Bitch, you dead.
We closed out July with a look at Joshua Grannell’s 2010 campy horror comedy All About Evil, and kicked off July discussing the ins and outs of the photography industry in the American giallo Eyes of Laura Mars. Now we’re getting serious with a discussion on the afterlife and religion in queer director Alejandro Amenábar‘s The Others (which just had a Criterion Blu-Ray announcement).
The Others sees Grace (Nicole Kidman), the devoutly religious mother of Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley), move her family to the English coast during World War II. She awaits word on her missing husband while protecting her children from a rare photosensitivity disease that causes the sun to harm them. Anne claims she sees ghosts, and while Grace initially thinks the new servants are playing tricks on her, chilling events and visions make her believe something supernatural may be occurring.

Let’s All Chant.
July wound up being another wild month as Trace and I veered all over the place. From cross-dressing serial killers in Insidious: Chapter 2 and Psycho, to trans representation in Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, to the incredibly queer cast and crew of Peaches Christ’s All About Evil. Now we’re closing out the month with an American Giallo in the John Carpenter-scripted Irvin Kerschner flick Eyes of Laura Mars (1978).
In the film, Faye Dunaway stars as the titular character. Laura Mars is an incredibly successful fashion photographer whose graphic depictions of sex and violence have caused a stir. The attention on her spirals when her photographs are revealed to be mirrors of real life murders and the killer begins targeting her and her friends.
The film features a stacked cast, including Raul Julia, Brad Dourif, René Auberjonois and a baby faced Tommy Lee Jones...

The Business of Show!
We spent July discussing gender in a myriad of ways: cross-dressing serial killers in Insidious: Chapter 2 and Psycho, as well as trans representation in Escape Room: Tournament of Champions. To keep things in theme, we’re closing out the month with a look at Joshua Grannel‘s (aka drag queen Peaches Christ‘s) 2010 horror comedy All About Evil, which is currently streaming on Shudder!
All About Evil sees an unhinged theatre owner named Deborah (Natasha Lyonne) begin making snuff films and screening them at her decrepit San Francisco theater — presenting them as fictional works — in order to prevent the theater from going bankrupt. Unfortunately for Deborah, her biggest fan (Thomas Dekker) catches on to her scheme and tries to stop her before her antics get his mother (Cassandra Peterson) killed.

First off, let me give full credit where it is due for that headline - I first heard the genius title mashup "The Diary of Anne Frankenstein" in gay horror director Joshua Grannell's (aka Peaches Christ) wonderfully demented horror comedy All About Evil. (It also later appeared in the anthology flick Chillerama.) But I'm delighted that American Horror Story gave me the perfect opportunity to use it. Martyred Jewish teenagers and mad scientists - they go together like chocolate and peanut butter! ("You've got your martyred Jewish teen in my mad scientist!" "No, you've got your mad scientist in my martyred Jewish teen!")
Anyway, for once we don't start an episode with Jenna Dewan Tatum squawking to raise the dead and Adam Levine using his remaining arm to text his agent for a way the hell out of what was supposed to be a 5-minute cameo, and Thank God For That.

Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film has long been a huge fan of the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival. Every year we’re extremely impressed with the way it pokes, prods, pushes and stabs the horror genre in entertaining new directions through its diverse selection of boundary breaking movies. Some of our favorite horror flicks of the past few years — such as James Eaves‘ Bane, Rona Mark‘s Strange Girls and Stuart Simpson‘s El Monstro Del Mar — came to us through Spooky Movie.
This year will mark Spooky Movie’s seventh year in existence and it should prove to be a major milestone in the fest’s history as it will move to a new home at the prestigious AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland. As the festival busily prepares for their biggest edition yet to be held on October 10-18, we thought we’d check...

Well hello there! Welcome to this week's installment of The Ae Movie Club, the most eclectic collection of eccentric characters since Wadsworth poured after-dinner drinks in the study. ("Not the cognac - just in case!")
I'm a very bad club president (self-appointed), because I didn't see a single one of the movies opening this week. Forty lashes with a wet Twizzler for me. But never fear! There's still plenty of cinematic fat to chew.
For starters, I've got a new Fast Five celebrating romance in honor of today's release of The Vow. I've got a great report from a recent Rocky Horror revival where star Barry Bostwick got more into character than expected (it's seriously awesome), as well as some seriously Vintage Beefcake courtesy of a studly leading man of days past.

The San Francisco Comedy Festival, better known as Sf Sketchfest, had quite the surprise when special guest Barry Bostwick was invited to introduced his classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Host Peaches Christ presided over the evening's events, which were ... interesting.

A love letter to John Waters written in blood, Joshua Grannell’s debut feature, All About Evil, dares to be everything a gushing fan boy, or girl, or drag queen could want. The film opens with a wink and a nod to Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? as little Deborah Tennis is gearing up to take the stage for her first performance at her father’s movie theater, before a screening of The Wizard of Oz.
Dressed as Dorothy, and visibly nervous, even after a pep talk by her father. Sadly things don’t go well, as she is heckled by her peers and further embarrassed by her literal wicked witch of a mother who laughs when things go awry for the poor girl. Cut to present day, all grown up, and surely none the better for it considering her upbringing, Deborah (Natasha Lyonne) has inherited her father’s movie...

