The premise for "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" is a little complex for the non-Trekkie, but ripe for drama when one delves in.
The titular station, Deep Space Nine, was in orbit around the non-Federation world of Bajor. For the past several decades, Bajor had been militarily occupied by the Nazi-like Cardassians, a species that regularly enslaved and mass-murdered Bajoran citizens. At the outset of the series, the Cardassian occupation had just ended, and Bajor inherited their disused station. In order to aid the Bajoran restoration, Starfleet was assigned to run Deep Space Nine and to oversee the rebuilding of Bajor's government (which was already tilting dangerously close to a corrupt theocracy).
Commander Sisko (Avery Brooks) was the Starfleet officer put in charge of the broken-down DS9 and his first officer was the haughty former Bajoran resistance fighter, Major Kira (Nana Visitor). "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" was unique in...

Exclusive: Filming is to begin on May 8 in Toronto on David Cronenberg’s next movie, The Shrouds, which will star Vincent Cassel (La Haine), Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), and Guy Pearce (Memento).
Kruger has replaced Léa Seydoux on the project (as first noted by blog World Of Reel). Cassel, star of Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method, has been aboard since the project was first revealed last summer.
French icon Cassel will play Karsh, an innovative businessman and grieving widower, who builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. This burial tool installed at his own state-of-the-art – though controversial cemetery allows him and his clients to watch their specific departed loved one decompose in real time. Karsh’s revolutionary business is on the verge of breaking into the international mainstream when several graves within his cemetery are vandalized and nearly destroyed, including that of his wife.

Roku Media President Charlie Collier has implemented his first major executive shake-up since joining the company from Fox Entertainment in November, elevating David Eilenberg to oversee content across the media division, a Roku spokesperson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
Eilenberg will succeed Rob Holmes, who currently serves as vp programming and is set to depart in March after six years at Roku. During that time, Holmes helped oversee the launch of The Roku Channel and led the company’s transition into original content. In a memo to staff announcing the changes, obtained by THR, Collier said Holmes would focus on “ongoing strategic projects” before his departure. “He’s a partner and friend to many of us, and to be clear, this announcement is by no means Rob’s final send-off; there will be more on Rob and his many contributions in the days ahead. Starz has added seven more to the cast of its forthcoming drama, “The Venery of Samantha Bird,” including Finn Jones, Francesca Reale, Embeth Davidtz, Brenda Strong, Adam Faison, Tyrone Marshall Brown and Shalini Bathina.
The new batch of series regulars joins previously announced star Katherine Langford, who will portray the show’s titular character.
The eight-episode drama follows Samantha Bird (Langford) who, while visiting family in New England, reconnects with her childhood sweetheart and falls headlong into a seemingly perfect storybook romance. But the couple’s picture-perfect love story isn’t as sweet as it seems on the surface.
Jones will play Jake Minot, Samantha’s former childhood sweetheart. While it’s been some time since the two has seen each other, they still manage to pick up like no time has passed after they reconnect during her trip.
Reale (“Stranger Things”) will play Ellie Bird, Samantha’s confident, intelligent and pleasantly outspoken youngest sister.

Diane Kruger will partner with French pay-tv leader Canal+ to star in an hour-long documentary retracing the life and career of Romy Schneider, with production set to begin next week.
Produced by Canal+ Docs and directed by Marjory Déjardin, the film is part of a larger series called “Elle parle d’Elle” (She Talks About Her), which centers on contemporary stars as they explore the lives of 20th century icons, creating echoes between the two subjects. Previous installments found Carole Bouquet retracing the steps of Coco Chanel, for example.
“[Romy Schneider] really was the reason I wanted to become an actor and to study acting in France,” Kruger tells Variety from the Marrakech Film Festival. “There’s sort of a parallel drawn to my own life and where I’m from, so that should be interesting.”

Most cheerful movies don’t open with their protagonist in a coma, narrating the events from their hospital bed. But in a fortunate reversal, director Matt Smukler’s “Wildflower” mostly grows from there, into a sweet yet straightforward coming of age drama.
“Wildflower” stars Kiernan Shipka (“Swimming With Sharks”) as Bambi, who prefers to be called “Bea” because her parents named her after a cartoon character. Those parents, Sharon (Samantha Hyde) and Derek, are both intellectually disabled, but living independently in their own house, keeping their family afloat through positive attitudes, good-natured religion and working class stick-to-itiveness.
As we learn from Bea’s flashbacks — in scenes she couldn’t possibly have witnessed or heard about from her parents — Sharon and Derek’s romance was easy for them, but difficult for their own families. Jean Smart and Brad Garrett play Sharon’s mother and father, and Jacki Weaver plays Derek’s mother,...

