A Simple Gem
corrosion-220 August 2009
Be Hamin Sadegi (As Simple As That) is likely to divide the audiences into two groups: those who like a strong narrative & plenty of drama are likely to be disappointed whilst fans of naturalistic cinema, such as those of Kiarostami, Olmi, etc will find a gem of a movie. Be Hamin .. is a direct descendant of the late Iranian director Sohrab Shahid Sales's A Simple Event. On the surface it seems to be a simple tale of the everyday life of Tahereh, a typical Iranian housewife. She looks after her two children while her husband is at work, does the cooking, cleaning etc and gives a helping hand to her neighbors. She is also very religious. Although Tahereh appears very calm & collected, beneath the surface she is facing a crisis. She is a talented artist who writes beautiful poetry but is finding it difficult to find any time for this. She has already given up painting due to lack of time. She feels unappreciated and unloved by her husband & children. In fact the only one who gives her any encouragement is her arts teacher. In her time of need she is resorting to a religion helpline to offer her a solution. Be Hamin is beautifully written and acted. As Tahereh, Hengameh Ghaziani is outstanding and skillfully manages to show a woman who is trying to suppress her emotions. Highly recommended.
