After altering his voice to play the king of rock and roll in "Elvis," Austin Butler made a dramatic shift by portraying the heartless Harkonnen warrior Feyd-Rautha in "Dune: Part Two." It's a choice that worked out well, as even though the star's latest performance also came with an on-screen voice that demands further examination, Butler proved he was just as adept at playing cruel and cunning as he was at transforming into iconic musical figures of the 20th century.
The nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Feyd-Rautha was a big part of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel on which the "Dune" films are based. In the book, protagonist Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet in the modern films) returns to the capital of Arrakis and faces off against Feyd-Rautha in a final battle — one which was brought to life for the big screen by director Denis Villeneuve and his production team for "Dune: Part Two.

“The Watchers” is nearly here.
Based on the novel of the same name by A. M. Shine and written and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, the horror-thriller has just debuted a skin-crawling trailer, which you can watch above.
In “The Watchers,” Dakota Fanning plays a young woman who gets lost in the woods with her pet parrot. Soon, she starts hearing menacing noises and is ushered into a bunker by a kindly older woman (Olwen Fouéré). There, she meets two more people (Georgina Campbell and Oliver Finnegan), who tell her that they are being watched by otherworldly beings just outside the bunker walls. Is there any way to get out alive?
TheWrap spoke to Shyamalan about “The Watchers,” which is her feature debut after serving as a writer, director and producer on “Servant” and a second unit director on “Old” and “Knock at the Cabin” — all projects from her father,...

The trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s new thriller Trap has arrived, giving a glimpse into Josh Hartnett’s performance as an unexpected serial killer. Watch the full clip below.
In Trap, Harnett plays a father who takes his teen daughter to a concert performed by pop star Lady Raven. The film interweaves the story with Lady Raven’s performance, taking place in near-real time.
Beginning as a wholesome family experience, the trailer drastically shifts in tone when Hartnett’s character discovers the police have set up a trap (get it?) at the concert to capture a notorious serial killer called The Butcher. Seemingly giving away the film’s big twist, Harnett is revealed to be The Butcher.
Written and directed by Shyamalan, Trap also stars Ariel Donoghue, Hayley Mills, and Allison Pill. It’s set to arrive in theaters on August 9th.

A couple months ago, we learned that The Devil’s Bath – the latest genre movie from Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the directing duo behind the disturbing horror films Goodnight Mommy (the original, not the Naomi Watts remake) and The Lodge – had been acquired by Shudder, with the streaming service planning to release it in North America, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand sometime this summer. Now we know the exact release date. The Devil’s Bath will be available to stream on Shudder as of June 28th.
The Devil’s Bath – which has been described as “utterly harrowing”, “chilling”, and “impactful” – is a German-language film that is set in 1750 Austria, at a time when villages were surrounded by deep forests. There, a deeply religious woman has married her beloved, but her mind and heart soon grow heavy as her life becomes a long list of chores and expectations. Day after day,...

Josh Hartnett stars in M Night Shyamalan’s latest film – the serial killer, Trap. Watch the new trailer here:
Having popped up in Black Mirror and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, we’re getting plenty of Josh Hartnett on our screens. My teenage self is very happy.
The actor will next be seen in M Night Shyamalan’s latest film, Trap. Details on the film have been scarce, but we do know it centres on a serial killer attending a concert.
Well, there’s a Trap trailer now. Here it is:
Hartnett plays a serial killer who takes his teenage daughter to see Lady Raven in concert, only to find out the police are unto him and the whole thing is an elaborate plan to catch him.
The film looks like a straightforward cat-and-mouse thriller as Hartnett tries to outsmart the officers who have him seemingly surrounded. That being said, this...

