Exclusive: Michaela Coel is no longer developing a series with links to her smash BBC/HBO hit I May Destroy You.
Three years ago, then-BBC drama director Piers Wenger revealed that Coel was working on a show that had links to the I May Destroy You universe. “It’s at relatively early stages, but I wanted to let the fans of I May Destroy You know that there is a new show coming along,” Wenger said at the time.
But speaking to Deadline last week, I May Destroy You EP Phil Clarke said Coel had toyed with various ideas for what was loosely termed “I May Destroy You 2,” before deciding against going further. Coel has previously ruled out a second series of I May Destroy You in the traditional sense.
“When Piers went public, we were all talking about it,” said Clarke. “Those were Michaela’s thoughts as well.

Laurence Olivier was an Oscar-winning thespian best remembered for his psychologically intense Shakespeare adaptations, both as an actor and a director. Yet his filmography extends well past the Bard’s work. Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1907 in Surrey, England, Olivier first came to prominence on the British stage. A series of acclaimed theatrical performances, most notably in Noel Coward‘s “Private Lives,” caught the attention of filmmakers both in the UK and the US.
He earned his first Oscar nomination as Best Actor for William Wyler‘s “Wuthering Heights” (1939), competing the very next year for Alfred Hitchcock‘s “Rebecca” (1940). Having firmly established himself as a formidable talent in front of the camera, he stepped behind it to great success with “Henry V”, the first of three films he would direct and star in based on the works of William Shakespeare.

Getting a feature into Cannes’ official selection is among the pinnacles of filmmaking achievements for most production companies. Ireland’s Element Pictures clearly isn’t most production companies — this year, it has three.
According to co-founder Ed Guiney, who set up Element with Andrew Lowe in 2001, while his company’s triple-headed festival visit may be “wonderful”, it’s simply down to good fortune and timing. “You know, some years you have nothing for Cannes,” he says, speaking from Element’s breezy, white-walled Dublin headquarters, located above an outdoor clothing shop and a jeweler on the Irish capital’s busy O’Connell Street, where it also runs its distribution arm Volta Pictures and the programming for the popular arthouse Light House Cinema, which it has operated since 2012.

The spring sun blazed down on London’s Royal Festival Hall for the BAFTA TV Awards on Sunday and the conditions were right for Baby Reindeer to bask in its success.
Richard Gadd’s dazzling “true story” of his experience with an alleged stalker won’t be eligible for prizes until next year, but he attended the 2024 awards with co-star Jessica Gunning to hand out the prize for best Limited Drama.
Clerkenwell Films’ somewhat parochial British story has been the biggest show in the world for the past couple of weeks, and there can be little doubt about Gadd’s astonishing creative achievement in taking his trauma and rendering it into a brutal, beguiling work of art.
His BAFTA appearance should have been a moment of celebration for Baby Reindeer, but it was a strangely muted affair as the threat of a lawsuit from the real-life Martha (named as Fiona Harvey...

Awards season may well be over for another year in the world of film, with the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes just a distant memory now. But on Sunday evening, one of the biggest nights in British TV, the BAFTA TV Awards — this year hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Ramesh Ranganathan — took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall. And on a night where the two most nominated shows, Black Mirror and The Crown, failed to snag a single win, Happy Valley, Top Boy, and The Sixth Commandment enjoyed great success in key categories, each taking home two awards apiece.
On the night, Sarah Lancashire won Leading Actress for her all-timer of a turn as police sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley, her second BAFTA for the same role. The show also snagged the public-voted Memorable Moment award for Catherine and Tommy Lee Royce’s (James Norton) remarkable final kitchen showdown.

Netflix UK will not be changing its commissioning course when the streamer stops reporting quarterly subs numbers, according to its programing chief.
Anne Mensah, who oversees a huge slate featuring the likes of Baby Reindeer and The Gentlemen, said “there is no secret” for producers when they pitch to Netflix, and that this will remain the same given the streamer’s fresh focus on profit over subs.
“I can’t stress enough that [our commissioning strategy] is simply about how you get audiences to press play and stay,” she told the Creative Cities Convention in response to a question over Netflix’s decision to stop reporting quarterly subs numbers from next year.
“Before I arrived the idea was how to put in place a team that is authentically ‘of the UK’ and show you have absolute commitment to staying here long term,” she added. “For me the content remains utterly key.”

