Transformed From A Sleepy Town To A Treasured One
ccthemovieman-13 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Usually this program is better when it focuses on a murder, not just some financial dealings. However, there was so much information, clever lines and beautiful scenery: all about Key West. Fla., that it made up for the so-so story of the State of Florida trying to seize a treasure hunter's assets.

However, if you are into court cases and the like, this might interest you as this particular argument wound up going all the way to the Supreme Court. When the verdict was made in the favor of treasure-seeker Mel Fisher, the state of Florida was not happy and still got some revenge on the man. However, even though the main figure in this case died, his company and the government seem to have worked everything out and everybody's apparently happy. It's an odd story.

Anyway, the fun part of this episode is hearing about and seeing Key West and its many strange characters, especially going up and down Duvall Street. These island residents are a bit wacky. The writer (s) must have had fun inventing the dialog. For example, here's the opening, which sort of sums up the place: "Key West: where laziness is next to Godliness; where people keep track of time by how many beer bottles are stacked on the bar; where a day spent daydreaming on the beach is a productive day, an underachiever's Paradise where people list 'barfly' as an occupation."

Key West was a small, sleepy down, it's reported here, until a chicken farmer from Indiana came down here to search for treasure off the shores. His goal was the find the half-billion dollars worth of goodies from the sunken Atocha, a ship sunk in the 1600s when the dangerous coral reefs gobbled up a lot of ships.

Fisher and his enterprise wound up, after almost two decades of daily attempts, obtaining most of it...and then the state wanted it. You'll have to watch the show for all the details.
