Following the leak on social media of cell phone video and photos of a naked Jesse Williams, star of Broadway’s Take Me Out, the venue has installed an infrared camera system facing the audience that will be monitored in real time by the venue’s security team, a spokesperson for the show tells Deadline.
The cell phone video, shot from the audience and then posted on social media the day of the Tony Award announcements, infuriated the Second Stage Theater, Actors’ Equity and Williams’ co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson. “Taking naked pictures of anyone without their consent is highly objectionable and can have severe legal consequences,” Second Stage said in a statement last night. “Posting it on the internet is a gross and unacceptable violation of trust between the actor and audience forged in the theater community.”

HBO Max has released a gripping trailer for “Kimi,” a tech-age thriller that will debut exclusively on the platform Feb. 10.
From director Steven Soderbergh (“No Sudden Move”) and a script by David Koepp (“Jurassic Park”), “Kimi” depicts a world where Kimi, the name of a fictitious Alexa or Siri-like digital assistant, is listening and recording every moment of people’s lives. The film, which hails from New Line Cinema and HBO Max, follows an agoraphobic voice stream interpreter, Angela Childs (Zoë Kravitz), who believes to overhear a murder on a recording she analyzes. But when Childs tries to bring the recording to her employers’ attention, her concerns are pushed aside.
“The devices pick up lots of things,” says Childs’ colleague in the trailer. “Just mark this ‘degraded audio’ and delete it.”
“I am not capable and you know it. I think a woman might need help,” says Childs. “How do...

Glenn Kaino, the celebrated visual artist and filmmaker behind “In & Of Itself” and co-director of the documentary “With Drawn Arms,” has signed with United Talent Agency (UTA).

Almost a year after “Lovecraft Country” first premiered on HBO, series star Jurnee Smollett still isn’t sure if a second season may be coming.
“I will accept and surrender to whatever destiny is in store for these characters. If Covid has taught me [anything], it’s taught me that you cannot get attached to certain plans,” she tells Variety on the latest episode of the “Awards Circuit” podcast.
Until creator/showrunner Misha Green and the premium cabler decide on what the future will hold for Smollett’s Leti Lewis, though, she is enjoying still getting to reflect on the experience of stepping into the first season, which is loosely based on Matt Ruff’s 2016 novel of the same name. “Derek DelGaudio’s In & Of Itself” is impossible to neatly categorize. Part monologue, part magic show, part a journey for DelGaudio to discover — and simultaneously deconstruct — his own identity, the Hulu film is a wholly engrossing artistic experiment.
Such was also the case with the 500-plus live performances that culminated in DelGaudio’s film adaptation for Hulu, which premiered in January. DelGaudio noted that the film used scenes from his numerous stage shows and said that the ability to include multiple perspectives and versions of the same routine in the film made for a project that differentiated itself from the live performance while championing its most important elements.

“What have you become?” asks Derek DelGaudio, the actor/orator/illusionist/philosopher/empathizer at the heart of the Hulu film “In & Of Itself,” the hugely popular one-act journey of the soul that attracted throngs of fans on both coasts, who embraced the live show’s deep exploration of existence and identity, which often resulted in unsuspecting audience members becoming a vital part of the action in a meaningful, emotional, narrative-building way.

On May 30, actor, writer and director Bo Burnham launched a surprise sneak attack on a category that’s already one of the most competitive at this year’s Emmy Awards. That day, Netflix dropped “Bo Burnham Inside,” a comedy and music special that dissected life during the pandemic, won rave reviews and seemingly became a major player in the Emmys’ Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) category.
In a year of shows that surveyed our troubled existence in the face of Covid, “Inside” might well be the Covid-iest of all. Written, shot and performed by Burnham over the course of a year from inside a single room, it’s a twisted musical-comedy meditation on isolation, social media and the sociopolitical currents of our time.
It pretends to be a soul-baring examination of Burnham’s mental turmoil during lockdown, but it also mocks all that soul-baring; it’s supposed to be a record...

