The Reason
Hitchcoc8 March 2022
Excellent series of action sequences. We are finally given a reason for what is going on. We are told why Kliner was only a pawn in the game and why the bank employee ended up where he ended up. His wife finally spills the beans on what transpired. Reacher meets with Castillo who gives him a lesson on counterfeiting techniques and a police officer is brought into the fold. The last sequence is quite devastating.

Much better
Leofwine_draca22 May 2022
A much better episode as the pieces slot together. Plenty of action, intrigue and excitement and the detour to New York I think works really well. Let's hope this quality continues through now.

Good episode even with one mistake near the end..
Lythas_856 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Yep, the other reviewer is right.. Reacher broke hitman dude's right arm twice.. even if he had just twisted a little bit and not broken he would not be able to jump around and then grab the knife with his right hand and move like that.. lol

but anyway, it was a good episode overall.. some character development from finlay about his wife.. roscoe being careless and running away instead of just busting the dudes in the forest but then again, she is not reacher.. he would have just shoot the guys inside the car point blank after sneaking up on them..

we had some backstory to how nerd guy got entangled in the mess and finally from the professor, whatever the hell joe was doing.. this was a turning point and now reacher has all the cards and knows 100% of what is happening..

i know they nerfed him a bit, struggling to kill people but it is a show and the showrunners would not make reacher a one hit kill kinda guy.. it would be boring,we know.. but the breaking the arm twice was funny lol.

In the fight with the hitman in the New York alleyway, didn't Reacher break the dude's arm twice? But somehow kept fighting, even jumped up a couple floors? I know it's fiction, I like the fight but I just found it a little hard to ignore.

The Kleiner Family Business
lavatch8 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
One of my favorite characters is Mr. Mosely, the town barber of Margrave, who refuses to leave despite the corruption. With the help of Reacher, he may be able to reclaim his city.

Finlay opens up to Reacher about his guilt in not doing enough to save his terminally ill wife. He continues to maintain her mobile phone so that he may hear her voice.

Mrs. "Charlie" Hubbell confesses to Roscoe the true story of her husband Paul, who was coerced by Kleiner into becoming the accountant for a massive counterfeiting operation. It turns out that both Hubbell and Kleiner were in over their heads. Hubbell essentially learned of his fate in a horse stable in Venezuela.

Reacher travels to New York where he meets with Professor Castillo, who knew that Joe had penetrated the counterfeit ring in Georgia. Reacher enlists the former army lieutenant Diaz to keep the professor in protective custody. For the first time, Reacher realizes that the money production was not occurring in Venezuela, but in Margrave! Apparently, Kleiner found access to the special paper necessary to print C-notes. Hence the episode title of "Papier."

To be continued....

This is the episode that brought it together
deedress16 February 2024
This is the episode that brought it together for me. Specifically when Rankin plays the Kansas song, "Carry on my Wayward Son". Listen to the song, think about Reacher's music as a white guy and think about Rankin's music as a black guy. This was a reveal that was first hinted at in the very first episode and Reacher's reason for visiting Margrave. It points to thier differences and their commonality. Such good writting for an action series. I now know why it has held my interest so well for 5 episodes. On the surface you could say it's just a cheap joke and laugh at Rankin's musical interest but it goes far beyond a cheap joke.

Charlie and the kids are under attack Money is supposed to move out of U. S. Reacher hangs

This episode felt better than the past couple.

Roscoe is apparently a god tier marksman. Enjoyed the truck scene. Some high class suspense there. Loved the alleyway fight. That was some good choreography.

Love the character development for Finlay. I totally didn't expect a thing about his wife.

It looks like the animal feed and the following toxins are somehow connected to creating the paper used to make the counterfeit notes. That's gotta be the only explanation. Also, the fact that more about Hubble is uncovered, it seems more likely that he's alive than not. First, the finance guy is always almost the most important person (think Marty from "Ozark"). Somebody's gotta be able to do the laundering. Second, we are also never explicitly shown of his death or his body. Perhaps Hubble could be behind a part of this. It seems odd that Kliner is killed once we realized that he still is the kingpin. Things are picking up in Margrave!

The storyline's coming together.
LegendaryFang5626 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was one of this first season's better ones. It was certainly better than the previous episode. The pacing was slow, I guess. Or neither slow nor fast; just right. Something about it made that not matter, although that seemed to matter somewhat previously. And the storyline is beginning to come together. There were also a few moments that elevated the episode entirely.

We learned something vital about Finlay's wife, which added a lot more depth to his character; through that, a lot of depth was also added to his relationship with Reacher, how he confided that information to him; despite his earlier conversation with Mosley, in this same episode. Not only that, their moments together, along with the further building up of their friendship/bond, were pretty good.

