The two Amazon original films this month are of the family friendly variety. The Tender Bar, based on a memoir of the same name and directed by George Clooney, premieres on Jan. 7. This is followed on Jan. 14 by Hotel Transylvania: Transformania. This is the fourth installment in the animated Hotel Transylvania series, hammering home the fact that if you bring Adam Sandler and Genndy Tartakovsky aboard you project, things are gonna go pretty smoothly.

Donald Glover was recently a guest on Ellen and opened up for the first time about landing the coveted role of Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars film.
Fans seemed to be incredibly happy about the casting decision, and I have no doubt that he's going to be absolutely awesome in the role. During the interview, he revealed that he's always been a huge Star Wars fan and that his very first toy as a kid was a Lando action figure. He also said his mom told him not to mess it up.
"I told my dad immediately. My mom was in the back, she was like, ‘Don’t mess it up.’ She was like, ‘Don’t mess this up!’ Cause Billy Dee [Williams] is like—that’s hers."

We've been on the Donald Glover/Childish Gambino hype train for a long time at GeekTyrant. I interviewed Glover and the rest of Derrick Comedy for their movie Mystery Team back in the day, and we've been listening to Gambino's albums here since his pre-Camp mixtapes. It's been awesome to see him emerge on the hip-hop scene and make an impact, and to watch him evolve as an artist and get his own FX TV series, Atlanta (which is great, by the way, and you all should watch it).
YouTuber KaptainKristian has put together a short video detailing how Glover represents a new kind of multi-hyphenate entertainer, and for those of you who only know Gambino through his music or Glover through his stand-up, this quick history should help paint a larger picture of his ambitions as a storyteller.

The first episode of Donald Glover's FX series Atlanta is officially on YouTube, and it looks pretty damn good! I didn't get a chance to watch it last night, but I just watched the first couple minutes and I'm hooked! Of course, I'm a fan of most of Glover's work as Childish Gambino and his writing on Mystery Team and 30 Rock. It seems weird to bring those up because they really are not at all similar to what you are about to watch, but trust me, it's good.
For those who watched the episode, what are your thoughts?...

Most people may only know Donald Glover from Community, but he seems to be trying his hand at just about everything, and I don’t think he’s had to weather a lot of criticism yet. Well, Mystery Team wasn’t that great.
But, even if you get a feel for his acting, writing, composing, and soundtrack credits, you’re probably expecting anything with his name on it to lean toward the humorous. Atlanta bills itself as a comedy, and there’s a sense in which it is funny, hilarious even, but it’s a comedy of subtlety, and you’re going to want to leave your assumptions about the Community star and respected comedy writer at the door here.
The show is about two cousins who suddenly find themselves with a chance to break onto the Atlanta rap scene in a big enough way that they have to stop and actually pay attention.

Things certainly seem to be on the rise for Donald Glover, an actor and writer who had his start in online sketch comedy before hopping into features with the Derrick Comedy features Mystery Team. Around the same time, Glover began to establish himself in the TV world as a writer/actor on 30 Rock before moving into the show that brought him his greatest mainstream recognition: Community.
Interestingly enough, Donald Glover is also notable to Spider-Man fans, as he was one of the inspirations for Miles Morales, the half black, half hispanic Marvel character who takes on the mantle of Spider-Man after the death of Peter Parker. There’s something inherently strange about the kiddie detective genre, since the lives of shamuses tend to revolve around subject matter that is inappropriate for young people. Detectives deal with grown-up bummers like kidnapping, death, murder, threats, and various other non-g-rated subjects. The cult comedy Mystery Team and the Comedy Bang Bang podcast duo The Kid Detectives each mine the gulf between the sunny childhood innocence of the Encyclopedia Brown school of prepubescent mystery and the violent world of real-life crime (and crime-fighters) for big, dark laughs.
The perplexingly light mystery Ace The Case, on the other hand, plays the kiddie detective genre straight and ends up a weird anomaly. The film is too violent and dark for kids but too juvenile and bland for grown-ups. The unexpected violence begins with the father of protagonist Olivia Haden (Ripley Sobo) being murdered. The idea is to raise the stakes, but Ace...