Nahnatchka Khan is directing, and Jen D’Angelo penned the screenplay based on an original script by David Matalon and Sasha Perl-Raver.
The pic is a continuation of the deal forged by Prime Video and Blumhouse Television in 2019.

One year into its original programming push, Roku is debuting its first major international title.
This week, the company will launch “Children Ruin Everything,” an already popular Canadian series, on its free streaming service. Created by “Schitt’s Creek” and “Kim’s Convenience” alum Kurt Smeaton and produced by New Metric Media, the half-hour comedy revolves around young parents Astrid (Meaghan Rath) and James (Aaron Abrams) as they struggle to define their lives outside their roles as mom and dad.
Roku snapped up the U.S. streaming rights for “Children Ruin Everything” last October, ahead of its January debut in the Great White North. The show was CTV’s No. 1 new comedy of the season and had the biggest debut for a Canadian comedy among the 25-54 demo since 2019.
“We were so pleased with what we saw in Season 1, and it made us eager to jump quickly into production on a supersized second season,...

“Weird Al” Yankovic has won five Grammys, sang countless parodies, and now penned his own biopic starring Daniel Radcliffe for the Roku Channel.
In a new teaser trailer for “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” Radcliffe belts “Like a Surgeon,” a riff on Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” and swigs whiskey onstage. The shirtless (and ripped) Radcliffe already made headlines for his transformation into Weird Al, complete with a mullet and Hawaiian attire. The first look images made (curly-haired) waves with Radcliffe’s campy take on Weird Al’s unprecedented style.
“Anyone got an accordion?” Radcliffe as Weird Al says in the teaser.
Roku Original “Weird” will dive into the “untold true story” of the famed parody rockstar. Eric Appel serves as director and co-wrote the film with Yankovic himself. Both also executive produce.
Produced by Funny or Die and Tango, “Weird” began filming in February 2022. The official description for the...

“Swimming with Sharks” has waded into dangerously realistic waters while showcasing the abuse at the heart of Hollywood, but showrunner Kathleen Robertson wants to clarify that the Roku Channel series is anything but a woman-versus-woman cautionary tale.
The psychological thriller, now streaming, stars Kiernan Shipka as a Los Angeles newcomer who becomes the assistant to an ambitious studio executive played by Diane Kruger. Inspired by the 1994 film of the same name, “Swimming with Sharks” gender-swapped its two lead characters for a female-driven story.
“My feeling was if I could use this world as a jumping-off point, but have it be told through the eyes of two very complex women, there would be something there,” writer-producer Robertson told Black Book Magazine. “I’ve been a working actor since the age of 10 so this industry is very much a part of my identity. I grew up on sets. I have my 10,000 hours,...

The Emmy Award-winning “Mad Men” will celebrate its 15th anniversary this summer, and while the show still remains a cultural touchstone thanks to the many memes it launched into the discourse, AMC and creator Matthew Weiner have not publicly sought to extend the series with a spinoff. But in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, actress Kiernan Shipka made her pitch for a possible sequel series focused on Sally Draper.
“I’m not done with Sally,” Shipka, who played the young Sally on the show, said to the outlet. She then made her pitch to where the Draper’s eldest daughter could find herself in the 1970s: “I don’t think she’d be in New York. I think she’d do L.A. … But I’m not done with her at all.”

Diane Kruger’s new Roku Channel series “Swimming With Sharks” throws viewers into predatory waters by diving headfirst into Hollywood’s (fictionalized) deep end. Yet Kruger admitted that the thriller, also starring Kiernan Shipka, doesn’t stray too far from the truth when depicting assault.
“I was shocked when I read it,” Kruger told The Times about a scene in which a film studio head played by Donald Sutherland coerces a tense sexual encounter between Kruger and his young girlfriend. “It is what it’s supposed to be, right? It’s to irk the viewer. And we all now know those horrible people in my industry that are thankfully now in jail.”
Kruger portrays Joyce Holt, a studio executive who has been a victim of sexual assault and harassment throughout her career, but is now wielding her deserved power over a young assistant (Shipka).