Guess who's back ... back again? With no disrespect intended towards Slim Shady, he's got nothing on the run that M. Night Shyamalan is currently on. The horror-focused writer/director might remain as divisive as ever, but he's all but put to rest any doubts about whether he still has the juice or not (as the kids say). After wrapping up his "Eastrail 177" trilogy -- that's "Unbreakable," "Split," and "Glass" for the uninitiated -- and getting the franchise fever out of his system, Shyamalan has focused almost exclusively on bold adaptations like "Old" and "Knock at the Cabin." Meanwhile, on the television side of things, he brought the Apple TV+ series "Servant" to an unsettling end and has even found time to watch his daughter Ishana Night Shyamalan get ready to make her feature directing debut with the upcoming "The Watchers."
Now, in what's shaping up to be a fun box...

A group of people stuck in an isolated location being terrorized by enigmatic and very possibly supernatural forces residing just outside the barriers of their refuge, all of which feels more like a waking dream than events taking place in the real world? "The Watchers" is a Shyamalan joint alright, just not the Shyamalan who gave us thrillers like "Signs," "The Village," and "Knock at the Cabin." This intriguing big-screen take on A. M. Shine's novel of the same name instead comes from writer and director Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of M. Night and a first-time feature filmmaker looking to mark a splash after helming multiple episodes of the acclaimed Apple TV+ series "Servant" (which M. Night also worked on as a producer and director) and doing second unit work on some of her pop's pictures since his return to low-budget thrillers around a decade ago, starting with "The Visit.

It is fair to say that the line between sports and films is often blurred in Tinseltown. While athletes dabble in acting, actors often try their hand at sports. As an illustration, consider Conor McGregor, the Irish mixed martial arts fighter who just made his acting debut in the latest flick, Road House, helmed by Doug Liman.
His performance received high praise from moviegoers and critics alike, with some even suggesting he could be the next “Arnold Schwarzenegger”. Regardless, he may have stolen the show in the Jake Gyllenhaal starrer film, but he is far from ready to dethrone Dave Bautista. Not to be overlooked is the fact that the latter has an equally impressive acting resumé.

The daughter of an iconic horror filmmaker making a thriller about a father sacrificing himself? Just don’t call it meta.
Caitlin Cronenberg’s directorial feature debut “Humane” is a family thriller starring Peter Gallagher as a patriarch whose suicide plan goes haywire, leaving his children (Jay Baruchel and Emily Hampshire) to fight for their own survival. Cronenberg is the daughter of body horror auteur David Cronenberg; her brother Brandon Cronenberg helmed “Possessor” and buzzy thriller “Infinity Pool.”
“Humane” takes place over the course of a single day, set months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population, per the official synopsis. In a wealthy enclave, a recently retired newsman has invited his grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation’s new euthanasia program. One more video recap to enjoy as a last look back at the movies of 2023. Vietnamese film critic Nguyên Lê has revealed his Cinema Montage 2023 video, featuring a look at his Top 25 Best Films from last year (+ 2 extras). Oppenheimer won the Academy Award for Best Picture a few weeks ago, ending the 2023 awards season. Though that doesn't mean we can't still continue to celebrate all the great movies from last year. His video features many of my personal 2023 favorites as well, including: A Thousand and One, American Fiction, Godzilla: Minus One, Past Lives, Perfect Days, The Promised Land, and The Taste of Things. Plus other underrated gems like Polite Society, Sleep, Monster, Knock at the Cabin, Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, and Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. The video comes in under 3 minutes and is a wonderfully short and sweet reminder of all the beauty cinema offers us every year.

John Cena certainly isn't the first wrestler to become a movie star. Hulk Hogan, Jesse Ventura, and Andre the Giant brought their muscles to the big screen decades ago. The late '90s and early 2000s saw Bill Goldberg and Dwayne Johnson enter the fray, with the latter becoming one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, and he's still going strong. But it wouldn't be until the likes of Dave Bautista and John Cena that we'd get a pair of wrestlers who truly stepped into the world of acting without relying mostly on their muscular presence to do the heavy lifting on the big screen for them, both literally and figuratively.
Dave Bautista has proven to be a reliable supporting star in the superhero blockbuster franchise "Guardians of the Galaxy," but he's also delivered more haunting turns in the likes of "Blade Runner 2049," "Dune," and M. Night Shyamalan's "Knock at the Cabin.