If animated TV series “Mike Tyson Mysteries” is “Scooby-Doo” on acid, then the second season was even wackier, with an abundance of fun celebrities and bizarre creatures to design.
This season, character designer Dusty Abell’s task of trying to “simplify real people that we are all familiar with” was combined with a “wider variety of characters. It’s a surprising balance of crass and smart in dealing with pop culture and political satire.”
Abell already had his hands full with the Mystery team: the eponymous Mike Tyson, profane and oblivious (voiced by the former boxer); the alcoholic and obnoxious Pigeon (Norm Macdonald); Tyson’s 18-year-old adopted daughter, Yung Hee Tyson (Rachel Ramras), who resembles “Scooby-Doo’s” Velma; and the haughty ghost of Marquess of Queensberry, the father of modern boxing (Jim Rash).
For Tyson, Abell took inspiration from the Muhammad Ali and Mr. T cartoons of the ’70s and ’80s, and was pleasantly surprised by Tyson’s voice acting ability. Of course, Tyson’s boxing prowess came in handy when interacting with his intellectual sidekick, John Douglas, 9th Marquess of Queensberry.
“He was telling me all about the rules of the old sport and how it evolved over time,” said Abell. “And he was very knowledgeable about the real man and what he brought to the fight game. And Jim Rash had once written a blog about programming 24 hours of Saturday morning cartoons. His take on ’70s and ’80s conventions was fascinating.”
For the episode “Ogopogo!,” which tells Pigeon’s backstory of being human and having a spell put on him by his ex-wife, the eponymous sea monster proved a fun design challenge. “The show called for a haunted lake and a river monster,” Abell said. “And I had no idea they were drawing from legend and lore, so I watched a whole documentary about the Ogopogo monster. It’s the Lake Michigan version of the Loch Ness monster.”
The episode in which Snoop Dogg starts a rival Mystery team (“Unsolved Situations”) provided a different challenge for Abell: “His hair was originally done in little pixie twirls, but the Dogg team had one request: that he look as he does now with tight braids.”

What's great about the internet these days is we're seeing so many talented artists find success through the process of sharing. It's not just the lone Hollywood executive or low-level script reader who makes decisions now -- instead it's all of us. The power has shifted, and if something gains enough traction in social media, then you bet Hollywood will pay attention. We've seen it work with everything from the upcoming Deadpool movie to Grumpy Cat, and now the folks behind Derrick Comedy, Mystery Team and more are taking their latest project to the web in the hopes it'll get the nerd juices flowing enough to snag Hollywood's attention. Remember that funny bearded Apple store employee from Captain America: The Winter Soldier? You probably...

"Well, then I guess we have no choice than to go on an adventure..." Now this is awesome! Comedian/actor DC Pierson wrote a book called The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To, which director Dan Eckman (of Derrick Comedy's Mystery Team) is trying to get turned into a movie, but it needs our support. So he made a quick 5-minute short film proof-of-concept to show how awesome this would be, and it's pretty cool. Tony Revolori of The Grand Budapest Hotel and Dope stars with Jack Quaid of The Hunger Games. They use a line about how this is like a 3D printer for anything from the comic book, which is a cool pitch, and it works well. I really do want to see more, though hopefully as a movie not a TV show. Thanks to SlashFilm for the tip. Fire this up right away and enjoy,...

In D.C.Pierson‘s “The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To,” there’s a boy who can’t sleep and never has to. He’s a freak. A weirdo. That Radiohead song is probably about him, and because he’s got a special power, people in nondescript suits are hunting him down. Pierson is a part of Derrick Comedy alongside Dominic Dierkes and the guy everyone wants to play the new Spider-Man, although it’s been a few years since they’ve put anything out together. Their last big project was the movie Mystery Team in 2010, and while making The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To was announced as a follow-up of sorts, nothing ever came of it, and Pierson got a job at the Apple store in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Now, Mystery Team director Dan Eckman and its producer Meggie McFadden have created a short film with...

