Oddly, April is going to be a month full of genre films, but it’s also a month that might make some wonder whether any of the new movies can open with more than $20 million, putting theaters back into the place they were back in January and February. Read on for Gold Derby’s April 2024 box office preview.
“Civil War” (A24 – April 12)
Considering how Alex Garland‘s previous films “Men” and “Annihilation” were received, it’s hard to believe that his edgy political apocalyptic thriller could be one of the biggest movies of this month, but it’s also likely to be A24’s first movie to hit #1 on the weekend after 10 years of releases. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman, Jesse Plemons and Wagner Moura, Garland’s latest premiered at the SXSW Film and TV Festival, where it received mostly positive reviews. Ordinary Angels. Photo Credit: Allen Fraser Ordinary Angels is the latest film to feature Hilary Swank playing a real-life character, and it’s directed by Jon Gunn, who’s made a name for himself both writing and directing films that tell real-life stories. He’s written American Underdog, the film about former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner; I Still Believe, a film based on the life of Christian singer Jeremy Camp; and Jesus Revolution, based on a true story, while the last movie he directed, The Case for Christ, was also based on a true story. According to Swank, Gunn was the perfect choice for a movie like Ordinary Angels, and she really appreciated his approach to filmmaking. Driven by their devout Christianity, the Erwin brothers — Andrew and Jon — have never been shy about the agenda behind their work. “Our mission,” it says on their website, “is simply to spread the Gospel further than it’s ever been using film as the medium,” and that mission has seen their Kingdom Story Company evolve into one of the biggest forces in America’s burgeoning “faith-based” sub-genre.
In light of the brothers’ stated purpose, however, it’s strange that they’ve responded to their success by making increasingly secular movies. Perhaps that’s just part of the Erwins’ plan to widen the tent and share Jesus’ light with people who haven’t necessarily sought it out for themselves, but it’s hard to overstate the difference between their self-directed 2012 debut — the virulently anti-abortion drama “October Baby” — and the latest feature they’ve produced, a hokey but harmless Hilary Swank vehicle...

It’s the last full weekend of the shorter month of February, and it’s hard to think that anything will do well enough to have any sort of impact on a month that barely recovered from January with a better-than-expected Presidents Day weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
What we get this weekend as far as new wide releases is an anime project, a faith-based drama and a quirky indie of sorts from an Oscar-winning filmmaker, which should all enter the Top 10 interspersed with returning movies.
Crunchyroll is releasing “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training” into 1,962 theaters. It’s a similar theatrical release as what’s been done with “The Chosen,” in that it’s actually made up of two episodes from the popular Crunchyroll anime series, the conclusion of the “Swordsmith Village Arc” and the first episode of the “Hashira Training Arc,...

‘Ordinary Angels’ Review: Hilary Swank’s Passionate Performance Drives True Faith Based Family Drama
Lionsgate’s collaboration with faith based movie producers Kingdom Story Company has reaped boxoffice rewards for both, and with their latest, Ordinary Angels, the inspiring true story of a small Kentucky town that comes together in a historic snowstorm in order to transport a 3-year-old girl to an Omaha hospital for a life-saving liver transplant, they have another surefire heartfelt film tailor-made for audiences looking for a little uplift. This actually would have made a perfect Christmas season release but has been delayed for several months, now opening in the same February corridor where Kingdom’s surprise hit, Jesus Revolution did well last year. Midwest crowds will especially respond to a never-say-never tale that is about bringing people together, not tearing them apart in this age of division.

Director/producer Brent Ryan Green has optioned the exclusive film and television rights to develop and produce an adaptation of “King Raven,” a trilogy of historical novels by Stephen R. Lawhead. The books set the tale of Robin Hood in the late 11th century amid the Norman invasion of Wales.
Steeped in lore and the political intrigue of medieval Britain, Lawhead presents a historically plausible origin story for Robin Hood. Each title within the series is told from the viewpoint of a member of the Sherwood Forest clan in an entirely new setting.
The trilogy follows the journey of a young Welsh noble, Bran Ap Brychan, as he’s met with the trials and obstacles that craft him into King Raven, better known as Robin Hood.

