Adequate but no more

This Estonian production was interesting enough to watch over a period of 24 hours. Production values and acting were good, characterisation somewhat less so. Unfortunately, many of the attendees at the birthday party were caricatures of what they could have been with a little more thought.

I liked the format of the series, each episode of which which proceeds from interviews of the people present in the Manor when Otto Müller was shot and segues into the events of the preceeding day or days from their point of view.

There were the usual red herrings, of course, and one of them even had me thinking that the most unlikely person (who hadn't been at the dinner perty) might have done it. However, it was possible to narrow the murderer down to one of two people but I wasn't sure exactly which one it was.

The true murderer was revealed in the last episode, naturally, but the manner of the dénouement was rather contrived. The contortions and false paths taken to deflect the investigation were so complicated that I didn't feel bad at not having worked out how it had all been done and by which of the two I'd narrowed it down to.

A definite recommend.

This is firstvtime I ever watch something from Estonia. I thought they speak russian or slavic couse was in Ussr but they are like Scandinavians.

99%people in Estonia have blue eyes This is like Agata Kristi, and remind ms me on movie,,Knives out,, Story is good, actors are good(ehcept lead actress, detective,)and Oto dont look like rich man ,he have face like homeless.

Robert is so pretty, aristocratic, and Monika is so funny.

I have enjoy.

If you like Agatha Christie style murder mysteries you like ths one too :)

It is about relationships between people more than anything else. Interesting characters who all have their own ways do deal with things. And I liked the end - the way the story played out. Viewer can see the murder day and evening through everyones eyes. So you get different perspectives, you see how people see and remember or want to show things. So there are things that do not match exactly and make you wonder who tells the truth. And even detectives are not 100% perfect ones - they have their own secrets and flaws. So - if you like slow suspense and like to dive in to mystery then it is good series to enjoy.

An ok series

Warning: Spoilers
There haven't been a lot of great crime shows in Estonia. For instance "The Revenge Office" used to be fantastic, but the last few seasons of that show have been rather rough to get through. "Who Shot Otto Mueller" is based on a book by Birk Roheland and the script of the series is also written by her. I found this season to be ok, but it could have been a lot better.

Let's start with the good.

. The production values of this season are great. The series is very-well directed, the music fits the scenery. The acting's very good for the most part. Jaan Rekkor, Märt Avandi, Evelin Võigemast are always great. Theodor Tabor, Doris Tislar and Karmel Naudre come off solid, but Tiina Tauraite, Liina Tennosaar and especially Mait Malmsten are fantastic.

. The story is at times very compelling. The character work is colorful, there are multiple red herrings. Did like that everyone had a motive.

But...

. After the first few episodes, the series loses quite a bit of steam. The structure of the episodes is a monotonous circle of suspects coming to the station, giving their statements, the investigators taking a pause and examining of what they have on the case. It wears the viewer out rather quickly, it would have been nice to get out of the station for once in a while.

I agree with reviews that have mentioned: the fact that the detectives have ties to the victim don't lead to much. At the end of the day I just did not care about the relationship of the police officers.

The big elephant in the room is the solution of the crime. I agree that the explanation's rushed and convoluted. The identity of the killer raises a question of how deeply the detectives looked into the lives of the suspects, because it's quite jarring how simple the motive is.

Overall, started off well, but ended on a silly note.

5/10 HK.
