A solid enough opening episode.

DI Annika Strandhed joins a new unit in Scotland, on her first day she's heading up a murder case, after a man is pulled out of The Clyde.

I liked it, family members watched it, and said they didn't rate it, I can't say I was wowed, but I did enjoy it. The story is interesting enough, especially after the second murder, best of all, the views, some of the shots are breathtaking.

Good acting, I'm impressed by both Nicola Walker and Jamie Sives.

Annika's monologues to the camera are going to take some getting used to, I'm not going to lie, I'm finding it a little irritating, and perhaps unnecessary.

A solid start, 6/10.

Warning: Spoilers
The UK is abundant with high quality crime investigation series so I wondered what to expect of Annika. I was not disappointed with the debut episode that's for sure. The writing is witty and the performances are realistic. Nicola Walker never lets us down with her asides to the audience and her professionalism. We also meet Jamie Sives who wanted Annika's job, Katie ("Harry Potter") Leung and Ukweli Roach.

Good story

A good introduction for all main characters. I have always admired Nicola Walker. This is the second series I am seeing Jamie Sives in (no including GoT).

I disliked the talking to the camera and the quoting/comparisons from Moby Dick.

Different, but well written

I am a huge Nicola Walker fan. We got PBS masterpiece just so we could watch this show. I've read the other reviews where people say that they hate that she talks to the camera. I admit at first it seemed kind of odd, but after a while I realized that it helped not only with her character development, but added humor. It is not your typical murder show. And that is actually refreshing. History is embedded in an unusual way. I've watched three episodes and I feel it's gotten better. I love the show. And contrary to the opinions of some, I think Annika is a great, humanized character with flaws like all of us.

Collector's mention is a bit of a spoiler

Warning: Spoilers
It took me a (short) while to appreciate the Kevin Spacey like talking to the camera--and the coffee--glad to see some originality. Where I was off though is the MHU from the beginning testing its own theory and Finlay indicating he flees the scene for collector's. I thought a big part of the episode (mistakingly) the Finlay ignored words were going to be the outcome-- sorry, this plot mistake, I would have rather given in private.

Episode 1

Nicola Walker is Annika in this new crime drama for the Alibi channel.

Originally from Norway. Annika has been promoted and is the new DI at the Maritime Homicide Unit in Scotland.

Just in time as a body has been fished out with a harpoon through his eye. It seems the dead man was an owner of a whale watching boat that had been involved in an incident where a female passenger died.

In the first episode, Annika has to deal with the murder, her new teammates, a hostage situation involving one of her officer's and a moody teenage daughter. She hates her new home and school.

The episode has Annika talking to the camera in a droll manner, mainly about Moby Dick.

There are so many British crime dramas these days. The present day ones all seem to become indistinguishable. The last one set in Scotland I saw had bits filmed in Bolton, which in a funny way made it stand out.

This one has the piece to camera. It was passable, there was a twist concerning the dead victim. The scenery was nice concerning Annika's home but the first episode did not blow me away.