There are few horror icons who are instantly recognizable. Karloff, Lugosi, Price, Cushing, Lee ... but there are even less who are women. Arguably the most recognizable of these is the luscious Elvira - Mistress of the Dark and her creator, Cassandra Peterson.
Elvira came into the public eye in the late spring of 1981 when Peterson auditioned for a horror movie host role at Khj-tv when the powers-that-be there sent out a casting all for someone to host their weekly horror show. The sultry Elvira - clad in a black, gothic, cleavage-enhancing gown - soon became a cultural phenomenon. With her dark, Morticia Addams-like makeup, a towering black beehive wig, and wickedly vampish appearance, her comical character was offset by a quirky, quick-witted personality and valley girl-type speech. Soon, her influence was seen on everything from beverage ads to pinball games to major motion pictures.

Poster for the 12th Annual Tromadance Film Festival
Lloyd Kaufman and his Troma troupe have just unveiled their poster for the TromaDance Film Festival’s 12th outing (April 22-23, 2011 in Asbury Park, New Jersey). While newsworthy only to a particular demographic, Troma-heads are doing everything they can to reach out to new fans of the form by keeping the film festival free.
Joshua Grannell’s “All About Evil” is screening, as are Drew Bolduc’s “The Taint” and Miguel Angel Vivas’ “Kidnapped.” The festival also features a panel with old-school animation guru Bill Plympton, scream queen Debbie Rochon, the managing editor of Fangoria magazine, and the New York Film Commissioner.
Entrance to the screenings is free, filmmakers are not charged submission fees for having their films considered and there are no VIP reservations. If that weren’t reason enough to turn up to this schlock fest in New Jersey then...

All About Evil Favorite horror comedy? This era of horror films peaked in the 80's when the teen comedy was at its peak also. It seemed like just about every horror film that came out between 1986 - 1988 was a horror comedy. Some films that come to mind instantly from this sub-genre is Evil Dead 2, The Return of the Living Dead, April Fool's Day, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3-5 and Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II, etc. Yet when horror dried up in the late 80's, so did the merger of horrror and comedy. Sure, we had horror films that had some humor in them, but it was never as equally balanced as it was in the 80's. So my pick is a welcomed return to this era of horror films. So without further hesitation, I give you........

On April 22-23, Asbury Park, NJ will once again be taken over by the most toxic film festival in the world! (That’s a good thing.) The 12th annual Tromadance is two days and nights filled with depraved cinematic abuses that will leave you a shattered, emotional wreck. (That’s a good thing, too.)
This year, the fest will screen three feature films, a buttload of shorts, plus two mini-retrospectives.
The features are: 1. Drew Bolduc and Dan Nelson‘s gonzo The Taint, a social satire filled with so much gore and sexual degeneracy you might want to wear a raincoat to the screening; 2. Joshua Grannell‘s horror spoof All About Evil, starring Natasha Lyonne and Cassandra Peterson about a psychotic film auteur who kills people on camera; 3. Miguel Angel Vivas’ brutal assault film Kidnapped.
Some of the short film highlights include Victoria Cook‘s triumphant return to Tromadance with Devil...

After a woeful two-year hiatus — and actually it had been assumed as a death — the San Francisco Underground Short Film Festival is back from the dead with a vengeance! Once again headed up by the Bay Area’s midnight movie grande dame Peaches Christ, this year’s Sfusff begins at the unholy early hour of 7:30 p.m., so that means tons more fun and outrageousness for the fest this time.
Taking place at the Victoria Theater on April 15, there will be 21 short films, including the centerpiece of the fest: The World Premiere of director xuxE’s Devious, Inc., a musical adventure set in the world of kinky fetish competitions. The film is also not a short film. It’s a feature-length movie that will close the fest at 10:30 p.m. and will be preceded by one of Peaches Christ’s astounding live performances.

Directed/Written by: Gregg Araki
Starring: Thomas Dekker, Haley Bennett, Juno Temple, Chris Zylka, Roxane Mesquida, James Duval and Kelly Lynch
Independent Spirit Award-nominated director Gregg Araki (“Mysterious Skin”) delivers another mind trip about drinking, drugging, oversexed hot young adults with “Kaboom,” a thriller/comedy/college sex romp. Thomas Dekker plays Smith, a college freshman who, when not lusting after his hot surfer roommate Thor (Chris Zylka) or exchanging witticisms with his best friend, cynical and acerbic lesbian Stella (Haley Bennett), is haunted by an eerie dream night after night. Things get crazy, paranoia sets in, everyone has sex with practically everyone else, and once the hallucinations, witchcraft and animal-masked killers start popping up, your head will be spinning.
Harking back to vintage Araki like “Nowhere,” the lightweight “Kaboom” is wildly watchable and delightfully un-pc. There is some real...

