What did I just watch
chrisy5556 October 2021
I always give these low budget movies a try, 20 minutes in I had to turn it off. Filmed in the UK, pretending to be in the USA. Terrible American accents and one American police car. Not to mention the awful acting, terrible sets etc etc.

I strongly believe if I had two mobile phones and a decent phone holder I could make a better movie.

Special effects are out of this world

I'm glad they made the rat look realistic and didn't just dress up some guy in a rat suit.

... but that ending though
sahlgoode6 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I was being entertained for the most part watching this even though it had plot holes you could drive a truck through. Yeah the rat was a guy in a furry suit, that was okay. A so called scientists that didn't even think of getting a rabies shot after being gored by a giant rat.... I could live with that. A police captain staring like a deer in caught in headlights as a hostess uses wine bottle, trays, and chairs to defend herself.....I guess that could happen.

What really got my goat was the terrible CGI at the end. I was all set to give this a higher rating, but could only give it a two, and only happened because I allowed myself to forgive the movies other obvious flaws.

Watch it at the end of a busy day, and hopefully you'll nod off before the ending.

Wow, utter dross.
Macca505 October 2021
I just can't believe they still make movies this bad. Everything about it is laughably bad, the acting, the sets and particularly the 'creature'. Ignore the 10/10 ratings that are obviously posted by those involved with this woeful effort of a movie. You have been warned, watch at your peril.

Horror that isn't
simoncoram-067667 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The mutation itself, supposedly a rat, resembles a teddy bear 🐻. As such it's as scary as cheese. I really cannot see the point of making this film, it was throwing money down the bog.

Rats
BandSAboutMovies6 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
After a deadly experiment on a rat goes wrong - alright, that's all you had to tell me.

I'm in.

The mutated rat has been let loose in a city and a group of detectives, a zoologist and a grieving widow must join forces to exterminate that rat which is growing larger and larger.

Again, all in.

Scott Jeffrey is producing, directing and just plain churning out movies from the UK and this one, well, one look at the goofy rat in the trailer made me love whatever this ended up being. This movie should serve as a lesson to research scientists everywhere: if you inject a rat with anabolic steroids and uranium isotopes, it will become a killing machine. You will get people killed. You may possibly be killed by said gigantic rat.

A mix of dude in costume and CGI along with practical effects for the gore makes this look way better than I expected. It's not a blockbuster-looking movie, but it's pretty much exactly what it needs to be: a creature feature that can equally make you laugh and gross you out.

Also, between this, Deadly Eyes and Rats: The Night of Terror, I realize that there may be an entire rat genre.

Erm???
jcallender1216 October 2021
I'm lost for words, I settled in for what I thought was a by the book Crap Creature film, instead I sat with glazed eyes not knowing whether to laugh, cry or stab myself to death with a tomato!. Nothing makes any sense at all, no-one does anything remotely plausible, the Police make Chief Wiggum look like Columbo and the creature(which is passable, even though it's never explained why it has arms and legs), goes through the whole film trying to be a werewolf, then suddenly grows to the size of a house at the end,,,,then explodes!!, sorry what!!. I feel bad marking it so low because someone has really tried in some areas, but the direction given to the cast and the tsunami of diarrhoea that comes out of their mouths is by far the most horrific part of the whole film. All in all a missed opportunity.

Not the finest moment of horror cinema...
paul_haakonsen8 October 2021
Granted, when I sat down to watch the 2021 horror movie titled "The Mutation" from writer and director Scott Jeffrey, I must admit that the movie had that particular traditional and classic 1980s horror feel to it. And that was the biggest reason for me sitting down to watch it, well, that and the fact that it was a horror movie that I hadn't already seen.

Well, sadly, the movie's cover was actually the best thing about the ordeal that is "The Mutation". I kid you not.

Yeah, the storyline here is pretty straight forward, so at least Scott Jeffrey did manage to pull that off. But at the same time, the storyline was so predictable and generic that the movie quickly ran out of fuel and became a drag to sit through. So you are not finding yourself in for a rollercoaster of a horror movie if you opt to sit down to watch "The Mutation".

The acting in the movie was fair enough. Sure, you are not sitting down to watch a grand thespian performance of Shakespearian level. But on the other hand, there are far worse B-movie performances in the horror genre. So the actors and actresses that took a part in "The Mutation" did the best with the material at hand, or so I would like to think.

Visually then "The Mutation" was somewhat of a swing and a miss. Sure, the creature concept was interesting enough, and the suit actually did look quite alright. But it was just that; a suit. And it was painstakingly obvious exactly just that; a man in a creature suit. Especially the non-articulate face, that was a buzz-killer.

I am sure that there is an audience out there for a low budget horror movie such as "The Mutation", I just wasn't particularly much a member of that audience.

My rating of "The Mutation" lands on a generous three out of ten stars.

Watch out for the killer mutant rat man!
Woodyanders15 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A ferocious mutated humanoid rat-man beast (Derek Nelson in a funky hairy suit) goes on a murderous spree in the wake of escaping from a lab.

Writer/director Scott Jeffrey relates the enjoyably inane and absurd story at a brisk pace, treats the gloriously ludicrous premise with jaw-dropping seriousness, stages the attack scenes with grisly gusto, and delivers a generous serving of bloody gore.

Moreover, the game no-name cast play it admirably straight: Ricardo Freitas as eager zoologist Allen Marsh, Amanda-Jade Tyler as grieving widow Dr. Linda Rowe, Abi Casson Thompson as the sweet Julie Smith, Jamie Robertson as hard-nosed copper Norton, and Andrew Rolfe as the jittery Sergeant McKenna. Among the definite campy highlights are a wild restaurant massacre sequence and a simply hysterical climax with an obvious CGI giant rodent running amuck. A total schlocky hoot.