“Derek DelGaudio’s ‘In & Of Itself'” is finally hitting the big screen. The Hulu special will run at the IFC Center in New York from May 28 to June 3, marking the first time audiences can see the film version of the stage show in an actual theater.
“In & Of Itself” was originally slated to premiere in person at SXSW last year. But then the pandemic hit, and although the film was indeed first seen in 2020 through SXSW, it was screened virtually. It won SXSW’s Adam Yauch Hörnblowér Award, before premiering on Hulu this past January.
The theatrical run is part of Hulu’s For Your Consideration campaign for “In & Of Itself,” which was directed by Frank Oz.
“This is the very thing we’ve wanted for a year and a month,” Oz said of finally being able to see “In & Of Itself” in a theater.

Derek DelGaudio’s In & Of Itself is hard to describe but much harder to shake. Part magic act, part memoir, part group meditation experience, the Hulu release is an adaptation of DelGaudio’s Off-Broadway show, which opened in 2016 and ran until 2018. Its creator and performer has worked as an illusionist and depicts his time as a dealer in illicit card games, is looking to pull off a more rarefied form of sleight of hand.
As he reflected during in an interview during Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted awards-season event, DelGaudio sees magic as “a tool I can use to make things.” He added, “I don’t allow this craft that I have learned to define my entire practice.”

If DelGaudio has anything to say about it, though, audiences won't be focused on trying to explain the tricks - they'll be taking in the performance as a whole.
Although he's not giving away his secrets anytime soon, DelGaudio does at least understand why audiences are so curious to "solve" the mysteries of how he pulls off his elaborate stunts. "It's natural. Experiencing a mystery is like being washed out away from shore, like having the tide pull you away. And the first thing you want to do is just swim back to shore as hard as you can. You want solid ground. You want to get back to the thing that you know and understand. And...

Derek DelGaudio would like to tell you the truth — an odd thing for an illusionist to say, much less in the beginning of a show. It’s the first clue that something seems unique here. That, and the 690 cards in the lobby, each of which start with the phrase “I am,” followed by professions (an ophthalmologist), jokes (a drama queen), or something more abstract (a nobody). A performer with a reputation for being a magician’s magician, the 35-year-old mounted an ambitious project titled In & Of Itself, which ran...

Derek DelGaudio’s ‘In & of Itself’ Review: A Magic Show That Transforms the Audience’s Sense of Self
Magic never works the same way in movies that it does in person, which is not to say that it doesn’t work in movies. It just takes a different kind of finesse, typically relying on editing and effects rather than the time-honored principles of misdirection and distraction. For those who weren’t fortunate enough to catch Derek DelGaudio’s solo show “In & of Itself” during its 20017-18 Off Broadway run — or at Los Angeles’ Geffen Playhouse, where it debuted a year before — director Frank Oz has fashioned a stand-alone film version for Hulu, and to DelGaudio’s credit, the essence of his act remains intact, sparking awe, introspection and tears of connection, even when watched alone.
Not all the tricks translate, nor do they need to, since DelGaudio has shrewdly constructed the experience around the theme of identity, revealing deeply personal elements of his own history in such...

Becoming a filmmaker is tough business. Yes, if you know anything about the film industry, it’s obvious that becoming a director that gets projects greenlit is the equivalent of winning the lottery. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try, as is seen in the new documentary “Clapboard Jungle.”

"You can see it for what it is... or you can imagine what it could be." Hulu has unveiled an official trailer for the acclaimed stage show doc film In & Of Itself, a taped presentation of Derek DelGaudio's famous show that first opened in NYC in 2016. DelGaudio's show is technically magic, and you could call him an illusionist, but he doesn't prefer these terms and he refuses to call In & Of Itself a magic show. Which is fine. It's a combination of storytelling and mystery and intrigue and magic all-in-one. This film premiered at a few film festivals last year, and launches on Hulu later this month. It is a taped version of the show, directed by Frank Oz, with a few clever editing tricks during audience interaction moments. And it is Astounding. This guy is the most innovative, creative magician working today and it's near impossible...

