Samantha Weinstein, a Canadian actor who appeared in the 2013 remake of Stephen King’s Carrie starring Chloë Grace Moretz, died May 14 at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto after being diagnosed in 2021 with a rare form of ovarian cancer. She was 28.
Her death was announced on her Instagram page by her family. “After two and a half years of cancer treatment, and a lifetime of jet setting around the world, voicing a plethora of cartoon animals, making music, and knowing more about life than most people ever will, she is off on her next adventure,” her family wrote.
Launching her show business career as a child actor in 2003 with a role on an episode of the Canadian TV series The Red Green Show, Weinstein would go on to appear in such series as The Winning Season (2004), Wild Card (2005), The Border (2008), Less Than Kind and Burden of Truth (2020), among others. "How is the team looking?" Ld Entertainment has debuted a trailer for a true story film titled The Miracle Season, about a high school girls' volleyball team that had to overcome a tragic loss of one of their players. The cast of the film is lead by Helen Hunt, William Hurt, Danika Yarosh, Erin Moriarty, as well as Tiera Skovbye and Nesta Cooper. The Miracle Season is based on the inspiring true story of West High School girls' volleyball team. In 2011, their star player Caroline Found tragically died in a moped accident, but the team (and the entire town) came together and overcame the odds. The story was already profiled on HBO's "Real Sports" series, but this is the feature film version. The title reminds me of The Winning Season, but this is probably closer to We Are Marshall than anything else. Another inspiring sports story to enjoy. Here's the...

"You really have to drive your own train and you have to keep it running." Yes indeed. Meet Jim Strouse. Also known as James C. Strouse. Jim is a filmmaker originally from Indiana, who now lives in New York City. If you don't recognize his name, hopefully you will recognize his films - Grace Is Gone (in 2007), The Winning Season (in 2009), People Places Things (in 2015), and now this year he has brought us The Incredible Jessica James. Jessica James stars the talented Jessica Williams as Jessica James in an optimistic, engaging story of a struggling playwright in New York. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, like every film Jim has made, and is being released by Netflix - it's available to watch now. I caught up with Jim at the Sundance Film Festival this year for a chat, and I'm happy to finally present our interview in full.

"Jessica - I really like you." "Of course you do! Everybody does. I'm friggin dope!" Netflix has debuted the full-length trailer for The Incredible Jessica James, the latest film from talented indie filmmaker Jim Strouse (of Grace Is Gone, The Winning Season, People Places Things - all three are great films). This upbeat indie comedy stars Jessica Williams from "The Daily Show" in a major breakout role as Jessica James, an aspiring playwright living in New York City struggling with the dating scene and the career scene. She meets a goofball guy that she slowly starts to fall for, played by Chris O'Dowd. Also starring Lakeith Stanfield, Noël Wells, Megan Ketch, and Zabryna Guevara. I saw this film at its Sundance premiere and it's wonderful, not only a fantastic performance from Jessica Williams, but an optimistic, light-hearted, enjoyable film to put you in a good mood. Just see it. Swipe Right To Meet.

It’s the “A Ghost Story” scene critics can’t stop talking about. Still grieving from the loss of her husband, the widow M returns home and consumes an entire vegan chocolate pie in one sitting. David Lowery captures the moment in a nearly four-minute long take, but the stillness of the camera makes it feel like an eternity. It’s up to Rooney Mara to fill the frame with a sense of hopelessness that anyone who’s been through the grieving process can relate to. She does so with the commitment and the sensitive gusto that has defined a majority of her 12 years as an actress.

After working with Jessica Williams in his 2015 film People, Place, Things, writer/director Jim Strouse (of Grace is Gone, The Winning Season) recruited her for a lead role and wrote an entire film around her. The Incredible Jessica James stars Jessica Williams as a struggling playwright living in New York City, dealing with a break up. Strouse makes light, amusing, charming films that have fun stories based on real situations. The Incredible Jessica James is no exception, and might just be Jim's best film to date. It's full of so much life and passion and love and, most importantly, optimism. In these troubling, tumultuous times, where depression and frustration are all too prevalent, a little bit of refreshing optimism goes a long way. Later this week, Lrm will be attending this year’s Sundance Film Festival. While the festival tends to be a mixed bag of indie films, some will be picked up for distribution by studios and turned into mainstream hits, others will flounder and be lucky to get a VOD release. Even so, there’s no denying that Sundance is the real beginning of the year for most movie lovers as we’ll be talking about the movies below for the next 12 months.
Last year alone, Sundance held the premieres for The Birth of a Nation, Manchester by the Sea, Captain Fantastic, Love and Friendship, The Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Sing Street and many more films, some that appeared on The Weekend Warrior’s year-end Top 25. One or two of those might even receive Oscar nominations when they’re announced next week on January 24.

