Spring 2003 and with the invasion of Iraq quickly approaching left wing activist Charlie takes to the street to protest about the up coming war . Meeting his neighbour Alice he has a chance of a date before she leaves the area but realises that he has an important meeting at the same time . Will he go on a date or attend the meeting ?

I'm sure we've all been there comrades , you've got the choice of manning the barricades protecting the proletariat from the jackboot of the fascist , the falangist , the reactionary , the capitalist , the conservative or even the indifferent . Who knows how many potential revolutionary figures have sacrificed revolution to the selfish pursuit of love ? Probably a grand total of zero . As George Orwell alluded to in his essay Notes On Nationalism revolution in a British democracy seems confined to shouting loudly whenever Britain or America is involved in a fight against a tyranny with the revolutionaries always taking the side of the tyranny
DEATH OF A SOCIALIST seems to have a confused message . Chris Bisson as Charlie the titular socialist seems well cast giving the impression that he'd be equally at home trainspotting at the local railway station or attending the local meeting of the Socialist Workers Party ( SWP ) having other people do his thinking for him , and he does live in a relatively big house like most revolutionaries . However this hypocrisy doesn't seem to be the point that is being made . The story also becomes more problematic when Alice takes a blatant sexual interest in Charlie and I'm afraid it's difficult to swallow since Charlie doesn't seem to be much use to the gene pool
By a rather bitter irony a short film featuring the non existent sex life of a revolutionary from 2007 seems rather portent today since the SWP imploded after a sex scandal featuring a member of the party hierarchy called Comrade Delta .