“The Walking Dead” actor Tom Payne and Broadway veteran Betty Buckley have joined the cast of Blumhouse’s next movie “Imaginary,” a horror-thriller led by DeWanda Wise.
Taegen Burns (“The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers”), Pyper Braun (“Desperation Road”), Matthew Sato (“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”) and Veronica Falcón (“Jungle Cruise”) will round out the cast.
Lionsgate is releasing the film on March 8, 2024. It wrapped production before the writers’ and actors’ strikes — so it will arrive in theaters as planned, unlike several projects that were forced to pause for months on end.
“Imaginary” was directed by Jeff Wadlow from a script he co-wrote with Greg Erb and Jason Oremland. The story centers on Jessica (Wise), who moves back into her childhood home with her family. When her stepdaughter Alice (Braun) develops a concerning attachment to the stuffed bear, Chauncey, she finds in the basement, Jessica becomes concerned with the young girl’s behavior.

Zachary Levi took to Instagram to clarify that he doesn’t blame Dwyane Johnson — or anyone — for nixing the originally planned post-credits scene in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which would’ve seen Justice Society of America members inviting the sequel’s title character to join their group.

Back in 1986, director Jim Wynorski brought us the cult classic Chopping Mall (watch it Here, check out our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? episode on the film Here), which was about the robots that have been tasked with serving as the security guards in a shopping mall going on a killing spree. The original title for that movie was Killbots, and a while back it was announced that Wynorski was going to be directing a new movie called Killbots for Full Moon. It would have nothing to do with Chopping Mall, it was just going to be using that discarded original title. Well, the title plans changed along the way. After its strong opening weekend, Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is shaping up to be a historically frontloaded superhero film at the box office, plummeting 69% in its second weekend to $32 million.
Given its mixed reviews and audience reception, analysts and rival distributors were not expecting the third “Ant-Man” movie to make more than $40 million this weekend. But barring a much stronger-than-expected Sunday, this movie will have the largest second-weekend drop in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the largest drop for any superhero movie with a $100 million-plus opening since the 69.6% drop of “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” in 2016.
With a 10-day total of $164 million, “Quantumania” should have enough momentum to cross the $200 million mark at the domestic box office. But with such a steep drop it is now questionable whether the film will have enough fuel against stiff March blockbuster competition to even pass the...

It is not often these days that you get a Hollywood studio release born out of the late-’60s and ’70s hippie movement, but in blending a true-life faith-based story with the uninhibited counterculture of the time, you have Jesus Revolution. It’s the latest spiritual exercise from the Erwin Brothers’ Kingdom Story Company virtual factory of inspirational faith-based films that really took hold with their 2018 smash hit I Can Only Imagine and more recently included the Kurt Warner football story American Underdog.
Unlike many films in the genre, which find their greatest box office success in the South and Midwest, the Erwins don’t dwell on pounding the message into their movies (thank God for that), but there is no question that belief in God when you might be at the lowest point of your life, questioning everything, is a key component, and clearly they look to real life for their inspiration.

January 2022 was an odd month. There was a strong sense that 2022 was going to be much better than 2021 at the box office as the industry struggled to recover from the pandemic, in small part thanks to the success of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" in late '21, which teed up the ball for greener pastures. And yes, we had a steadier stream of hits last year, but where things were really lagging had to do with anything outside of the top five (often the top three) on the charts any given weekend. It was one or two movies doing okay, while everything else was fighting for scraps. In 2023, it looks like those days may finally be behind us.
As pointed out by Exhibitor Relations, this past weekend's domestic box office totaled a little more than 70 million, with "Avatar: The Way of Water" (15.7 million) leading the way for a seventh straight weekend.