Adult Swim's 2014-2015 slate will feature several new (and returning) TV series, including "Mike Tyson Mysteries," a half-hour animated adult comedy series featuring a cartoon version of Mike Tyson, who solves mysteries, aided by the Mike Tyson Mystery Team, which is made up of the Ghost of the Marquess of Queensbury, Mike’s adopted Korean daughter, and a pigeon who was once a man. This great series of art incorporates a few other horror icons that the Scooby-Doo Mystery Team would have had a lot of fun taking on. The art series is called Scooby Doo Lost Mysteries, and they were created by IBTrav. They feature Ghost Face, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Myers. Similar to Scooby Doo and the original Batman Tas, Mike Tyson Mysteries seems to want to recapture the feel of those shows with a twist. The show's animation is definetely reminiscient of 60s-70s animation as the likes of Super Friends or Johnny Quest. Another interesting tidbit about thing is that Mike Tyson will actually be voicing the main character in the show, Mike Tyson. Originally appearing at Sdcc '14, Mike Tyson Mysteries' trailer premiered to a packed crowd. And a day later the trailer was released on YouTube with a region lock. However, just recently it seems that the region lock has lifted on most areas and is available to all! In Mike Tyson Mysteries, a new half-hour animated adult comedy series, Mike Tyson is taking the fight from the boxing ring to the streets ... by solving mysteries! Brandy Klark (Plaza) is an intellectually successful but socially inept student at an Idaho high school in 1993. This differentiates her starkly from her popular sister Amber (Bilson), who mocks Brandy for still being a virgin. Brandy protests that she almost slept with an older guy named Rusty (Scott Porter) once, but quickly realises that she will have to obtain greater experience soon or face further ridicule. She duly sets out to seduce Rusty by taking a job as a lifeguard at the pool where he works but faces several obstacles along the way. Can her fellow socially awkward friend Cameron (Simmons) help her out?

What other hidden gems can we discover early in the first Sundance 2014 announcement? How about a comedy where Aubrey Plaza (of Mystery Team, Funny People, Safety Not Guaranteed, "Parks & Rec") plays Dane DeHaan's girlfriend Beth, who he keeps as his girlfriend after she becomes a zombie. It's titled Life After Beth (nice) and does indeed star Plaza as a zombie. The ensemble cast includes more excellent names like John C. Reilly, Paul Reiser, Anna Kendrick, Alia Shawkat and Molly Shannon. Hopefully not too similar to Warm Bodies, this does sound interesting, we'll catch it at Sundance in January. First look below. For that matter, which of the Internet’s zillions of entertainment options should you turn to throughout the rest of the weekend?

As someone who grew up anticipating each new Encyclopedia Brown that Donald J. Sobol published, I couldn.t be more jazzed with Warner Bros.. recent interest in reinvigorating a feature version of the child detective book series. I.m well aware of its potential for failure, but sometimes optimism is key with cherished properties. It.s something of a mystery in itself that Warner has chosen Matthew Johnson, the director and star of the recent drama The Dirties, to write a draft of the script, according Deadline. It isn.t quite like asking Takashi Miike to make a Winnie the Pooh movie, but there.s an equal amount of bizarreness to the decision. It seems like he.d be more in line for a Mystery Team-like film over something geared towards kids. For those unaware, The Dirties is a darkly comedic and bothersome look at how high school bullying...

Ghost Team One is kind of like if the folks from Mystery Team made a found footage horror comedy. Two stoners attempt to make contact with the dead in hopes of hooking up with a girl who believes that their house is haunted.
With so many found footage films falling flat, it’s refreshing to see a different take on the subgenre that doesn’t take itself too seriously. One thing that’s promising is the fact that the laughs start right away instead of most found footage horror movies where nothing happens ever until the final reel. The directing team of Ben Peyser and Scott Rutherford talked to Dread Central the other day from the oldest building in Los Angeles, the Avila Adobe building.
DC: Are you guys actually doing a press day at the Avila Adobe house right now? Any weird shit going on?
Ben Pyser: Yes we are.

"It's time we stop impersonating heroes, and we start to kick some mother f*!&ing ass!" How about a funny superhero parody to kick off the week? The first trailer has debuted for Joshua Hull's new film The Impersonators, an independent "comedy/action superhero movie" about a group of rag tag birthday party super hero impersonators who get in over their heads. To use the typical cliche of comparison, this film feels a lot like Super meets Mystery Team, two of my favorite cult indies. It may be ultra low budget but it still has some genuinely funny moments and I like how crazy things get in the final seconds of this trailer. Enjoy. Here's the first official trailer for Joshua Hull's The Impersonators, originally posted by AICN: A group of rag tag birthday party superhero impersonators are hired by a crime-ridden town to clean up their streets.

By “I’ve found,” I should point out that I was made aware of the film by a hometown acquaintance with a minor onscreen role, via his Facebook page. It’s a small connection that has even less bearing on my decision to showcase the project than the fact that Freaks and Geeks actor Samm Levine co-stars (he is the one cast member of that show who really needs to be in more stuff), but I like to offer full disclosure.
