Robert Pattinson's high-fashion work with Dior has really improved his grooming habits.
"I was a brush-your-teeth-and-have-a-shower kind of guy," the Twilight heartthrob admits to The Wall Street Journal of his routine prior to landing the Dior Homme Eau for Men campaign. "I can't tell if it's because of my association with Dior or because I'm older, but I've started moisturizing."

Remember a few years ago when M.I.A. was trying to drum up attention for her ultimately underwhelming third album? There was the New York Times profile, the outrageous fashion decisions, and, most notably, the "controversial" video for "Born Free," directed by Romain Gavras (son of director Costa-Gavras). In the clip, redheaded kids were being rounded up and forced to march through landmine-strewn patches of earth, which at the time was seen as some kind of reaction to the stringent anti-immigration laws in Arizona or American xenophobia or… something. But it turns out that the music video is actually part of a larger work Romain Gavras is constructing, which includes his striking, often brilliant debut feature "Our Day Will Come." Set in the same alternate reality where redheads are publicly derided and scorned, the film follows a teenager (Oliver Barthelemy, who looks thirty and is saddled with what is either one...

In the darkly comic satire Our Day Will Come, the great Vincent Cassel plays a red-haired psychologist who takes under his wing a bullied teen of similar hair-hue, played by Olivier Barthélémy, to help him develop some backbone. What ensues is a picaresque and extremely bizarre tale of drinking, nudity, violence, carjacking, jacuzzi-despoiling, impetuous hair removal, and general insanity as our two protagonists embark on an incident-packed quest to reach the spiritual home of the red-haired: Ireland.

M.I.A. has come out flipping swinging. The British singer is hitting back hard at the NFL's lawsuit seeking damages against her for M.I.A.'s notorious one-finger salute during Madonna's Halftime Show at last year's Super Bowl Xlvi, calling the brouhaha "completely ridiculous" and asserting that cheerleaders dancing in the production were actually more offensive. M.I.A. released a video to YouTube accusing the league of "massive corporation d--- shaking," for demanding $1.5 million from the "Born Free" musician for flipping the bird, which the NFL claimed was in breach of her performance contract and dinged its purportedly wholesome reputation. Not so fast, according to...

When YouTube banned David Bowie's music video for "The Next Day," it seemed ironic, since the site is normally the best place to see once-banned videos. But YouTube says it's cool with Bowie now – that banning his racy, bloody, religious-themed video was a mistake. While the video has been reinstated, the flap reminds us of other music videos that were initially banned. Here are some of our favorites:
"Dead End Street" by the Kinks
In 1966, an early music video depicting the band members as top hat-wearing pallbearers was deemed tasteless by the BBC – even though the "corpse" jumped out of the coffin, apparently alive and well – resulting in the BBC's first pop video ban.

She may be "Born Free," but M.I.A.'s spawn is staying put in Brooklyn—at least for the foreseeable future. The British-born singer-songwriter and Super Bowl bird flipper is lashing out on Twitter at her ex-partner, Seagram's heir Benjamin Bronfman, after a New York family court reportedly barred her from taking their 4-year-old son Ikhyd, from Brooklyn back to her native England. "Ben you can't take my son away from me…Just because you have money doesn't mean you have the right," M.I.A. tweeted Wednesday, one of several that have since been deleted. As the Kaiser Chiefs once philosophised, “I predict a riot” and it’s a statement hip-hop’s most prolific tag-team decide to take very seriously in their newest video.
Jay-z and Kanye West, when they’re not batting away fake pregnancy rumours and romancing a Kardashian, can be found making some great music filled with interesting samples, strategic collaborations and commanding rap lyrics (ok, not all of Kanye’s are that great anymore but still). No Church In The Wild is the next cut from their collabo-album Watch The Throne after Otis (they destroyed cars) and N****s in Paris (they rotated and morphed and all that jazz) and features the upcoming singer Frank Ocean who came 2nd in the BBC Sound of 2012 poll. Current.
Romain Gavras is directing this one and if you know a little about his previous music video work, you’ll have an idea of what to expect.