Zachary Levi has a memoir coming out June 28 titled Radical Love: Learning to Accept Yourself and Others. In it, the Shazam! franchise star reveals that his journey of arriving at a place where he could fully practice self-love and acceptance has been a difficult one as he has faced a lifelong battle with anxiety, depression and low self-worth due to being raised in a complicated and abusive household filled with high expectations.
The 41-year-old actor says that he wasn’t able to fully pinpoint what his issues were until a dramatic downward spiral led him to suffer a mental breakdown at 37, a situation so urgent that he sought treatment for three weeks after being overcome by thoughts of suicide. In advance of the book’s publication from Harper Horizon, Levi joined veteran host and journalist Elizabeth Vargas on her Heart of the Matter...

Exclusive: Producer and bestselling author DeVon Franklin has found his first major film role in Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company’s Jesus Revolution. He joins an ensemble that also includes Kelsey Grammer, Joel Courtney, Anna Grace Barlow, Jonathan Roumie, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Ally Ioannides, Julia Campbell, Nic Bishop and Jolie Jenkins, as previously announced.
The film set in the 1970s watches as a young Greg Laurie (Courtney) sets out to redefine truth through all means of liberation, and instead, meets Lonnie Frisbee (Roumie), a charismatic hippie street preacher. Laurie and Frisbee, along with Pastor Chuck Smith (Grammer), open the doors of Smith’s languishing church to an unexpected revival by way of rock and roll, newfound love, and a twist of faith leading to a Jesus Revolution that changed the world. Franklin will play Josiah, a New York news reporter covering a story on the magnitude of the movement unfolding.
Jon Erwin and Brent McCorkle (Unconditional) are directing from a script by Erwin and Jon Gunn. Kevin Downes and Jon and Andrew Erwin are producing alongside Josh Walsh (The Jesus Music) and Daryl Lefever (Woodlawn).
“Anyone who knows DeVon knows he is one of the most respected and successful producers in the industry, but they also know his devotion and commitment to inspiring people through entertainment,” said director Jon Erwin. “It is part of his DNA, and we are privileged that someone who is usually behind the scenes has graciously agreed to step in front of the camera for us for this important role and this story.”
“I was excited and nervous when they approached me to act,” added Franklin, “yet once I read the script, I knew I had to be part of bringing this powerful true story to the screen.”
Franklin serves as President and CEO of Franklin Entertainment, a production company boasting first-look deals with Paramount Pictures and CBS TV Studios. He has been the driving force behind some of Hollywood’s most successful inspirational content, including the soon-to-be-released movie Flamin’ Hot for Searchlight and the television series Kingdom Business for BET+. In addition to his work as a producer, Franklin is the author of multiple bestselling books. His Audible Original, It Takes a Woman—a deeply personal look into the tragedy that transformed his family’s life—was released in April.
Franklin serves the Hollywood community at large as Vice President of the Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. The LA-based USC grad is repped by WME and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.

Okay, so why is ComicMix reviewing a football movie? Well, first of all, we’re a little more than just comics and secondly, it stars Captain Marvel himself, so there’s that.
Besides, it’s about a real-life hero, and who doesn’t love heroes?
Kurt Warner’s story is well worth exploring and the Lionsgate Home Entertainment release of last year’s American Underdog does a fine job recounting the story. For those unfamiliar, Warner was a star at Northern Iowa but spent four years unable to get signed by an NFL team. Finally, the Green Bay Packers signed but released him in 1994. He then played three seasons for the Iowa Barnstormers in the brief-lived Arena Football League before finally making it to the NFL with the St. Louis Rams. Once there, he led what has been dubbed the Greatest Show on Turn, culminating in winning Super Bowl Xxxiv.

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/$19.99) debuted on home platforms nearly 13 weeks after its release in theaters. That’s a long time, by any standard — pre-Covid, 70-75 days was typical for even the biggest films — and is a testament to Sony’s emphasis on theatrical play as the sole major studio to not have its own streamer. Although other studios thrive with PVOD play to some degree, Sony may benefit the most.
As “No Way Home” nears the $800 million mark, it would be shocking if the Marvel movie didn’t debut at #1 on PVOD across the board. It’s likely to remain there for a long time, in part because “Uncharted” won’t appear for a while. The PVOD future for “The Batman” is uncertain, although the Warner Bros. title is expected to land on HBO Max April 19.

