Ah, to be young and teenaged. Carefree and curious of the world around you, and unfortunately, stern, over-protective parents hounding you at every wake. This is Miss Judy Jetson's plight in today's show. It opens on Judy having a sophisticated conversation with her girlfriend, involving the new school hunk with whom she has a date, and his stunning new space car, in which they would be taking that date. Angered over his daughter's persistent phone usage, George activates "daughter control" which subdues Judy by grabbing her and carrying her away from the phone, freeing it up. How much would you pay? Well a member from the Chamber of Cosmic Commerce calls, George, thinking he was calling for Judy, tells him off, only to realize he was calling for Jane. Apparently she has been selected as a finalist in the Outstanding Woman of the Year Award. There was only one other finalist, and as luck would have it, it's Mrs. Spacely; Well when Judy returns home late from her date, George overreacts as only he can, but after sleeping on it, he decides that he has been a bit over protective and a pushy parent. He offers her a chance to get away from home for a few weeks, which Judy jumps at, until George shows her the vacation buddy he had planned: Cousin Melissa. A judgmental Judy puts down the idea because of Melissa's looks... not exactly a Raquel Welchstar yourself, Judy; meanwhile at Spacely Sprocketts, the sprocket guru is determined to have his wife win the award and make Jane look the fool. He decides to accomplish this by enlisting the aid of Private Eye Lenny Laser. That's right, the ol' spying game; When Judy discovers Cousin Melissa has been given a total '80s retro make-over, she changes her mind about flying with her, but now a overly judgmental George tries to talk Judy out of it... I guess "don't judge a book by it's cover" is no longer practiced in the future. But ignoring the stupidly vain protests of her father, Judy takes off (hence our title).
She's taken to meet Cousin Melissa's gang, the Crabby Nebulas (I hope they're called 'crabby' because they're grumpy and not...well, you know). Judy is given the nickname "Snooty Judy" and is taken for a space-cycle ride against her will. George had decided to follow along incognito, and Lenny Laser spies on Judy, using this to discredit Jane. Well as it turns out, the fast-paced biker life isn't to Judy's liking and she confides in Space Ace (George, incognito), given that nickname because he clumsily out rides the other bikers. So, oblivious to the fact he's her father, because it is him just with a helmet on, Judy expresses her dislike of life here, as well as life back home. Unfortunately, the muscle heads barge in to challenge George to a race at the demolition Destructo Derby. Like a fool, he accepts. Hey, Judy's life depended on it and she's too weak to fight for herself. So the derby is on, and George "Space Ace" Jetson is hammered by all three of his competitors, while Lenny Laser films. But despite the rampant destruction and bruised body, George wins the derby. The tape is played for the Chamber of Cosmic Commerce's consideration and Jane is certain she'll lose, which Mr. and Mrs. Spacely rub in her face, but surprise, surprise, Jane wins the award! After all, anybody who can keep a family like this together deserves it!
So, that's "Judy Takes Off". Actually it's a pretty nice Judy-centered episode, and it shows she isn't as bad as she likes to think she is. There isn't much plot to this episode, however, and what story there is comes off as standard, but it's a good episode. A fun one too. In the end, everybody in this episode got what they deserved, which always makes for a satisfying end. Check it out!