Romain Gavras is a badass. Okay … now that that’s been covered I’ll try to sound a little more professional with this article. Gavras has made a name for himself by directing several videos over the years that typically depict visually assaulting imagery of teens and violence. While some may say that his videos take place in some post-apocalyptic future where teen violence is more rampant, you only have to look at the riots in such countries as France and Greece to see that the future may be here already. In M.I.A ‘s video for “Born Free,” red-headed young boys are herded up and killed by a military force. “Stress” by Justice shows young boys in a gang torment anyone who they come across. He worked again with M.I.A on “Bad Girls” showing a Middle Eastern underground gang that spends their days performing tricks in their cars in the middle of the desert.

Who needs The Avengers when we've got The Throne around to incite violent justice everywhere with No Church in the Wild's bassy thrum? The video kicks off with Kanye or a Kanye lookalike (maybe it's just the scarf?) slo-mo launching a Molotov cocktail at a riot squad, an invocation to much more slo-mo police-burning in the newest clip from Romain Gavras, who directed M.I.A.'s ultraviolent, banned-from-YouTube "Born Free" video. No Church is an uncomfortably realistic reenactment of uprisings that have, notably, been taking place constantly in Non-Music-Video Land, only set to that Frank Ocean–featuring, Great Gatsby trailer–scoring jam. It's all very Children of Men–slick, but not not confusing. Things become extra odd once Kanye starts vibing about infidelity, throwing cocaine on a female acquaintance's skin, and the availability of taxis at 5 a.m. And there's an elephant. Never forget that there is an elephant.

Director Romain Gavras is no stranger to helming provocative material, being the man behind M.I.A.'s redhead killing "Born Free" and the helmer of "Notre Jour Viendre" but he's upping the stakes for "No Church In The Wild," the latest single from the team up of Jay-z and Kanye West.
After soundtracking trailers for "Safe House" and "The Great Gatsby" you'd think this song already had a spot, but alas it hasn't, so the creative team has looked back over the events of the the year or so and decided to appropriate the revolutionary spirit and imagery that rose up in the Middle East, dawned on Occupy Wall Street and is currently being felt in the month long plus protests in Montreal to sell hip hop records for millionaire musicians. Hooray. There is something a bit galling and even a bit lazy about all of this, with Yeezy and Hova...

Kanye West and Jay-z's "No Church in the Wild" has already appeared in one buzzed-about clip, but now the Watch the Throne track has its very own visuals.
The rap duo released the video for the song on Tuesday. Romain Gavras, who directed the video for M.I.A.'s "Born Free" (which is similar in style to the video below), Justice's "Civilization" and a host of other electro-inflected tracks, helmed the visuals.
The video opens with a young man throwing a molotov cocktail at police. An urban battle ensues, with police viciously beating protestors. Eventually, the crowd sets a police car on fire and drives it through some officers. Then lasers appear!
The Occupy Wall St. parallels seem almost too obvious to mention, though they are of interest because Jay was caught in a public relations scandal when it became known that the "Occupy All Streets" t-shirts his clothing company were...

Gareth Huw Evans' new film pits an elite Jakarta police unit against an entire towerblock of baddies. It's fast, violent and daring, like the best of the genre
If there's one word used to describe Asian cinema, it's usually "extreme". From South Korea we've had the hammer-wielding antics of Oldboy, whose star ate a live baby octopus, while from Japan we've had Takashi Miike's Ichi The Killer, in which a severed face hits a wall and slides down it – in one of the film's lighter moments. From Hong Kong comes pretty much anything with Jackie Chan in it, a martial artist who proudly boasts of having broken every bone in his 5ft 8" body. And now from Indonesia comes The Raid, an action extravaganza teeming with machete-twirling, gravity-defying psychos who slice, smash and crush anything that dares cross their path.