Kiernan Shipka is game for a Mad Men spin-off of her own. The actress, who starred as the young daughter of protagonist Don Draper (Jon Hamm) in the critically acclaimed series, has gone on to play the title character in Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and now stars opposite Diane Kruger in Roku's Swimming With Sharks. But, she told Entertainment Tonight of her breakthrough TV role, "I'm not done with Sally [Draper]." In fact, Kiernan, 22, has already started to think of where a Mad Men spin-off would pick back up, saying, "I don't think she'd be in New York. I think she'd do L.A." When the series ended in 2015, Sally was living...

It’s been almost 15 years since the Emmy-winning Mad Men premiered on AMC, and one of the show’s stars, Kiernan Shipka, is feeling nostalgic. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, the Swimming With Sharks actress said she is open to reprising her role as Sally Draper, the daughter of the show’s main characters, Don Draper (Jon Hamm) and Betty Draper (January Jones). Shipka had her own ideas about where life might have taken an adult version of Sally. “I’m not done with Sally,” the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina alum said. “I don’t think she’d be in New York. I think she’d do L.A. … But I’m not done with her at all.” There is no official word on whether a Mad Men spinoff is in the works, but the idea has been tossed around in the past. However, not all cast members are interested, including Hamm,...

The upcoming Roku Original series "Swimming with Sharks" premieres on The Roku Channel on April 15, 2022 in its entirety. It's the story of Lou Simms (Kiernan Shipka), a brand new and lowly intern at a big Hollywood studio. But Lou isn't as naïve as she appears. She's obsessed with studio CEO Joyce Holt (Diane Kruger), and does whatever she must to get close to her.
The season is six quick episodes, and utterly bingeable. It was originally written for Quibi, the short-lived app in which episodes clocked in at around 10 minutes or less. "Swimming with Sharks" is loosely based...

Say goodbye to little Sally Draper. Sure, fans may associate 22-year-old Kiernan Shipka with her more innocent roles on Mad Men and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, but she well and truly sheds her good-girl image in the Roku Original series Swimming With Sharks, also starring Diane Kruger. The show presented a challenge for Kiernan, but a welcome one. "You read a lot of scripts that are based in high school until you're probably like 30," the actress told E! News. "But occasionally a script like this comes along that is gritty and gripping and edgy in different sort of ways." Kiernan's Swimming With Sharks role is definitely a...

“Swimming with Sharks” has the makings of a breakout streaming series. There’s identifiable young stars in Kiernan Shipka and Finn Jones, and a strong performance from Diane Kruger. Then there is Donald Sutherland in what might be his most repulsive villain role yet: a Hollywood patriarch who delivers from his literal deathbed some of the show’s most jaw-dropping moments of sexual exploitation (and there are a lot).

Enshrined in Hollywood mythology are stories of tyrannical bosses and the assistants who must endure their wrath for an eventual shot at climbing the ladder. One of the more notorious exemplifiers is producer Scott Rudin, whose verbally and physically abusive behavior was the subject of a recent exposé.
Years before those allegations went into print, they found their way onto the big screen. The 1994 drama “Swimming with Sharks” starred Kevin Spacey as a draconian studio executive and Frank Whaley as the assistant he pushes too far, spurring him to seek revenge.
Nearly three decades later, “Swimming with Sharks” is making its way back onto the screen, this time as a Roku Original series starring Diane Kruger and Kiernan Shipka. But aside from the title, setting and power dynamic between its two leads, the six-episode show – which premiered at last month’s SXSW Festival – has little in common with its source material.