Chicago – Any story involving family interactions is ripe for exploration, and John Krasinski (“The Office”) performs in and takes the director’s chair for the new film, “The Hollars.” This is his second directorial effort, looking at the somewhat dysfunctional title family during a medical crisis involving the mother (Margo Martindale).
John Krasinski is a well known affable guy, mostly for his role as Jim Halpert in the long-running sitcom “The Office.” He was born near Boston, and graduated from Brown University. He’s had a notable film career as well, with supporting roles in “License to Wed” (2007), “Leatherheads” (2008), “Away We Go” (2009), “Something Borrowed” (2011) and “Aloha” (2015). He broke his character mold this year in the Benghazi-inspired “13 Hours,” and now stars in and directs his second feature film, coming after “Brief Interviews with Hideous Men” (2009). He also became part of an official Hollywood “It” couple, with his marriage to actress Emily Blunt...

Perhaps the stars will for this highly anticipated directorial debut from an already established talent. First-time director Benedict Andrews is award-winning Australian theatre director who works out of Iceland and London, and judging from his body of work likely made the comfortable leap to this new set of damaged characters with Una – (formerly Blackbird) a screenplay by playwright David Harrower. Editor’s note: Our review of People, Places, Things originally ran during this year’s Sundance, but we’re re-posting it now as the film is currently available in limited theatrical release and on VOD. Director Jim Strouse is excellent at conveying the emotional range of the adult male experience. It’s not something you might hear a lot, especially in the context of it being refreshing, mostly because just about every movie is delivered from the male perspective. But there’s something a little more special, insightful and tender about Strouse’s work. This began with the pain explored in the John Cusack-led Grace is Gone, continued with the failure management of the Sam Rockwell-led The Winning Season and has come to fruition once again in the fatherhood dramedy People, Places, Things starring Jemaine Clement. Strouse has mastered the art of pairing the right leading man with the perfect emotional story. But...

The Film Arcade has debuted the full trailer for Jim Strouse's People, Places, Things, starring Jemaine Clement as a graphic novel artist/teacher struggling with his life as a single father. Jim Strouse is the very talented filmmaker who brought us Grace is Gone and The Winning Season, two other Sundance gems from a few years back (if you haven't seen either yet, please go watch both of them right away). This new film also stars Regina Hall, Jessica Williams and Stephanie Allynne. I saw this at Sundance and it's really, really good. Nothing groundbreaking, but just a feel good charmer that will leave you with a smile and some optimism. This is a lovely trailer for a movie I hope doesn't get ignored. Here's the first official trailer for Jim Strouse's People, Places, Things, in high def from Apple: Will Henry (Jemaine Clement...

Typically commercials make me mad, but the DirecTV commercials featuring model Hannah Davis and Jemaine Clement as a talking horse I actually enjoy and not because of Davis, though I'm not complaining about her involvement, but because of Clement as the horse. I will admit, however, I didn't actually remember they were DirecTV commercials (I thought they were for Geico), so as much as I find them funny I guess they aren't really all that effective. Go figure. I only mention this because as funny as I find Clement, I haven't actually seen a lot of his work. I'm not at all familiar with "Flight of the Conchords", never saw Eagle vs. Shark and, well, other than Men in Black 3 and hearing his voice as one of the Despicable Me minions (though I only learned that today from IMDb), I guess I've only caught him in passing and in YouTube videos.

Some good news for a great film out of the Sundance Film Festival. Director Jim Strouse, who last played Sundance with the films The Winning Season and Grace Is Gone, returned this year with a film called People, Places, Things starring Jemaine Clement as a graphic artist/illustrator. The charming film was quite enjoyable, I would actually recommend it and I hope people get a chance to see it, a very amusing little romantic comedy. Deadline is reporting that up-and-coming distributor The Film Arcade has picked up People, Places, Things for a Us release, sometime this summer. The indie distributor is also releasing Sundance faves A.C.O.D., Song One, The Voices, They Came Together and Dinosaur 13. So keep an eye out. People, Places, Things stars Jemaine Clement along with Stephanie Allynne, Regina Hall, Jessica Williams, Derrick Arthur and Celia Au. I saw the film at Sundance and enjoyed it quite a bit,...