Since he moved to Jakarta four years ago, Evans, a softly-spoken scion of the Brecon Beacons, has resurrected the Indo martial-arts film. His latest, a careening piece of John Woo-esque ultraviolence called The Raid, is winning the country some overdue global exposure, thanks to its Sony Pictures Classic deal. The day after Madonna performed at the Super Bowl's halftime show, much of the conversation concerns a single wayward digit.
When M.I.A. flipped the bird to the 150 million or so people watching the game, she ignited a Twitter and media frenzy. NBC and the NFL have been trading barbs all morning about the incident, with NFL blaming the network's delay system for failing to censor the gesture and NBC blaming the NFL for hiring M.I.A. and producing the show. It should come as no surprise that the Parents Television Council is also irate (because kids have never seen a middle finger before!).
Meanwhile, no one's talking about Nicki Minaj, who performed with M.I.A. and Madonna on the latter's new single, "Give Me All Your Luvin'." And it's not because Minaj is averse to attracting attention via controversy. From her always wacky outfits to her rapping style (half aggressive, half cupcake...

M.I.A.'s middle finger may currently be the most-discussed digit in America, dominating the post-Super Bowl chatter and earning swift rebukes from NBC and the NFL. But for those who've covered her career from the beginning, well, let's just say this is basically par for the course.
Because ever since M.I.A. first broke through in 2004, she's courted controversy, first for her outspoken support of the Tamil Tigers, the Sri Lankan separatist organization that engaged in acts of terror and has been linked to the assassination of Sri Lankan and Indian leaders. That support and her overtly political lyrics led to her being denied a travel visa by the U.S. government and earned...

This has been a good week for rapper-singer-provocateur M.I.A.. The Sri Lankan-British artist is featured alongside Nicki Minaj in Madonna’s new Super Bowl-themed video “Give Me All Your Luvin’.” And she just dropped a video for her new video “Bad Girls.” “Bad Girls” was shot in Ouarzazate, Morocco, and was directed by Romain Gavras (who also shot her “Born Free” clip). Is the new video a comment on Saudi Arabia’s anti-female driving laws? Or is it just M.I.A. getting her gangsta on?...

M.I.A. is back! And she's going mainstream! Set to appear alongside Madonna and Nicki Minaj at the Super Bowl this weekend, that performance will certainly be one of the more bizarre to ever grace the already dodgy history of halftime shows, and in a perfectly calibrated marketing move, the former revolution chanting hip hop artist has dropped her new single "Bad Girls." It seems Maya Arulpragasam has given up on the political rhetoric that thrust her into the spotlight (her last mixtape was called Vicki Leekz...get it!?) and gone into party jam mode instead. It sells more records anyway. With Rihanna causing a stir in the music world with her controversial outfits and racy music videos, it comes as no surprise that her most recent hit "We Found Love" has been banned from being played in France before 10Pm. But she's not the only mainstream artist to have her video banned from television. We spent some time looking through some of other videos that have been banned over the years and came up with a list of our five favorites.
Just make sure you don’t get caught watching these videos on your work computer. They got banned for a reason, after all!

What list would be complete without resident badass chick Lady Gaga? Lady Gaga has made her fame off of being weird and raising a lot of eyebrows with her fashion and compelling videos. The video for "Alejandro" is no different.

Violence, action, fast cars, hordes of redheads, air horns, nudity, and that’s just the trailer. Vincent Cassel is one of my favorite working actors, and after watching this fresh trailer for French director Roman Gavras‘s Our Day Will Come, I don’t think that’s going to change any time soon. This movie looks intense.
American audiences will recognize Cassel from Black Swan. Gavras is best known stateside for directing the epic 9-minute music video for M.I.A.‘s “Born Free“, which got a lot of attention last year for its graphic depictions of violence and sex in a police state.
Our Day Will Come stars Cassel and Olivier Barthelemy, who previously worked together on the excellent Mesrine: Public Enemy #1 and the 2006 horror film, Sheitan. A synopsis and the trailer below [via First Showing]:

Our Day Will Come is released on Blu-ray from Monday 22nd August and we have three copies of the Blu-ray to give away to our readers. Read on to find out how;
The directorial debut of Romain Gavras, best known for his controversial Music videos for M.I.A (Born Free) and Justice (Stress), Our Day Will Come is a bold and savagely humorous outsider epic, telling the story of Patrick (Vincent Cassel) and Remy (Olivier Barthelemy) a pair of outcasts joined together by their dislike of society and their own red hair.
Patrick is a charismatic but cynical therapist, long bored with listening to the banalities of his clients’ problems, he is desperate for any situation he can manipulate for his own amusement. A defining opportunity comes in the form of Remy, an awkward, alienated teenager, bullied by his family and ostracized by his peers who use his red hair as prime ammunition for their taunts.

Ealing Studios Bicycle Tours
Among the many splendid things about Ealing comedies is the way they got outside and took in postwar London, so what better way to celebrate the Ealing spirit than hauling yourself on to a bike and doing the same? Coinciding with the Southbank's Vintage festival (see Events preview, p39), these guided tours (vintage bikes provided, vintage garb encouraged) visit the key locations of three Ealing classics – The Lavender Hill Mob, Hue & Cry and Passport To Pimlico – of which a surprising amount survives, from landmarks like the Bank of England and Westminster Bridge to south London back streets. And after a bracing pedal, you can round off your tour with a screening of the restored Lavender Hill Mob (starring Alec Guinness and Stanley Holloway) at the BFI Southbank.

Too highbrow for the multiplex and all those vulgar feature films?...
Among the many splendid things about Ealing comedies is the way they got outside and took in postwar London, so what better way to celebrate the Ealing spirit than hauling yourself on to a bike and doing the same? [This is a reprint of a review published at BlogCritics.org]Director Romain Gavras (most known internationally for his controversial video for the M.I.A. song "Born Free") brings his gritty sensibilities to feature filmmaking with Our Day Will Come, a surprisingly entertaining, if uneven and often aimless, dark drama/comedy starring the great Vincent Cassel. After assaulting his mother and running away, the alienated, frightened and introvert Remy (Oliver Barthelemy) meets up with the outspoken, violent and racist Patrick (Vincent Cassel) and together the two go on a wild and nihilistic road trip, with Remy's ultimate goal being to cross over from France to Ireland on a ferry to be with other red-headed people like himself. That last part should give you some insight, however slight, into the dark humour of Our Day Will...

Director Roman Gavras, best known for his work on gritty music videos (M.I.A.'s "Born Free" which was banned on several sites for it's violent content), has crafted a truly mad first feature about a bullied, obnoxious and extremely alienated young man called Remy (Olivier Bartelemy), who befriends a charismatic, psychotic psychiatrist played with courage by Vincent Cassel. The key linking them is that they both have red hair, and for years have felt victimised by society because of it. I wasn't aware that redheads got such abuse, but then again I live in Scotland. I would defy anyone to tell what this film is really about, it's so completely chaotic and stuffed with ideas and set-pieces that it's very difficult to know how to take it all in, but one thing is certain,...

Those Decemberists were such big teases last week when they gave us a 15 second preview of their new video. Well those teases are finally putting out and they just debuted the full video for "This Is Why We Fight". The video is dark and the imagery of children at war manages to be reminiscent of both "The Lord of the Flies" and a mostly violence-free version of M.I.A.'s "Born Free". Check out the video below and then go buy "The King is Dead":

Filmmaker Romain Gavras (son of legendary political filmmaker Costa-Gavras) hopped up on the stage of the Ritz theater to introduce his debut feature 'Our Day Will Come,' and informed us that his movie is "a romantic comedy that goes nowhere and means nothing." Fortunately for the audience, Gavras was lying. He may not know exactly what it is that his demented, unpredictable, and palpably furious film taps into, but he knows full well that he's touched a nerve of some kind. He's touched it before, after all, and he's perfectly aware of just how much it hurt.
Gavras' visual accompaniment to M.I.A.'s "Born Free" was less a music video than it was a full-fledged short film, a violent 9-minute narrative in which all the redheads of a dusty dystopian city were rounded up and brutally murdered in a style so sadistic...