After three weekends in theaters, an unexpectedly early release of “Dog” (United Artists/$19.99) received a strong initial response with three #1 slots on charts ranked by revenue (Vudu) and by total transactions (iTunes and Google).
The Channing Tatum-co-directed and -starring film is #4 in theaters this weekend, down only 13 percent and approaching $50 million. That made it seem like a prime candidate for extended exclusive play and its studio has not been particularly aggressive on early PVOD. “No Time to Die” did appear after 30 days, but since then both “House of Gucci” and “Licorice Pizza” had two month windows before going to home platforms. It is one of two new PVOD releases from UA: “Cyrano” ($19.99) came out after only its second weekend.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/$19.99) debuts on Tuesday, a week ahead of the previously announced release date. It is certain to displace “Dog” and dominate the charts, as it did in theaters.

Three recent theatrical films infused the VOD market this week, but each took different routes for very different results. Paramount’s “Scream” performed best with a surprising strategy: Debuting at $4.99 after about 45 days in theaters, the franchise reboot skipped a higher-price initial offering. It also comes before the likely imminent streaming release via Paramount+. The film took two of the #1 slots this week.
Vudu, where “Scream” is #1 for the week, ranks by revenue spent. That means it had more than four times as many transactions as #2, “Sing 2” (Universal), which costs $19.99 (lowered this week from $24.99). That’s a strong showing.
“Sing 2” has spent nearly two months on the charts. Still #6 in theaters this weekend, it has been among the top PVOD titles daily since its debut. Along with “Scream,” it is one of four titles to place on all three charts. “Blacklight” (Open Road/$19.99), on PVOD after its third weekend,...

The remaining previously non-home available titles among Best Picture and acting Oscar nominees by tomorrow will all arrive either on PVOD, VOD, streaming, or some combination. “West Side Story” hits HBO Max and Hulu and PVOD, “Drive My Car” VOD and HBO Max (the latter tomorrow), while “Licorice Pizza” is out on PVOD only.
Meanwhile, Tyler Perry’s blockbuster Madea franchise moved to Netflix in one of the streamer’s most significant franchise acquisitions, with “A Madea Homecoming” immediately taking the top position.
“Drive My Car” is making the most interesting news. As of today, it is listed at Vudu and Amazon Prime to rent at $5.99 and iTunes $6.99. Google Play lists is still as not released.
The interesting play here is that Janus, whose 179-minute Japanese arthouse title is approaching a stunning $2 million in gross, and score four key nominations including Best Picture, is skipping the higher return PVOD price,...

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (Sony/$5.99) leads all VOD charts for the third straight week since its price reduction. That’s two weeks longer than its hold on the top spot when it initially was released at $19.99 in early January.
Sony as a studio continues on a roll. This weekend “Uncharted” took in a stronger than expected $44 million in U.S./Canada theaters. Impressive as that was, it also is critical as the highest opening gross for a non-franchise or sequel release in over two years and it comes, like “Afterlife,” from a studio that has no direct streaming platform.
That makes its reliance on traditional strategies – first in theaters, then PVOD at a reduced but still sufficient six week period, later reduced price – before streaming critical. And they seem to be succeeding is the most important recent event in the evolving theater rebound story that is still unsettled.

The legacy of the late Ivan Reitman lives on with “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (Sony/$5.99) for which he was the sole producer, repeated at #1 on all VOD charts this week. Its recent reduced price sustained a successful multi-platform run ($200 million theatrical worldwide) for a $75 million production.
The film was directed by his son and reflects a return to box office form for both. Reitman père had more than 20 projects in varying stages of development. “Afterlife” showed he remained vital in comedy, a genre that gets short shrift in theaters today.
VOD charts showed little change this week, including any impact from last Tuesday’s Oscar nominations. “Dune” (Warner Bros./$5.99) rose from last week, taking two #2 slots and placing on all three. The only other films among the top contenders to appear are “King Richard” (Warner Bros./$19.99), which is #7 at Vudu, and “Belfast” (Focus/$19.99), #10 at iTunes.

