A Crook of the Arm and a Tip of the Hat
boblipton8 January 2011
In 1901 Mold was accused of throwing, rather than bowling the cricket ball and this was enormously interesting to the English -- more so than the game is to me. Attendance for the remainder of the game was up severely.

The films made around the event include this Mitchell & Kenyon film and for me, the interesting part is their view of the real world and its interaction with the camera. The subjects acknowledge the camera, some looking at it out of the corners of their eyes, some posing as for a portrait and one gentleman tipping his hat to the camera -- and to the audience.

Was Mold throwing rather than bowling? The umpires thought he was and the movies indicate that he did bend his elbow, rather than use a standard straight-armed pitch. However, the audience at the event is of greater interest to me.
