Great episode, completely had me fooled.

Warning: Spoilers
The thing I love about The Mentalist is that unlike other light hearted crime shows, I can almost never guess who the killer is. This episode is probably one of the best five in the first season, which in my opinion is one of the greatest debut seasons of all time! The episode starts with a man carrying a body into CBI, however, thinking it's a bag of potatoes. It takes Patrick Jane to realise that he has been hypnotised and probably didn't kill the girl. But for me besides the clever storyline there are two thing I think I should praise the episode for. 1. The second to last scene were the killer is revealed and Jane is almost thrown of a building. 2. Owen Yeomans acting. He's the man who plays Wayne Rigsby, not only the funniest supporting character but the most talented actor. For one, he's welsh and puts on a great accent and two, the scene where he is with Jane in the park really shows how good an actor he is. So to sum up, a great episode that for mentalist fans shouldn't be missed.

Hypnotised to kill!
Tweekums8 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
As this episode opens a man drags a bag through the streets before heading into the CBI offices; here it becomes apparent that there is a body in the bag and he is arrested. His behaviour is very strange… he seems to believe the bag is full of potatoes! Jane believes that the man is in a hypnotic trance although the others are initially sceptical. It turns out that the man is a salesman and had been attending a group where hypnosis is used to help its members optimise themselves. The victim's sister informs the team that they both worked for the group for soon its leader is the chief suspect but another person who works there confesses and Rigsby starts to act a little strangely… somebody has hypnotised him!

I thought this episode was really good; it started well with an intriguing opening which made the viewer wonder if the man with the body was guilty or, as Jane suggested, hypnotised. Further suspects are introduced but when the killer is finally revealed it is somebody who is far from obvious. The fact that Rigsby gets hypnotised only adds to the fun as he starts acting somewhat out of character… and at one point, after a suggestion from Jane, doing what he really wanted to do! Owain Yeoman stands out as Rigsby; it was fun having his character play a larger role in the story. The rest of the cast are solid too. Overall I'm sure fans of the series will really enjoy this episode.

The Sack of Potatoes
claudio_carvalho2 December 2021
When a man arrives at the CBI Building dragging a dead woman in a sack believing it is a sack of potatoes, the agents first impression is that he is lunatic. Soon he is identified as the car salesman Carl Resnick and the victim as Mary Beth Hendricks and Patrick informs that he was hypnotized. When Mary Beth's sister Lindsey comes to the CBI office, Patrick, Lisbon, and the agents learn that the two sisters work with the motivator Dr. Royston Daniel, Patrick says that he is a great hypnotizer, and he becomes the prime suspect of the murder of Mary Beth. Is he the killer?

"Russet Potatoes" is a funny episode of "The Mentalist", with a plot full of twists. The hypnotized Agent Wayne Rigsby is responsible for hilarious moments along the story. My vote is eight.

A great episode whose potential would never be realized again.

The tension that occurs in this episode and all the plot twists it contains are simply magnificent, the whole theme related to the hypnotist academy is wonderful, unfortunately, the series perhaps seeing that they would be a little more "realistic" decided to discard this concept.

It would have been amazing if any disciple of Red John had participated in the academy and either because of their talent or ability, become an additional threat to Jane, we were very rarely shown their hypnosis abilities during the series and the few times they came up, they didn't feel as epic as they did in this chapter.

The truth is, despite how realistic the series tries to be, it presents so many fantastic phenomena that having become involved with the academy again wouldn't have seemed strange.

However, Great Episode.