Romain Gavras--son of celebrated filmmaker Costa-Gavras--has followed in his father's footsteps and has quickly made an impressive stamp. Last year, he helmed the controversial video for M.I.A.'s "Born Free" and made his directorial debut with his equally disturbing "Our Day Will Come." He's returned, this time with something a lot more mainstream, but still displaying his signature style. Gavras has taken the reigns on a new spot for Adidas that features a bevy of celeb cameos/appearances including Katy Perry, Lionel Messi, David Beckham, BoB and more. Oh yeah, that thumping soundtrack? It's the track "Civilization" by French outfit Justice who…...

Though it started as a very insider thing, The Black List has recently become more popular and mainstream. For those who may not know, it's an annual list of the year's best unproduced screenplays as voted on by about 300 Hollywood development executives and high-level assistants. We recently posted the 2010 list [1] and looking back at some previous years (2007 [2], 2008 [3], 2009 [4]), films such as Recount, The Beaver and The Social Network all sat near the top of the list. Skim over any of them and you'll see names of films that are out, are coming out and more. It's a big deal. This year, a new Black List of sorts has come out. Dubbed Viewfinder, it's supposed to do for directors what The Black List did for screenwriters. Viewfinder is a compilation of "the top commercials, shorts and/or music videos of 2010." Several of the directors on the list already have deals or are in production on films.

With 2010 coming to a close, M.I.A. has already announced her plans for the new year: Flood the Web with some new music. On Friday (December 3), the electro-dance superstar tweeted that she's going to drop a mixtape on December 31.
"Vicky leekx mixtape coming new years eve!" she wrote. The indie-music luminary didn't elaborate on the sound of the project but added that she plans to churn out a suite of tracks that will make an impact. "Layin bad minds to rest 2010!"
The "Born Free" artist has been trekking across Europe on tour and is slated to be on the road until December 12, according to her MySpace page. But it appears she was able to squeeze in some studio time while ripping stages overseas. And although her politically charged lyricism and genre-smashing beats have captivated her fans,...

Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs"
Photo: Merge records
Back in April, a rep for Spike Jonze told MTV News that the director had traveled to Austin, Texas, to shoot "a short film, which is a collaboration with Arcade Fire." Aside from a few stray details — Jonze was apparently casting "late-teen actors" for the project, which was said to be about "friends growing apart" — little else was known about the film. In the following months, no new information emerged about it, which meant that by the time the band released their sweeping album The Suburbs, pretty much everyone had forgotten about the Jonze film. Or at least figured it would never see the light of day.
Seven months later, all of that changed. On Thursday (November 18), with a single tweet, the Arcade Fire unveiled the video, a stirring,...

New York — M.I.A. returned to Terminal 5 on Monday night and brought with her all the trappings one would expect from an M.I.A. show: thunderous bangers, fierce jerk dancers and, of course, her signature "statement" apparel.
Rye Rye, the first artist signed to M.I.A.'s N.E.E.T recordings, started the night off flanked by b-boys. One can't help but be intrigued with the fact that such bars are being spit by a girl attending high school in Baltimore, not to mention someone that can dance as ferociously as she does.

M.I.A. has once again chosen to go viral to promote another track from her latest album "/\/\/\Y/\". This time around, the Sri Lankan-born artist debuts visual accompaniment for "Story to Be Told". Despite the song's title, the clip doesn't have any story to be told. It mostly features chunk of the lyrics in "Captcha" letters which keep zooming in and out as the track progresses.
The viral promotion has been hinted when M.I.A. used YouTube screenshots to promote the album. Prior to that, she stirred controversy with a bloody viral video for a buzz song "Born Free" which was inspired by her Third War upbringing in Sri Lanka. Coming on the heels of his Born Free the M.I.A video, Romain Gavras continues his whaling on the gingers, or as he refers to them: the "inferior" race. Notre jour viendra premiered at Tiff one week ago, and it's a difficult pic to sum up. The narrative is messed up and works with it's own set of rules. Last sunday was the world preem -- among the giddy audience there were some actors spilling over from Little White Lies and M.I.A and Midnight Madness curator Colin Geddes was there to present Gavras, Olivier Barthelemy and Vincent Cassel - who from the responses from the after screening Q&A not only sounds like a pro, but you get a sense that he supports these type of unclassifiable films. Can't wait to commence my review of the film -- certainly nowhere close to being a favorite, but a film that managed that...