Not a total waste of time
jdeckard6210 October 2023
You're watching something called Mutation. Did you expect great cinema? I expected a bad monster movie and that's exactly what I got. It can be hard for me to find monster movies I haven't seen before, so I was pretty excited to find this. The camera work was mediocre but the acting was decent and the mutated rat monster costume was hysterical. If you've got a day off of work and want to spend it watching silly monster movies, which is what I was planning on doing, I would recommend putting this on your list. I've definitely managed to sit through worse. Bottom line: I got what I expected, since I wasn't expecting too much.

Embarrassing!

I sometimes wonder who in their right mind are tossing out high ratings!? It can only be family and friends of the artists and the production team.

Please save your time. This movie is so bad it's not even worse going into detail.

The Rat who became a Werewolf... Then a (giant) Rat again.
ntj-film7 October 2021
We all know uncork'd' feature output is more or less synonymous with VOD stinkers, but I have seldom seen one as charming, in spite of its utter ineptitude, than The Mutation.

A research scientist has altered a lab rats genom (don't do it kids!) creating what can only be discribed as a poor man's lycanthrope, who, perhaps understandingly, starts gnawing on anything with a pulse.

For some reason the people responsible for this trainwreck chose to set this "story" in America but very obviously shot it in the UK. Something you'll no doubt noticed when hearing the dilettante that act as stand in for actual actors, trying (and failing spectacularly) to read their lines. Seriously, it sounds like they've been equipped with gagballs, so much so that some can't even pronounce their own characters names.

So the film is objectively speaking pure garbage but there is a certain fuzzy (pun intended) warm likable quality to the incompetence on display.

Plus the Wererat or ratwolf if you will, is pretty fun.

With a few friends and a lot of beer, I could see this being a winner, for all the wrong reasons.

If Negative Stars were possible........
reellycynical6 October 2021
........... this movie would get them.

Horrible.

I could have made a better movie with an empty warehouse, a cell phone and some cheap costumes I could pick up at any Costume/Movie Shop.

Run for your life.

You only know what people let you see
nogodnomasters15 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A giant mutant rat kills Peter Lowe (Nick Danan), its keeper, and escapes to the country side to kill again. The police investigate and call in zoologist Alan Marsh (Ricardo Freitas) to help. He gets close to the widow Linda Rowe (Amanda-Jade Tyler) who pronounces her name as "Linder" and "McKenna" as McKenner.

The mutant rat is a man in a rat costume, something that could pass for a Yeti or werewolf in a 1960''s film. I kept waiting for a clever line, but it never happened. I was wondering if they meant to say that the "FBI" was called in. It is a the British film.

Guide: f-word. No sex or nudity.

Yea yea, I know. Based on the poster I knew what I was getting into, but I was actually hoping for a cheesier creature feature. But what I got was just a slow, boring but ok acted movie.

Restaurant scene
amymay-6991621 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Had to be the worst, most ill-thought out, terrible scene in the history of b movies. A restaurant FULL of patrons QUIETLY watches giant five nights at Freddy's reject kill two waitresses --and WAIT THEIR TURN TO BE KILLED!! One of our lead detectives is there,at his anniversary dinner--with his gun in a locked briefcase, which he fumbles to retrieve while his wife angrily screams at him about bringing a gun on their anniversary rat massacre dinner. Freaking garbage. Best character goes to kick ass waitress number two,who probably had the best fight scene of the whole movie. She was not going down without a tussle!!!

Giant Rat On The Loose
ladymidath5 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Look, I honestly don't know if this is a good movie on the verge of being bad, or a bad movie on the verge of being good.

The acting was so serious and the actors all so straight faced, but the story is ludicrous.

A very obvious actor in a rat suit is clumsily killing people and the police are on the case along with a zoologist. This should make for a fun movie with over the top action and lots of gore. Instead we get a serious tone that seems to dull everything down.

The scene in the restaurant was so stilted with everyone sitting and staring as a waitress was killed. Wouldn't the patron jump up and start screaming and running for the exit? I sure would be.

The acting and music were fine bit the movie was so muted and took itself so seriously that it drained any fun it could have.

It is a shame because while I did not hate it, it could have been better than it was.

Bwah ha ha!!! Giant killer rat...
cdkeivit20 December 2023
OK where to start...there are enough reviews on the plot (or lack thereof), so I'll talk about the production. This movie is supposed to be set in the US but the main cars are right hand drive - except for the regular looking US-style police car.

I'm an American living in the UK and it bothers the HELL out of me when locals add an r to the end of words - idear, tortillar, etc. One of the cops has a Scottish accent, and one is named McKenna but is of course pronounced "McKenner". They called an apartment a "flat", and a visible phone number is obviously a UK-based landline!! And the "attempts" at American accents are absolutely atrocious! You will laugh your ass off at the restaurant scene - just wow...

I love B horror movies but I've seen better high school AV projects.

Took itself too seriously
icocleric7 December 2023
When I saw the creature looking like a guy in a fur suit, for a "mutated rat". I thought I was in. Because I love bad horror is amazing when it's not too serious, and it's entertaining. Especially if it is a creature feature.

Like it's more "realistic" than a cartoon mouse, but it's strangely adorable, and if they were offering free hugs at a con. You would accept. This wouldn't have been a deal breaker for the film.

The dull scenes when the rat isn't on screen, however are. It feeling like it's switching between a serious film with flat acting, and a fury living his best life. Yeah, it's a bit of a whiplash. Like this could have been glorious if they film makers would have realised it was terrible, and just had fun with it.

Especially with the ending the picked. You don't go dull and serious if you pick that ending.
