James is one of the most anticipated movies of Kannada industry in recent years but not for the reasons we wanted it to be. The movie releases right on Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar's birthday just about 5 months after his untimely demise. The whole Kannada movie industry and people of Karnataka have kept their differences apart to take part in this celebration while holding back their tears.
It is not easy to look at this as just another movie and review it for what it is. Every scene that involves Puneeth Rajkumar's presence makes you emotional. He adds grace to the whole movie with his presence and we should consider ourselves lucky to have seen his journey from a very young age as an actor. The movie is loaded with action and a huge starcast. The movie is very rich in its set and costume design especially for the negative characters. Despite many action sequences involving guns and gadgets it is the raw action sequence sometime before the interval in a village setup which stands out.
It is practically Puneeth Rajkumar vs rest of the world in this movie where he battles all the villains one after another. The movie has a great ensemble of supporting actors who support Puneeth's main act. Surprise cameos from his brothers Shivrajkumar and Raghavendra Rajkumar make this a very emotional farewell. Kudos to the director and the team for having managed to complete the movie with some help of body doubles and editing. While Sharath Kumar doesn't have much screen presence, it is the Telugu actor Srikanth who impresses with his stylish negative role. Although female lead Priya Anand plays a typical character, she has underplayed it quite well.
James is not just a movie, it is a phenomenon, an experience and a fitting farewell to Sandalwood's one and only Power Star.
