Episodes like this....

Are the issue with this new genre. Whatever it's called, Fantasy Biopic? Fictional Biography? When the storyline covers well documented material, the story is great. However, when the storyline veers into the unknown it becomes conjecture and heresy, bordering on pure fantasy. Episodes like this are the ones that piss off the "characters ", or actual people, that are portrayed in it.

Continues to be entertaining

Warning: Spoilers
So much going on in the episode and Reilly continues to not disappoint. Lots of new ideas with Paula Abdul and Laker girls along with entertaining the bankers with partnering. Sad about bike accident but Adrian Brody seems to be a great Riley. Phil Knight and the Nike offer - I hope that was real!!! Sally Fields is awesome! McKay is brilliant with directing and costumes and sets are great.

Enjoyable in a perverse way as it's really sad how that whole "playboy" era and young athletes able to have anything exploiting women ... Hefner days ....

53,000 Times More

Warning: Spoilers
While not quite as jaw-droppingly sensational as earlier trips to the Fabulous Forum, this episode really has its moments.

We do discover that there is life after a bicycle crash for coach Jack McKinney (who later recovered to earn coach of the year honors with the Indiana Pacers).

We get to hear "Dear Mr Fantasy" by Traffic - but the finest moment was learning that Magic could have boosted his first shoe deal by 53,000% - that's $5.3 Billion (with a B!) - if he had a little more faith in Phil Knight of Nike.

John C Reilly continues to kill as Dr. Buss, though he doesn't quite as much screen time - and Kareem shows more mature leadership as captain of the yellow and purple ship.

Tanya Hamilton was an odd pick to direct this (and last) episode.

Man I was riding such a high after episodes 1-4 only to realize I had to wait another week to start watching again. I didn't know a show with this much potential could suffer to put not one but TWO filler episodes. At first, I couldn't figure it out. Why did episode 4 and 5 feel so dark and dull. How did we go from a wolf of Wall Street vibe to Selma? Don't get me wrong, I know it wasn't all peaches and sunshine for Magic coming into the league, being a freshman in the new money pool amongst the sharks of the old money pool. But Ms. Hamilton was trying to make a point. And it had neither to do with the Lakers or Basketball.

Paul steps in for Jack as head coach, and Magic becomes more of a star!

Episode 6 "Memento Mori" from "HBO's" "Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty" series was a drama filled episode that was filled with tense filled and turning like moments. With head coach Jack McKinney still on the mend and in recovery his picked assistant former college lit professor Paul Westhead(Jason Segel) takes over the role as head coach during the early part of the Lakers season. Also in this episode we see that star rookie Magic Johnson has become such a popular icon he signs an endorsement deal with a shoe company, and owner Jerry Buss is still getting advice and keeping the franchise afloat. Also seen are celebrities and famous Laker fans Jack Nicholson and Richard Pryor(both portrayed by actors) who make small cameo appearances. Overall another power like star filled episode which helped set up the series for a strong finish as I anxiously await the final 4 episodes.

Memento Mori

A literate episode. Then again assistant coach Paul Westhead is a former English teacher.

He is the Hamlet in this episode. Not quite ready to be the king after Jack McKinney's serious injuries.

It looks like Pat Riley is the man to wear the crown.

As for Magic Johnson, the world of trainers and corporate endorsements await him. As long as Larry Bird does not get there first.

If only he took that Nike deal. He would have been the king of the world.

This did feel a lot like a holding episode. The way they played around with McKinney' hospitalisation and opting instead for Jerry Buss's financial problems and other things made it look like a filler.

Filler Episode
krupocin-111 April 2022
I love basketball, and this show has a great cast, and despite McKay not being able to get out of his own way often the pacing and direction is at least energetic. All that being said, no episode of TV about the Showtime Lakers should feature more screen time of Magic eating p*ssy than actual basketball. That's not a joke nor an exaggeration, there was 0 min of ball the episode and a weird 2 min scene of Magic going down on a girl he was about to break up with. I am not prude if this was a brothel scene in GoT sure why not but it makes you wonder who are they making this show for?! Anyone whose watching it is here for the basketball or the culture not for another Magic relationship heavy episode. Ugh, such potential wasted time and time again. Magic's personal life is by far the least interesting part of this story and gets the most screen time. Hopefully that changes in the final 4 eps but I'm sadly not hopeful at this point.

Too Cute! Did they stop Thompson?!?
edichow12 April 2022
Jeesh, is this a basketball show or what? It's not Dynasty folks or Dances with Wolves. Have a basic amount of bball action please!!!

Did Westhead stop Thompson with Cooper? Is Richard Pryor a coke head?