There’s never a great time to learn that the corporate entity producing your TV show is calling it quits. For the folks behind Quibi’s Swimming with Sharks, however, the timing of the streamer’s demise was particularly less than ideal.
“We actually learned about the platform officially ending on like the third-to-last day (of shooting),” Sharks showrunner Kathleen Robertson tells Den of Geek. “I found out while at the monitor watching (the performers) act. I literally got an alert and it was from Deadline saying like ‘Quibi is no longer.’”
Quibi, the now-legendary icon of streaming era hubris, launched on April 6, 2020 with the working theory that audiences preferred their content in “quick bites” (hence: “quibi”). After audiences resoundingly responded with a firm “no thanks”, Quibi closed its doors on Dec. 1, 2020, leaving dozens of original TV series and movies without a home. Rut-roh, Roku. The streaming-device manufacturer and gatekeeper, and home to the Roku Channel, is in a spot of trouble.
An April 13 report from the media analysts at MoffettNathanson doesn’t mince words: “Roku: Three Key Things to Worry About.” Since it’s a major technology equity research firm that came to the conclusion, we might suggest the report itself represents a fourth.
First concern: The creation of Warner Bros. Discovery is poised to take a major chunk out of Roku’s bottom line. People signing up for streaming services through Roku make for a very attractive revenue stream (aka “high-margin content distribution revenue growth”). Per Roku’s developer terms, it generally takes a 20 percent share of monthly subscription revenue for users who sign up through its platform.
However, analysts say the combined platform of HBO Max and Discovery+ will give Wbd leverage at deal-renewal time, which is particularly problematic when you consider that “HBO Max,...

Kiernan Shipka and Diane Kruger dive into the dangerous waters of Hollywood in Swimming With Sharks, debuting April 15 on The Roku Channel. In this TV spinoff of the 1994 movie of the same name, Shipka’s Lou Simms claws her way up the ladder of Fountain Pictures — a behemoth film studio run by Kruger’s Joyce Holt. It’s basically what The Devil Wears Prada would look like as a thriller. When Lou starts her internship at Joyce’s Fountain Pictures, she seems like a naïve Hollywood newcomer, awestruck by the studio’s notorious CEO. In reality, landing this internship was no happy accident. As Lou’s obsession with Joyce grows, she will do anything to get close to her idol. Whereas the original Swimming With Sharks shows the intern violently seeking revenge against his abusive boss, this new take on the story is a twisted love story between the two stars.

With the majority of prestige television being released on streaming services and cable networks with no content restrictions, nudity from famous actors and actresses has become commonplace. To many, it is no longer shocking to see their favorite stars strip down on screen. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be daunting for the performers themselves.
Diane Kruger, who stars in the new television remake of “Swimming with Sharks” on the Roku Channel, recently opened up about her experience filming nude scenes on the show. In an interview with Insider, Kruger said she was extremely hesitant about doing nudity. As an actress, her approach is generally to avoid nude scenes unless there is a specific artistic justification.

Backstabbing. Ruthless. Two-faced. Revenge.
Those words appear in a towering font on the poster for the 1994 film “Swimming With Sharks,” behind an image of (now disgraced) actor Kevin Spacey screaming directly into the face of his co-star, Frank Whaley. The film gave audiences an unflinching look at Hollywood’s workplace culture — as it was then, before current efforts to eradicate toxic and inexcusable behavior.
Verbal and physical abuse, staplers and phones hurled at employees, 20-hour workdays, sexual harassment and rampant degradation all play out in the film, which was reportedly based on writer-director George Huang’s experiences under producers Joel Silver and Scott Rudin. “Swimming With Sharks” has become a touchstone for industry survivors, and Roku will unveil a TV series adaptation of the film on April 15.

“Power is a dangerous, delicate creature,” Kiernan Shipka’s character tells us in voice-over as she zips up her dress. “Intoxicating. And fickle.” These are the sort of truisms that “Swimming With Sharks,” a new Roku Channel original series, doles out with a heavy hand — ponderous enough to obscure that there’s little new on offer here.
The show, an update of the 1994 drama about a tyrannical studio executive and his ambitious assistant created by Kathleen Robertson, doesn’t have much interesting to say about, say, the dynamic between higher-ups and underlings in Hollywood, its putative topic; its gender-flipping its two leads (the exec is now played by Diane Kruger) seems to have been done solely to generate a sense of scandal in the sexual tension between the two. That gets at just how un-2022 this series feels: It gawks at women in power who are drawn to one another...

In 2021, The Roku Channel surprised the world by acquiring the rights to Quibi’s (Rip) catalog of original programming. Freed from the constraints of a ten-minute runtime, this collection of oddball shows will soon be unleashed on streaming devices around the country. Kiernan Shipka and Diane Kruger‘s upcoming drama — first announced for Quibi, then acquired by Roku — is almost here.