Dave Bautista, like many before him, comes from the wrestlers turned actors fraternity. Yet for many of his fans, it is hard to him in that box. True that he used to be a wrestler but when it comes to his current profession, it is hard to believe he made such a huge drastic change seeing how natural and prolific of a performer he truly is.

Dave Bautista is opening up about leaving his Guardians of the Galaxy character Drax behind and how he’s hopeful to continue starring in the superhero genre.
The 55-year-old actor played the iconic character in the MCU for years and he went on to appear in movies like Army of the Dead, Glass Onion, Knock at the Cabin, and Dune.
Dave is confirming that he’s “done” with Drax, but not necessarily done with the MCU.
Keep reading to find out more…
“When I said that I was done, I was really just done with my journey as Drax,” he told Gizmodo in a new interview. “I still have a relationship with Marvel. I’ve seen Kevin Feige again, Lou [D’Esposito] as recently as two weeks ago. And they know that I would be up for a role. I love the universe — the superhero universe, I love it. I’m a fan.

What are The Watchers doing just on the other side of the window? They’re applauding.

We've come a long, long way since the mere mention of M. Night Shyamalan's name at the end of a trailer would elicit jeers from audiences at the movies. For those who haven't been living under a rock throughout the last decade, the once-infamous filmmaker has completely turned the narrative around thanks to betting on himself and winning big with a series of well-received box office hits in a row. This culminated with arguably his most ambitious and rather divisive effort yet in last year's "Knock at the Cabin," but those who've been following his work know that he's been killing it in multiple mediums now. The Apple TV+ series "Servant" only further proved that he's got plenty left in the tank, and now he's passing the torch to the next generation of Shyamalans.

Ishana Shyamalan is stepping up, taking the director’s chair from her dad, M. Night Shyamalan, for a new horror mystery flick called ‘The Watchers’. She’s not new to this game, having worked on ‘The Servant’ series and been an assistant director on movies like ‘Old’ and ‘Knock at the Cabin’. Now at 22, she’s ready to scare us with her own movie.
‘The Watchers’ is grabbing attention already, with New Line Cinema backing it and big names like Dakota Fanning starring. It’s based on a book by A.M. Shine, where a 28-year-old named Mina gets stuck in a creepy forest in Ireland with three others, and they’re all being watched by something eerie. Sounds like a mix of ‘Cabin In The Woods’ and ‘Lost’, right? You can check out the trailer below to get a taste of what’s coming.

The latest genre movie from Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the directing duo behind the disturbing horror films Goodnight Mommy and The Lodge, is The Devil’s Bath, which is set to have its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival this month. Before the movie’s festival screening, Variety reports that the Shudder streaming service has already picked up the rights to release The Devil’s Bath in North America, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand sometime this summer. Variety also reports that Franz and Fiala have signed on to direct the psychological horror movie A Head Full of Ghosts, which is based on a novel by Paul Tremblay (you can pick up a copy of the book Here). Another novel written by Tremblay was The Cabin at the End of the World, which M. Night Shyamalan turned into Knock at the Cabin.

Cinema operators might be wishing for their own atmospheric river storms right about now, at least figuratively speaking. Heading into the new year, long-range forecasts showed the box office facing a bad drought during the first two months of 2024, and they were unfortunately spot-on. The culprit? A sparse crop of new Hollywood studio titles as a result of production delays caused by last year’s strikes and a less-than-memorable class of year-end holiday holdovers to goose January’s bottom line.
Domestic box office revenue year-to-date of $581.2 million is running 43 percent behind the average haul during the same time period in 2016-19, when movie ticket sales clocked in as high as $1.08 billion, according to data provided by Comscore for Jan. 1-Feb. 4.

