Scooby Doo meets Sherlock Holmes
TheLittleSongbird19 August 2022
Scooby Doo and Sherlock Holmes gel so well together, which was already evident in the 'Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo' episode "The Night Ghoul of Wonderworld" (one of the best episodes of that show). Am a huge fan of the Scooby Doo franchise, despite not all the incarnations being great, and am also a huge fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories and a vast majority of the adaptations. The idea for "Sherlock Doo" is a great one.

And more than lived up to, in not just the second best two parter of 'The New Scooby Doo Mysteries' but also one of the show's best episodes. "Sherlock Doo" is one of the outings of 'The New Scooby Doo Mysteries' that was a favourite as a child and while not as great now perhaps pretty much everything enjoyed when younger still works wonders now. Where it does improve though through older eyes is that the references are easier to get.

Beginning with what "Sherlock Doo" does well, the animation has a very nice atmosphere (particularly the London backgrounds) and it's easy on the eye. The London setting is perfect and is very spooky at night. The music doesn't jar and the energy and atmosphere are just right. The intro is still memorable, visually and musically. The voice acting of the regulars is all fine and all the gang are on great form and true to character. Shaggy and Scooby really shine when trying to not break the be silent rules and Scrappy to me was not a problem in this show (though he is annoying in 'Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo').

It is an entertaining scripted episode with some nice set pieces, like in the climactic moments of the first part and how they break out of jail. The climax is also nicely done. There are also plenty of loving references to the Sherlock Holmes stories and characters, which will be a treat for fans, especially the supporting characters' names. The ghost of Sherlock Holmes is still creepy, the eeriness of his first appearance holds up. The story is eventful and mystery-wise this is one of the stronger episodes, as it is a long way from thin, keeps one guessing and also has a classic Scooby Doo feel.

Having said all that, "Sherlock Doo" isn't quite great. Didn't care for the very affected accents that sound more half Cockney half Australian than RP English. Stapleton particularly.

The ending, in a very rushed reveal, is not a surprise at all, actually thought the perpetrator was obvious as soon as they were introduced (the perpetrator and ghost sound the same) which did take away from the suspense. Only the truth of the blueprints surprised when it came to when things were revealed in too hasty a way.

Overall, still really like it. 8/10.