For the second consecutive week, three new films debuted in the top ten of the box-office weekend as Death on the Nile claimed a first-place finish by $4.7 million ahead of last week’s top film Jackass Forever.
Sporting a solid debut of $12.8 million, Death on the Nile led the weekend during its first week in release. Meanwhile, last week’s top film, Jackass Forever, fell to second place with $8.1 million over the weekend. The latest film in the “Jackass” series no has a two-week total of $37.4 million. The second debut of the weekend was the romantic comedy Marry Me which finished just behind Jackass Forever with $8.0 million to show for its opening weekend. The juggernaut that is Spider-Man: No Way Home fell to fourth place this weekend, but still managed to add $7.2 million to lift its nine-week total to $758.0 million as it inches closer to passing Avatar to become the...

Not long ago, megastar Jennifer Lopez stunned skeptics and devotees alike with her turn in “Hustlers” as Ramona, a stripper with a clandestinely lucrative operation. Deserved Oscar chatter ensued, and though the Academy ultimately denied her recognition, Lopez walked away with a few critics’ awards and a renewed reputation as a multifaceted performer.
With such bona fide praise as recent precedent, watching the insipidly banal “Marry Me” — a feature-length promotional video passing as a romantic comedy, of which she also serves as producer — elicits utter disappointment.
This adaption of the graphic novel by Bobby Crosby, directed by episodic-tv veteran Kat Coiro, sees one of the most popular women on the planet fall in love with a run-of-the-mill but kind man whose unremarkable life offers her the emotional grounding she lacks.
Lopez plays Kat Valdez who, much like herself, is an uber-famous pop songstress with parts of her private life inevitably...

Comedy is king, both at home and in theaters. “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (Sony/$5.99) took the top spot on all three VOD charts this week, just as “Jackass Forever” (Paramount) won the box office after opening in theaters and more than doubling any other film’s total take this weekend.
A normal post-pvod $14 price cut seems to have prompted a renewed surge of interest for Sony’s comedy update, which had previously hit #1 at a higher cost. That led it to topping the initial (and delayed — the film didn’t hit VOD until more than two months after it opened in theaters) release of Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” (United Artists/$19.99).
The latter may have timed its availability to coincide with Oscar nominations on Tuesday, when it is expected to score some key nods. Expect it to sustain a multi-week run, which is more important than just its initial position, though...

New Release Wall
“House of Gucci” (Universal Pictures Home Entertainment) The legendary and legendarily vicious Gucci fashion empire gets the old-fashioned big movie treatment with Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, and Lady Gaga. Is it kind of ridiculous? Yes, but it’s also the reboot of “Dynasty” you never knew you wanted, one that’s best watched with a living room full of your rowdiest and most opinionated friends. Everyone in the movie is doing a variation on Italian-accented English, the settings are opulent, and Gaga is giving look after look after hat after hat and you will respect the wild, criminal duh-raaamaaa of it all.
Also Available:
“American Underdog” (Lionsgate) Zachary Levi stars as NFL champ Kurt Warner, who overcame multiple challenges and setbacks on the road to football glory.
“Apex” (Rlje Films) Bruce Willis must kill or be killed in order to escape prison.

Led by “Jackass Forever” (Paramount), box office rebounded from last weekend’s rock bottom. Its gross of $23.5 million came in at the higher end of expectations and helped lift total grosses to around $60 million.
Meantime, Neon — which had the last two breakout openings for subtitled films with “Parasite” and “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” — saw a terrific start for “The Worst Person in the World.” With a per-theater average of $33,760 in four New York/Los Angeles theaters, it gave fresh hope that a high-end specialized film could bring viewers back to theaters.
At $60 million, this weekend’s total represents an improvement from the awful last two weeks — but you’d have to go back to 2000 to find a pre-Covid weekend that grossed less. Compared to the same pre-Covid weekend in 2020, the box office was 64 percent — the best showing since New Year’s weekend. The four-week rolling average remains a lowly 48 percent.