Not to sound like a broken record, but it was, once again, a pretty quiet weekend at the box office. Director Matthew Vaughn's "Argylle" topped the charts with a modest $18 million (which was sadly below industry projections) and, quite frankly, that isn't going to be enough to keep theaters afloat until the slate improves in March. But amid the unfortunate slowness of the weekend, a savior emerged in the form of Jesus. Yes, that very same Jesus. And it's not the first time he's come to the rescue in recent months.
The Chosen Inc. released the first three episodes of "The Chosen" season 4 in theaters over the weekend in partnership with Fathom Events. It paid off: The target audience indeed showed up for the cinematic, episodic look at the life of Jesus Christ, with the release pulling in just shy of $6 million over the weekend. I could ask whether or not the world needs another movie podcast but it might be a bad start posing questions to which we both know the answer. Still, Movie Mindset has elevated above the glut of background noise for host Will Menaker and Hesse Deni’s approach: amusing but not frivolous, personal appreciation that doesn’t risk lapsing into narcissism.
A year after our last chat about the current cinema, Menaker and I sat down for a discussion that took slightly different turns: having not seen a number of the year’s most-acclaimed title, he preferred running the gamut on 2023 at large. Which engendered something funnier and more caustic––you can’t love movies if you don’t also hate them.
As I turned on my recorder we were already underway.

2023 may have been a complicated year for the film industry, but it was a great year for movies. So, hey: No pressure, 2024.
As we sit here in the January doldrums, we can only look at the months and ahead and hope. Will those massively anticipated sequels live up to the hype? Will the latest releases from bona fide masters be worth the wait? Will everything that is supposed to come out this year actually come out this year? The anticipation is killing us.
This is far from a comprehensive list of every intriguing movie hitting theaters in 2024, but it does represent the titles that have the /Film team's attention already. Naturally, we expect dozens of incredible surprises to emerge from out of nowhere, especially as the film festival season starts to kick off. And since we're not psychics, we had to stick to the movies that we know are coming out this year,...

321 films are in contention for this year’s Academy Awards, while 265 features are eligible in the best picture category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday as it released its annual “reminder list” for members.
To be eligible in the general categories, films (meaning a runtime of more than 40 minutes) must open in a commercial theater in at least one of the following areas: Los Angeles County; the city of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia, between Jan. 1, 2023 and Dec. 31, 2023. Additionally, it must complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue.
To be eligible for the best picture category specifically, the movies must be eligible for the general entry and have “submitted a confidential Academy Representation and Inclusion Standards entry form.” Additionally, the film must meet two of the four standards required, in addition to the theatrical component.

Happy New Year! This week’s film quiz features movies that, according to Rotten Tomatoes, absolutely everybody likes.
Film Quiz Fridays are here again! In weeks to come, we’ve got rounds themed around Jason Statham films, movie musicals, and the Oscars, as well as the usual random movie trivia. But today’s theme is inspired by films like Next Goal Wins – not the Taika Waititi football comedy (read Simon’s 3-star review here) but the 2014 documentary of the same name – which has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Older readers will remember we did a quiz on the 0% club last year, but this time, we’re swinging the other way.
As always, there are three rounds of film trivia in total, and this is all just for fun. Once you’ve completed all 30 questions, you’ll find a link to a separate post with the correct answers at the bottom of this post.

Searching for and listening to movie soundtrack music for the year is an active quest of curiosity, discovery, and collage. For those fatigued and pushing through the chilliest season, I hope this mix can provide both energy and warmth, as it did to me in making it.Trends in film music over the last decade are continuing strong in 2023, particularly in the ambition of independent auteurs using complex and unusual scoring. The foundation for this mix is Angela Schanelec's beautiful and aptly titled Music, which provides both diegetic and non-diegetic moments to guide us. Samples range from The Old Oak, in which classical choral choir meets Syrian guitar and words of hope that now hit harder than ever, to a mix of sentimental strings courtesy of the legendary Joe Hisaishi. Abstract experimental sounds by two completely different kinds of artists—Harmony Korine and Thomas Newman—are mixed with sliced...