From Harry Houdini to David Blaine, magicians have never ceased to hold audiences enraptured, turn the impossible into possible and spark the pervading question: “How did they do that?” The latter—however—is not solely a part of spectator speculation after a performance. A magician like the late James Randi utilized his craft to demonstrate how charlatans such as Uri Geller, Peter Popoff, and James Hydrick successfully duped individuals into believing they possessed psychic powers.

Derek DelGaudio aims to subvert expectations in his one-man show “In & Of Itself.”
He’s an illusionist, after all.
Yet in an exclusive first trailer of the live recording of his acclaimed stage show, which debuts on Hulu this month, even the audience appears unprepared for the magic that unfolds before their very eyes.
“You think this is a performance,” DelGaudio narrates in the video. “You see a man in a theater… there’s an audience. It’s difficult to see past what this looks like.”
He offers, “You can see it for what it is — or you can imagine what it could be.”
“In & Of Itself” ran Off Broadway for over a year before getting the movie treatment. Frank Oz directed the filmed version, which was recorded live in New York City. Oz previously staged the show during its Off-Broadway run and at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles.

Though he’s adept enough at sleight-of-hand and other stage trickery to have earned the admiration of people like Ricky Jay, Penn & Teller and David Blaine, performer Derek DelGaudio bristles at the term “magician.” Anyone inclined to think that makes him pretentious can look to Derek DelGaudio’s In & Of Itself, in which Frank Oz documents the singular 2017 off-Broadway show (also directed by Oz) that embodies his ideal: Here, the patter employed by some ambitious illusionists becomes full-blown storytelling, with sequences built around a unifying theme and a carefully considered approach to stage and sound design....

Four years ago, Doc NYC was the first major film festival after the election. It was an appropriate time for the country’s largest showcasing of non-fiction cinema, much of which speaks to some of the most pressing issues of our time. That’s true again this year, but the mood is likely to be quite different, and so is the experience as a whole. Like most of the festival circuit this year, Doc NYC is going virtual, which means that people across America can stream all 108 features and 92 shorts over the course of eight packed days.
The lineup encompasses a wide range of subjects, from activism to police brutality and the role of creativity to parse an increasingly complex world. Here are 11 highlights. Browse the full lineup and purchase tickets here. Doc NYC runs November 11-19.

It’s a tough act for a critic to try and explain the joys and pleasures of Derek DelGaudio’s In & of Itself. In short, it’s an evocative exploration of narrative and identity through magic and trickery, starting with a thesis statement: we are all our own unreliable narrators. While this premise could also be a trigger warning at the beginning of Rashômon, Shutter Island, and a few Fincher films, In & of Itself takes a fascinating turn, steeped in the kind of narrative that’s required at the heart of every magic show. Objects are given meaning, including a gold brick that appears on stage and around the city of New York, symbolizing a brick thrown into the window of his childhood home after his mom came out.

When Derek DelGaudio’s 72-week, four-time-extended Off Broadway run of his accurately titled In & Of Itself vanishes August 19 from the 150-seat Daryl Roth Theatre, the one-man-show will have grossed $7 million, played 560 performances and stretched far past its planned 10-week engagement.
Hollywood visitors will have to find something else to do with their evenings.
Directed by Frank Oz and produced by, among others, Neil Patrick Harris, the remarkable, critically lauded show of illusions and drama will have mesmerized star-filled audiences impressive even by jaded New York standards. Jason Sudeikis has seen it five times. Tom Hanks has seen it, as has Daniel Radcliffe, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Mark Hamill, Common, Martin Short, Kevin Kline, Salman Rushdie, Paul Rudd, David Blaine (four times), George Rr Martin, Olivia Wilde, Liev Schreiber, Kate McKinnon, Taran Killam & Cobie Smulders,...
