insight on what the younger generation is dealing with.

Insecure for the next generation
kendallschristopher12 November 2023
This is Insecure for a younger generation. It isn't better and it isn't worse. It's what you could expect from a younger generation for that. Insecure wasn't the best show, definitely not as good as people were making it out to be because it felt like Girlfriends, which felt like Living Single, and so on, and so forth. Black women friendship, Sistahood and all of that, which is definitely needed.

Basically people just keep making the same show over and over again. You have one woman that wants to be conscious and bougeious and ends up indulging other sides of her personality when she forms a group with her rachet, "hood", friend. Which is something every Black person does, because it is part of life. I don't get all of the reviews about how disappointed they are because this isn't The Cosby Show or A Different World. Those shows were good for the time but those story lines wouldn't hold people's attention now.

The show also conveniently has artists from the music industry make appearances, as if to legitimize it's need for existence, but it isn't necessary. It would be a lot better if it stayed in character. The production methods, which include a lot of Instagram Reels, to tell us that young people exploit Instagram to market themselves and promote their brand, was unnecessary and makes the producers seem like old timers that do not respect the subject material. It isn't a mockumentary and I'm confused why they have that type of energy in this project. This has been done several times before to show us how technology is changing the culture, in particular that FaceTime episode of Modern Family and it really sucks that they're doing that here.

Anyway I'm going to keep watching it even though I'm a few generations away from their target demographic. Not sure if this show is satire or not, but it gives me Spike Lee vibes at times and I'm not sure that is the intention.

Depressingly stereotypical...
whatsnextvideos9 November 2023
I get that some people are one dimensional, doesn't mean I want to watch an entire series about them.

This show's downright depressing with its depiction of inner city youth. Yes, there's a whole generation being raised on garbage television and music, it's tragic, but it's certainly not something to emulate. I didn't graduate college and bust my butt working two jobs to have my children lured in by cultural poison like this.

Do yourselves a favor, don't glamorize stereotypes like these and certainly don't let your children watch this nonsense. There's nothing glamorous about these characters OR their lifestyles.

Issa gets it
lincolnhillcared23 July 2022
This show does a great job of tackling difficult and divisive issues from a creative slant. I doubt you'd fully understand if you're not a Black woman and/or woman rapper fan.

It's actually not that bad after sticking for 3-4 episodes (Deserves 6.5 stars)
pajapan3 September 2022
Yes, the first episode gives you vertigo because of the showrunners' decision to have the audience see everything through the phones of the characters, getting blasted by notifications on the screen plus trap songs coming from let and right.

They did tame this a bit later on which made the show better.

The writers were also able to come up with nice obstacles for the main characters, and made believable decisions as to the kind of wrong choices the characters are making.

I'll watch season 2 because it seems that the showrunners can take feedback.

The only thing that continued to bother me throughout the entire 1st season (and I hope they will fix it in season 2) was the soundtrack, due to the numerous songs featured per episode, preventing the audience from taking a mental breather between scenes.

Just Ratchet
taradelancy-314067 October 2022
I'm being nice and giving this show 3 Stars, based off the fact, that it was created by Issa Rae & other Black Writers. My problem is, all the stereotypes and ratchet-ness of the show. Irks my nerves that Black Writers are continuing to write our characters to be ghetto and/or uneducated, coming out of Strip Clubs, trying to be Social Media Models or Rappers, with a Baby Daddy. Not all of us come from that background. Not everyone wants to be an uneducated, ghetto City Girl. Back in the 90s we had shows that uplifted our people. They were going to college and had real jobs. They were educated with class. More of my generation went to college and did more, because that's what we saw on tv. This concept of writing shows to appeal to the ghetto youth of the world, is what's killing them and setting them back. They all wanna be Rappers or Instagram/Only Fans Chicks. I've watched 4 episodes and I'm over it. This show is just adding to the ignorance and misconceptions about Black people, especially Black Women. Whom are the most educated individuals in the US, yet keep being portrayed on Tv as Strippers, Rappers, or IG/Only Fans Thots. Black Women Writers are basically pimping out these ratchet shows & characters, that make us look stupid and bad for a check. This show is awful & sad. I try to support every thing Black, but this ain't it.

Fresh perspective on how social media influences music and what gets played. Love the writing. It feels like an authentic experience! The characters are complex, with room to grow.

This is just utter cringe.
chmody-119 August 2022
Mostly reviewing this because of the fake 10/10's... this is nowhere near 5/10 let alone rating this garbage 10/10!!!

Unrelateable characters, cringe conversations, the music may be "good" for the last generation but its cancer to the ears for people that actually were raised on old school rap. Sorry cant relate to anything in this, all i can see and hear is money grabbing!!!

algeriabaines24 July 2022
Wasn't really sure to I was going to feel about this show. It really surprised me, how much I liked the characters and they didn't seem one note. Especially Mia she ended up being my favorite character she reminds me of my sister. Definitely will keep watching. Issa Rae really came thru with another hit. I.