"You can tell how people feel about French filmmaker Romain Gavras in an instant," writes David Fear, introducing his interview with the director. "Just mention the music videos he did for the techno group Justice or the recent M.I.A. song 'Born Free' (that'd be the one in which redheads are rounded up and summarily executed). Most people will either passionately proclaim he's one of the boldest, most brilliant young directors working in that form today, or go into an apoplectic rage, screaming that he's a provocateur who likes to push viewers' buttons. His directorial debut, Our Day Will Come, created a similar reaction among moviegoers at this year's Toronto Film Festival; walking out of the film's Sunday night premiere, you could hear people declaring that Gavras (the son of filmmaker Costa-Gavras) was a genius and that he deserved to get punched in the face."...

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards are right around the corner — and by "corner," I mean Sunday at 9 p.m. Et/Pt. This is great news for pretty much everyone, particularly Lady Gaga fans and those with an unquenchable thirst for the art of wagering (or, as some people call it, "a dangerous and destructive gambling addiction").
See, the VMAs are arguably the greatest gambling event of the year, although winners are voted on by fans, which makes predicting the show's outcome nearly impossible. Still, none of that has stopped me from making my Vma predictions for two straight years now, with varying degrees of success. What can I say? I like to live dangerously. So I've decided to throw on the old prognostication...

On Monday (August 30), Kid Rock announced that his upcoming album will be called Born Free, and that it will be hitting stores on November 16. In keeping with the decidedly blue-collar path he cut with his 2007 comeback disc Rock N Roll Jesus, Kid won't be rapping on the new album (so says an accompanying press release), instead drawing inspiration from "American classic rock." Bob Seger, Sheryl Crow, Zac Brown and Trace Adkins are all confirmed to appear on the album, not to mention T.I. and Martina McBride, who — in a decidedly Wtf twist — both appear on a track called "Care."
The first single off Born Free is, appropriately enough, the title track, which hits radio on September 14. While we're totally pumped to hear it (our flags are already unfurled), we'd be remiss if we didn't point out the fact that M.I.A. already released a song called "Born Free" earlier this year,...

There's no way you're going to be able to confuse Kid Rock's upcoming album Born Free with twitch-pop bomb-thrower M.I.A.'s song of the same name.
First of all, Rock's eighth studio album, due November 16, was produced by legendary knobmeister Rick Rubin. Second, even though Rock, like M.I.A., will release a song called "Born Free" as his first single, the Detroit bad boy's tune focuses not on world affairs, but on the economic decline of his hometown, Detroit.
A press release announcing the album calls Born Free "transformational," going on to note that while Rock retains his "edge, wit, and swagger" on the record, he has left his rap-metal roots behind. "There isn't even a parental warning sticker," the release says.
Rock described how D-town inspired the Americana feel of some tracks.

After sparking controversy with a bloody violent music video of "Born Free", M.I.A. now shows off her softer side in a music video for single "Xxxo". Putting on make-up, including applying thick red lipstick, the Sri Lankan-born artist goes glam as a cover model of a digital greeting card with glittery graphic of hearts and flowers on its frame.
The iconic YouTube screenshots which are used to promote "/\/\/\Y/\", the new album where "Xxxo" appears, are also featured in it. Apparently, M.I.A. is still capable of doing something besides trashing other celebrities. The "Paper Planes" singer has released a new video for "Xxxo," from her recently released third album, Maya.