From director Deon Taylor comes a new edge of your seat horror film- Chain Letter.
Nikki Reed (Twilight, New Moon) stars as Jessie, a high-school student addicted to her laptop and cell phone – to every mode of cyber-speech. But suddenly this communication turns from amusement to menace. She and six of her friends become the subjects of a chain letter that is much more than the usual combination of annoyance and guilt. Arriving through e-mail and text message, the letter carries a threat: that if it is not passed on, the party to blame faces an unexpected, horrible death.
Unstoppable and barely believable…this is a message that cannot be deleted. But to forward this message on would ensure the death of a friend – does one save or be saved? As time runs out, the lethal letter’s instructions become more challenging – it is up to the survivors to find...

After taking a couple years off to concentrate on his own filmmaking activities, Joshua Grannell, aka Peaches Christ, is reviving his San Francisco Underground Short Film Festival for 2011. Yes, the festival is currently open for submissions, but, as always, you have to live in the Bay Area to have your film get in.
The Sfusff ran for several years as the concluding event of Peaches Christ’s wildly popular summer Midnight Mass screening series, which began in 1998 and would screen several cult Hollywood and indie film classics over the summer. Horror was at its peak from 1973 - 1988 so much so that there was TV series based off of horror films, toys, shirts and merchandising all connected to the various films that came out around this time. So it goes without saying, that some of the most active genre fans out there are somewhere in the mid 20 to early 30's age bracket since they grew up watching the films released during this era which included the A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, The Exorcist, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Poltergeist, The Amityville Horror, An American Werewolf in London, Hellraiser, Dawn of the Dead, etc.
Now go back and think to what made you fall in love with the genre to begin with. Was it the sense of dread of a sluggishly paced zombie sneaking upon you to eat your brains? Was it the grindhouse kind of flavor that The Texas Chain Saw Massacre embodied?...

Director Joshua Grannell has always had a deep love of all those cheesy type horror movies that they used to air late at night. He's also had a passion for old school style theaters that play revivals of those late night cheesy movies. So it's no wonder he managed to create a valentine to those theaters and to those movies with his very first feature length film, All About Evil. He also gave one of his idols, Elviria aka Cassandra Peterson, a great little role sans costume as a concerned mom trying to understand her son's love of the horror genre. All About Evil features an all star cast of players including Natasha Lyonne, Thomas Dekker, Noah Segan, Mink Stole, Jade Ramsey, Nikita Ramsey, Ariel Hart, Lyndsy Kail, Santia Andrews and Julie Caitlin Brown. Here's what director Joshua Grannell had to say about his film, All About Evil which is...

Screenings in harbours, not cinemas. Burlesque instead of after-film Q&As. Sipping urine instead of Frascati. Chris Michael on the new breed of film festival rejecting the Cannes way
Name the festival at which the following event took place. Cult American musician Ian Svenonius stands on an 18th-century military tower a mile from the shore, his gravity-defying hair whipping around in the breeze. He begins an impromptu play, with three randomly selected audience members improvising a rap behind him. Svenonius is talking as fast as he can in order to finish before the tide rushes in and we all get stranded in the English Channel overnight. Latitude? The Brighton biennial? A Comintern club night? None of the above.
If you answered the Branchage film festival, however, you'd be bang on. Svenonius's deadpan performance of "post-apocalyptic cinema" is part of an energetically loopy and welcoming event – now in its third year...

Actor Noah Segan is quickly becoming a genre favorite around these parts what with Cabin Fever 2, Someone's Knocking at the Door, All About Evil, Chain Letter and the disturbing indie hit Deadgirl already under his belt. Now he's back for more, and we couldn't be happier!
Bloody Disgusting reports that Segan (pictured right) will also be toplining Séance, a new indie from writer/director Alex Wright (Two Wolves).
The flick will be shot this coming November in Los Angeles and follows the exploits of four friends who think it would be fun to have a séance in a funeral home. A medium begins the event that ends badly when one of the friends becomes possessed.

Noah Segan is making a name for himself in the horrorverse. He blew us away in Deadgirl, creeped us out in Someone's Knocking at the Door, and also takes roles in the upcoming All About Evil, Chain Letter and Undocumented. We learned this afternoon that he'll also be toplining Seance, a new indie from writer director Alex Wright (Two Wolves). Filming in Los Angeles this November, the pic follows four friends who think it would be fun to have a seance in one of their funeral homes. A medium begins the event that ends badly when one of the friend becomes possessed.

Cassandra Peterson tells us about her role in Peaches Christ's outrageous new horror film All About Evil, which she calls "A really fun movie."
In the as-yet-to-be-released darkly comedic and demented horror film All About Evil, Cassandra Peterson, better known as horror hostess Elvira (who is returning to TV this September), plays the role of the loving and determined mother desperate to save her son (played by Thomas Dekker) from the clutches of a crazed Natasha Lyonne.
Perterson can only describe it as "if Herschell Gordon Lewis and John Waters had a movie together," and goes on to talk about her role as 'mom';
Quote:
I’m really the one, normal, straight person in the movie. Everyone else is sorta over the top, a little big, a little bizarre, and I’m just this normal mom trying to protect my son from the evil dealings going on. And I...