Ladies and gentlemen, the Sundance award for “Not hating any of the characters in a film” goes to People, Places, Things! Ok, so there wasn't an award for that, but it certainly was refreshing to walk out of a movie at Sundance with absolutely no feelings of depression or hate. People, Places, Things has a superb balance of witty humor and drama. Director Jim Strouse (Grace is Gone, The Winning Season) confidently announced before the film was premiered at Sundance, “This film is the best type of film I can make.” I thought, “That was a pretty bold thing to say,” but when the credits ran at the end of the film, I couldn't disagree.
The film starts out at an awkward birthday party for Will (Jemaine Clement) and Charlie’s (Stephanie Allyne) twin daughters. It quickly becomes even more awkward when Will finds his wife Charlie sleeping with the off-Broadway monologist,...

Writer-director James C. Strouse's first two films, "The Winning Season" and the John Cusack vehicle "Grace Is Gone" both explore fatherhood, but Strouse never seemed to find a way make his dramatic interests succeed in a narrative form. Now going as Jim Strouse, has finally discovered his groove with his latest project, "People, Places, Things." Anchored by a stellar cast and a hilarious script, Strouse balances dramatic elements with quick-witted comedy. The heart of the film is the performance of Jermaine Clement ("Flight of The Concords") as Will Henry, a depressed graphic novelist and single father trying to put his life back together after catching his wife cheating on him with Gary (Michael Chernus), a monologist, on his twin daughter's birthday. A year later, Will is living a small Queens apartment, expressing his anguish through his drawings. His ex-wife Charlie (Stephanie Allayne) is pregnant getting married to Gary. His.

The Sundance Film Institute announced the U.S. dramatic, world dramatic, U.S. documentary, world documentary and Next selections for the 2015 Sundance Film Festival today. The premier film festival in the United States, Sundance is coming off a banner 2014 edition that brought films earning year-end kudos such as "Whiplash," "Boyhood," "Dear White People," "Obvious Child" and "The Skeleton Twins" into the world. The 2015 slate just looks just as intriguing and, according to the festival, perhaps more emotional and challenging. In a statement from the Institute, the festival's director, John Cooper, remarked, "The selections for our 2015 Festival will take audiences on a wild ride of emotional extremes. With approaches ranging from comedic to dramatic, genre to documentary, experimental to short, independent filmmakers are bravely illuminating new opportunities for understanding and empathy.” Festival founder and cinema icon Robert Redford added, "The work of independent artists inevitably reflects the state of our culture...

The Office alum John Krasinski directed his first feature film, Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, in 2009, and will be stepping behind the camera once more for a drama called The Hollars. Deadline reports that the actor will star in the movie as well, and has enlisted Anna Kendrick, Richard Jenkins, and Margo Martindale to round out the cast.
The film is described as Steel Magnolias meets Garden State, and tells the tale of a NYC artist named John Hollar (Krasinski), who takes his girlfriend (Kendrick) back to his Middle America hometown on the eve of his mother’s (Martindale) brain surgery. There, he comes face to face with the crazy life he left behind, as he deals with his dysfunctional family, high school friends, his father (Jenkins), and his over-eager ex.

The drought between his debut and sophomore will come to an end in 2013. A full eight years since Ellie Parker (Sundance ’05), which was based on the short of the same name (Sundance ’01), Scott Coffey’s Adult World was shot in Syracuse, NY back in February with a trio that includes Emma Roberts (who attends the fest yearly in four back to back years with The Winning Season, Twelve, The Art of Getting By, Celeste & Jesse Forever), Evan Peters and John Cusack. Wolf Parade frontman Dan Boeckner scored the comedy which I think Sundance programmers might want to include because it fits a certain niche demographic that they like to sample yearly.

Young Brit Douglas Booth might be making Miley Cyrus "Lol" as a love interest in her upcoming film, but there won't be much laughing in the next film he's attached to. "Life at These Speeds," which will costar Billy Crudup, is an inspirational tale of one teen who turns his personal demons into amazing success as a long-distance runner.
The story is based on the young adult novel by Jeremy Jackson about a popular 8th grader, Kevin, whose random decision to ride home with his parents instead of taking the school van home from a track meet inadvertently saves his life. When the van takes a nosedive into a river, all of his teammates are killed, including his best friend.
Naturally, Kevin is devastated by grief and guilt, and he attempts to start his life over at a different high school. The only thing that really saves him, though, is running.