And one thing that I noticed was that there wasn't a flashback in this episode. I'm pretty sure there's been one in every episode up to this point, until now. I doubt that means anything; I just thought it was interesting. I feel like there will be another one in either the next episode or the finale or both. Maybe an important one, one that goes beyond exposition and background into Reacher's character. Or maybe not.

  • Picard is super sus. Those two guys conveniently knew where the Hubbles were, yet they were also not making a move on them for some reason. We know (from the previous episode) that the EPA investigator Joe was looking into was gunned down in his home: a dead federal agent, so naturally, the FBI stepped in. Same post-mortem M. O. as Joe aside, the FBI "determined" it was a random burglary gone bad: despite the evident details contradicting that. Know who we know is an FBI agent? We know with whatever's going on, the people involved have a lot of influence, the means to do whatever they want, whenever they want. Taking out federal agents, civilians: making files disappear at a federal agency; on top of instilling fear into people to make them do their bidding, rather than taking them out as well.

  • Lol, did anyone notice that subtle botch by Alan Ritchson? He tried to throw the suit jacket (?) into the garbage can, nonchalantly: and messed up. Nice save by him, though. Imagine how hilarious it would've been to have no choice but to redo that, and all because you messed up throwing a piece of clothing into a garbage can. Then again, who knows; maybe that wasn't a botch.

  • That fight sequence at the end was great. I think it's my favorite so far. I never really give it any thought about what order I'd put all the fight sequences in so far: but I'd say the one in the previous episode where Reacher gave Kliner Jr. And his two buddies, cousin included, a beating, was my favorite one yet, and I feel like the one at the end of this episode topped it. The latter may not have been better, objectively; it may have been better objectively, but I think I liked it just a tiny bit more.

The halfway point of the episode, I feel like, is when/where it started getting pretty good. Before that, the highlight was the moments between Reacher and Finlay, but that's pretty much it. This episode was decent. I'm hoping the next episode has super exciting moments: same with the finale.

Dumber than dumb
jeroen-1068 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Why would the bad guys who are in bed with Kliner Sr. Decide to kill him so they can take over, if such a high profile murder would attract law enforcement at scale and lead to the Kliner Industries being investigated (and thus exposing their illegal activities)?

The constant dumbing down of the show's writing until we are treated as kids is starting to piss me off.

The Oscar Finlay guy breaking and entering a huge company without setting off any alarms and lock picking like they do in a computer games or 80s movies is completely absurd. Are the writers insane? It's insulting to the audience almost.

The irony is that this episode has one of the strongest dialogues of the season as well (the 'horse-stable scene'). That was a great a great analogy and felt like a realistic setup to drive the accountant in a corner. So... they CAN do it, the writers!

Regardless...Cancel this show ASAP!

World's worst special forces and the world's strongest tie
puzgolac29 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Overall, it was not a bad episode. A bit slow, but things are moving, and there were some exciting moments. Again, however, there were some completely ridiculous moments that break the immersion and worsen the viewing experience.

Kliner's death seems a bit forced. Such a high profile murder is bound to bring heaps of unwanted attention to the counterfeiting operation. We'll see how they explain the reason behind it, but for now it just seems like it was done just for the twists.

We know by now that the Venezuelan hit men are (ex) special forces. Yet, somehow, they are utterly incompetent when doing surveillance and chasing their prey. And Roscoe, the "99th percentile in intelligence" girl wonder from the sticks, is somehow a superior fighter and marksman than the special forces operators. She can not only see them in what is supposed to be pitch black woods, but shoots them with pinpoint accuracy. She is also able to carry the injured girl for several kilometers, despite weighing not much more than her.

Reacher and Finlay follow the psycho redneck for hours upon hours, yet they have no patience to wait half an hour more and be sure that he is asleep, but go to inspect his truck the second he turns off the lights in his room. Why? So we can get some forced suspense, that amounts to nothing in the end.

Reacher can apparently convince a cop he has seen for the first time in his life to give the professor police protection, but do it pretty much illegally by "keeping it off the books". How? Well, they are both ex military. "Yo, buddy, I see by your shoelaces that you were in the army; so was I, so you must do whatever I ask you to do."

And finally, we have the backstreet fight, in which Reacher breaks the other guy's arm twice (because after the first time it healed miraculously and he felt no consequences) and then he strangles him with the world's strongest tie, that can withstand a Sasquatch like Reacher hanging from it without snapping.

I like this show and think that it is great fun, but it sure has its share of needlessly stupid moments.

Papier
Prismark1031 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I noticed that Reacher has just become a little formulaic. Some of the beats of the long form serial being rather obvious.

At least Kliner is not the big bad as he is unceremoniously pushed out of the picture.

Reacher learns that Kliner was involved in a counterfeiting ring. Something that Reacher's brother was investigating.

The action moved to New York with a fight scene which did look a bit silly.
