Facing the Fire

I agree with those who are praising Michelle Pfeiffer's portrayal of Betty Ford. Here she plays the breast cancer victim. I remember when this became news. Probably one of the most significant impacts on America, courage and spunk. She also shows the woman's continuing battle with alcoholism and substance abuse. Eleanor continues to battle the fact that she is rather homely and has little power unless among other women. The Michelle Obama portrayal is the least interesting, although we learn about her efforts to bring nutrition to the schools.

A showcase episode of strong first ladies standing up and dealing with pain.

Episode 5 of season one of "Showtime's" "The First Lady" anthology called "See Saw" was one episode in which each first lady stood up against the grain and went thru pain and doubt. Again shown thru flashback and fast forward thru different generations all three first ladies Eleanor, Betty, and Michelle stand up for good causes. Eleanor makes the white house press room filled all with female reporters a first at the time, and plus on the side she's attracted to a news lady in one Lorena Hickock. Betty has doubt and feels uneasy over her husband president Ford's pardon of ex president Richard Nixon only more drama is around the corner, yet Betty(strong wonderful work from Michelle Pfeiffer) becomes a hero as a breast cancer survivor. And Michelle(in a fine turn from Viola) stands up and wins a fight putting a healthy new school lunch menu in schools. Overall fine and wonderful episode showing tough and get it done like first ladies the performance from Davis and Pfeiffer stood out give both Viola and Michelle plenty of awards nominations they both deserve it.

Pfeiffer continues to own this series. Her take on Betty Ford is both heart-breaking and courageous. The subtle nuances and humanity she delivers are captivating. Interest in the life of Betty Ford will undoubtedly skyrocket, and Pfeiffer's delivery will no doubt play a huge part in it.
