Bubbly Piper (adorable Haylee Nelson) and feisty Ashley (a winningly brassy portrayal by Amy Baklini) are a lesbian couple who run afoul of a pair of vicious redneck sisters in the New Mexico desert. Writer/director Peter Grendle maintains a zippy pace and unflinchingly harsh tone from start to finish: Done with a refreshing dearth of pretense, this honey gets right down to gory brass tacks straight from the get-go, doesn't pull any punches, and thrusts the viewer smack dab into the nasty thick of what's happening to our personable protagonists. Jiji Hise and Aileen Mell are truly chilling with their foul psychotic behavior and hateful bigoted remarks. The moments of savage violence pack a fierce kick to the gut. Cinematographer Tyler King's ace use of a restless prowling camera provides a substantial jolt of crackling energy. Kevin MacLeod's discordant droning score does the jarring trick as well. A real nerve-shredding ordeal.