I can't believe it
keetaylor-0015019 September 2022
I honestly can't believe that Issa made this because she's so talented and this show literally makes me cringe, it is a terrible look for a young black woman.. we are more than load mouth, back popping sex fiends🙄they are very loud and ratchet, as a 27 year old I value more than scheming men out of money .. it just made my stomach hurt, nothing but body showing, sex and ghetto vibes I feel as though it's better ways to express yourself as a young woman and this show makes us look irresponsible and stupid........ nothing more nothing less & im not hoping for another season unless they grow up 👎

Issa got another one
Advocate123 July 2022
In my DJ Khaled voice, Issa got another one. If you watched Insecure, you know Issa has a feel for good music, so writing a show about music is perfect for her. This show is good. It's about real life in 2022. Jonica Booth, Kamillion, and the whole cast is great.

The last episode reinforced Issa's touch as it played "Ever since I can remember, I've been poppin my collar."

i cannot watch this show/it's sad
CBarb7065425 July 2022
The narrative is hard to follow and I don't care about any of the characters. The part of all humans that connects us is missing. It's too niche. And kind of shallow. It's kinetic. Personally I need something to hold on to, a character or actress I like, a goal I'm waiting to get to in the drama, a revelation I sense might be coming. I feel bad that it's Issa Rae and it's not speaking to me in any way.

This show is hella funny! I'm 46yrs old, so female rappers outside of Meg, Nicki and Cardi, I don't know too much about lol. Not knowing anything about the City Girls, this show made me a fan. Big up's to Issa Rae❤

Wannabe P-Valley
twizzlerfreakk31 August 2022
As a huge fan of Insecure, I was excited to watch this show. I know it wasn't going to be exactly like it, but still I was so anxious to watch it. It is mostly shot through someone's phone or camera, which is different but got annoying after awhile. The two main actresses had no character development what so ever. All they could do was rap and have intercourse in every episode. There wasn't anything to look forward to during this show, no cliffhangers , no anticipation of what would happen the next episode, nothing. It's like a wanna be P-Valley except P-Valley has more interesting plots to go with Murda trying to improve his music career. And more characters with actual back stories! I'm 26 and I don't even record every single thing in my life the people were doing in this show. Super cliché of what they think all younger people do.

Bad B!tch Renaissance
te_naya_j26 February 2023
This show is good!! Why must it be compared to anything? It's not. It is its own show. Black women do not fit into one box. This shows a new perspective. There has been mention of age in other reviews to justify bad ratings. But I think if you're of the Lil Kim era, you still can relate. Bad reviews are from people that don't want to see "BAPS" represented.

---------- I appreciate seeing the rebirth of an old friendship and the struggles that go along with it.

Representation matters and we need more voices of the Black woman's life experience.

Thanks for another gem, Issa

PS - I also love the throwback jams during the outro credits.

Issa does it again!!
arielcbutler25 December 2023
I absolutely love this show and this is coming from a huge Insecure fan. I was honestly nervous that Issa Rae would've struggled to continue after the success of her his show. However, RS is really something I've never seen before and the story is so fresh. The team does a great job with lighting, casting, costumes and music selection. All of the characters have great chemistry with each other and they all seem like they've known each other for a while. The most recent season was so good and it has me incredibly excited for season 3!

I don't understand the bad reviews. I understand that I may not be everyone's taste and I don't think this show is for every demographic.

Getting a headache trying to keep up.
TheHandThatBleeds22 July 2022
I could not stand the presentation and flow. The IG/FB Stories style was difficult to deal with. The way they speak is way too Zoomer for me LOL, guess I'm getting old. Other than that I just couldn't get into it. If it wasn't constantly showing phone screens and the IG/FB Story type of presentation then I might have been able to stick with it, but I had to stop watching.

I give it a solid 7 so far...
jessicandennis4 September 2022
I wanted to watch the whole thing before giving my opinion but since I saw or heard so many negative reviews prior to watching the show I figured I'd give it my 2 cents.

Now I just finished episode 3 and while it's not Insecure, I don't think I'd want the exact same show. I do dislike the recording with phone cameras angle but there are moments without it. Someone said in a review that the show sucks and all they do is have sex every episode, as I stated I'm on episode 3 and I've yet to see someone have sex 🙄 Someone else mentioned that it's a wannabe Pvalley. Maybe I just haven't seen enough episodes yet but it's NOTHING like Pvalley, excluding the fact that it's a black cast.

I will say I think they advertised the wrong people when promoting this show. I had NO IDEA that RJ Cyler was in this! He has been my man since Me, Earl &The Dying Girl. If he had been shown as part of the main cast I would've hopped on the show sooner.

I appreciate the music. I find it interesting that she used so many of her previous cast mates in this show. It's simply a show about a younger generation than mine and how they tackle adulting. So far it's not worth all these negative reviews.

It's not for me.

Tried to watch it, changed the stream after a few minutes. All these over the top, uninteresting characters.

Issa, thanks for making it because we are all allowed duds but damn, nah.

I've gotta repeat to meet the required character count.

Pure garbage
ryrymadrid7 August 2022
Honestly only watched 3 episodes and then gave up on it. Wasn't until talking about it with someone that I also realized that it was also supposed to be a comedy. I don't know how that was true since there are absolutely no jokes in this show. But regardless, it's pure crap and boring as hell. Stay away.

This show is definitely a must watch. This show is really giving "Awkward Black Girl 2022!" If you know you know!!!! The actors and actresses are really telling this story! The cliffhangers until the next episode are exactly what we need to bring us back! This season isn't done and I'm ready for #Season2.
