Much underrated insight into the truth.

From the days when TV dramas had something to say, The Children of Dynmouth is both entertaining and highly thought provoking.

Timothy is an awkward adolescent who simply doesn't fit in his rather narrow English seaside town. He spends his days playing truant from school observing the local community through an old pair of binoculars. Accordingly he learns their hidden secrets and feels no shame in confronting them with his knowledge when seeking their assistance to put on a stage act for the local village talent competition. But the truth often hurts and his observations are not always accurate.

The ensuing drama presents an uncomfortable dilemma that questions not only the morality of British society but perhaps even the truth itself.

An unknown actor named Simon Fox plays Timothy with quite remarkable insight and his character certainly gained my sympathy despite his unbelievably gauche and questionable style. What a pity this young actor appears in no other listed productions especially as young George Magrath who plays alongside him as a local lad went on to much greater roles as an adult.

excellent drama

From the days when the BBC still produced great drama. Screenplay writer William Trevor began to write in the 1960s. The 1980s, like the 1960s, was a productive decade for worthwhile television. A very strange, disturbing story, and a striking performance by Simon Fox in the lead role as Timothy, always alone yet always cheerful on the surface. The rest of the cast support well, the other characters unable to communicate fully with him. The windy, small seaside town and the main characters have stayed in my memory since first viewing in 1987. Because it is haunting, I would like to say more, but the only useful advice is to recommend watching it!

Bizarre, very entertaining.

Timothy Hedge is a very troubled boy, he's not interested at school, he's not cared for by his mother, and he delights in tormenting the people of Dynmouth. His only aim is to make it as a comic, all he needs, a set of props for a local talent show.

The screen two series were often either good or very good, sometimes they were excellent, Children of Dynmouth is definitely one of the latter.

What a depressing little community that is, and nothing escapes the eagle eyed Timothy.

Simon Fox is great as Timothy, he's a little irritating to start, but as it develops, we see just how conniving and nasty he is, he has one clear aim, and has a very clear mindset of how to get what he wants. Is Timothy aware of the impact of his words? I think he knew fully what he was doing.

A very good cast, the likes of Avril Elgar, John Bird and Peter Jones, but it's the young Simon Fox who provides the entertainment.

8/10.