Is Selena Gomez the next Disney star to shed her family-friend image?
The 19-year-old star of "Wizards of Waverly Place" is taking on director, Harmony Korine's, latest project, "Spring Breakers."
It won't be zany antics and fun in the sun for Gomez, who stars alongside James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens and Emma Roberts, as the film revolves around a group of broke college girls who rob a restaurant to pay for their spring break trip, and a drug and arms dealer they find themselves entangled with.
It's a far cry from "Princess Protection Program," but Gomez tells MTV News she's really excited to start filming the movie and beginning the next chapter in her career.
"It's a different character than I have ever played before. It's a different kind of vibe I think than people are used to seeing in me," she said. "What you're going to see is more raw,...

Though she appeared to come out of nowhere to steal the opening scene of The Social Network and then get cast as Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's upcoming The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Rooney Mara spent some time paying her dues in movies nobody saw. She was the star of the 2010 A Nightmare on Elm Street remake, for one thing, but also had two films premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2009 that then seemed to sink out of sight-- The Winning Season, a basketball drama with Sam Rockwell that eventually opened to little fanfare last year, and Tanner Hall, a boarding school drama. Now, bolstered by Mara's newfound fame, Tanner Hall is finally getting a release and a trailer to go with it. It premiered at Vulture and you can also take a look at it below. The background story behind the film seems a lot...

If you're like me, you're trapped in the house under two feet of snow and you've got a lot of time on your hands. So it's the perfect day to read "The Sports Guy" Bill Simmons' lengthy treatise on the state of sports movies on Espn.com. It is an interesting (if a tad long-winded) read but, hey, what else are you gonna do? Shovel the driveway? I didn't think so.
Simmons begins by identifying what a down year 2010 was for sports movies: besides "The Fighter," you had the inspirational horse drama (obviously -- all horse dramas are inspirational) "Secretariat," the basketball romantic comedy "Just Wright," (in the proud tradition of "Forget Paris") and the "Bad News Bears"-y girls' basketball movie "The Winning Season" starring Sam Rockwell. The dearth of sports movies, a typically dependable cinematic staple, coupled with all the talk about how hard it was for...

The Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton, Maggie Grace
The Plot: An ex-con (Johnson) sets out to avenge his brother’s death.
The Buzz: Dwayne Johnson is back in straight-up action mode — after The Tooth Fairy and The Race to Witch Mountain — I was wondering if he’d ever return. Yes, Faster is certainly an action film, but it appears to be more than that; it appears to be a wildly rampaging, no-holds-barred, glorious tale of bullet-sweet vengeance. Well, that’s my gut-shot feeling anyway. Billy Bob Thornton is poised to play the perfect foil as the “slow justice” cop that stands in Johnson’s vengeful way. There are a couple solid female actresses here as well,...

Every one of us is expendable-ah! Sorry, I just had to get that out of my system. Anyway, as you can see, a line has clearly been drawn this week with the two biggest releases, The Expendables and Eat Pray Love, catering very heavily to male and female demographics respectively. Other noteworthy new discs include The Winning Season starring Sam Rockwell, Rob Reiner's Flipped, Joaquin Phoenix mock doc I'm Still Here, and, from the visionary director of Catwoman, Fire And Ice: The Dragon Chronicles! If that's not enough to keep you occupied, we've also got the nuclear arms documentary Countdown to Zero, the newly restored cut of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, and pretty much all of Tyler Perry's complete filmography on Blu-ray! What will you be buying or renting this week? By now I'm sure most of you already know my opinion of this title seeing how I discussed it last week and posted my review yesterday, but if noy, click here to get the full rundown. America Lost and Found: The Bbs Story (Blu-ray) Producers Bob Rafelson, Bert Schneider, and Steve Blauner formed Bbs Productions, which operated between 1968 and 1972, and this box set from Criterion is the result. I have not yet received my review copy and based on what I see online it appears only DVD Beaver has received and reviewed the set. The DVD version hits shelves on December 14.
Just below are the films included. You can get more on each at Criterion right here.