Shirley MacLaine is the Oscar-winning performer who has made dozens of movies in her 60-plus year career, but how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 20 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1934, MacLaine is the older sister of Warren Beatty, proving that acting talent must run in the family. She made her screen debut with Alfred Hitchcock‘s “The Trouble with Harry” (1955) when she was just 21 years old. Her first Oscar nomination came three years later: Best Actress for “Some Came Running” (1958).
MacLaine would compete four more times at the Oscars unsuccessfully: three for Best Actress, once for Best Documentary Feature (“The Other Half of the Sky: A China Memoir” in 1975). She finally struck gold with James L. Brooks‘ comedic drama “Terms of Endearment” (1983), playing a controlling mother who clashes with her free-spirited daughter (Debra Winger). BAFTA has confirmed the date for next year’s film awards ceremony, which will be held Sunday, February 16, 2025.
The date means the BAFTAs will come exactly two weeks before the 2025 Oscars, set for March 2.
Once again, the British awards will take place smack in the middle of the Berlin Film Festival, which runs Feb. 13-23, meaning many Brit executives will be booking flights back from the German capital on the first festival weekend.

The contender to watch this week: “Girls State”
In 2021, “Boys State” picked up recognitions from the National Board of Review, Directors Guild of America, Emmys, and several critics groups, so of course we’re getting a sequel. This time, directors Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss move from Texas to Missouri to profile teenagers attending the eponymous mock-government program. The ambitious, excitable girls are just as fascinating as their male counterparts, and you can see them in action on Apple TV+.
Other contenders:

Jodie Foster is having a good year. The two-time Oscar winner returned to the attention of the academy for the first time since 1995 with a nomination for “Nyad.” Now, she and showrunner Issa López have revamped HBO’s flagging “True Detective” with the best entry since the show’s first season.
“True Detective: Night Country” stars Foster as an acid-tongue, spiky police chief who is tasked with investigating the disappearance of eight men in the spooky, fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. Playing a detective will naturally harken viewers’ minds back to her turn as Clarice Starling in “The Silence of the Lambs,” the film for which she won her second Best Actress Oscar (“The Accused” being the other). It’s her meatiest role in years and Foster devours it.
Brian Tallerico (Roger Ebert) observed: “Our unsteady guiding hand through this darkness is Liz Danvers, played with icy perfection by Jodie Foster.

Heading into the 2024 Oscars, most of the above-the-line categories seemed locked in with “Oppenheimer” poised to take Best Picture, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.) and Best Director (Christopher Nolan). “The Holdovers” was guaranteed a win for Best Supporting Actress (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) and even the screenplay categories had clear front-runners in “Anatomy of a Fall” and “American Fiction.”
Best Actress was the only major race that held us in suspense to the end. After Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) won the Golden Globe (Comedy/Musical), Critics Choice and BAFTA, and Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) took home the Golden Globe (Drama) and SAG Award, the two seemed deadlocked for Oscar glory. However, most of the experts and Gold Derby users predicted Gladstone would prevail, citing her narrative of becoming the first Native American to win Best Actress would help propel her across the finish line.

David Seidler, best known for his Academy Award-winning writing on The King’s Speech, died on Saturday, March 16 while on a fly-fishing expedition in New Zealand. He was 86 and no cause was given.
“David was in the place he loved most in the world – New Zealand – doing what gave him the greatest peace which was fly-fishing. If given the chance, it is exactly as he would have scripted it,” said longtime manager Jeff Aghassi.
Seidler’s The King’s Speech went on to win Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. The film focused on the story of King George VI (Colin Firth) overcoming his severe stutter, and his unexpected friendship with speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) in the lead up to World War II.
The project, which he also intended as a stage play, was a labor of love for the screenwriter, who had a profound stutter as a child.

Now that awards season has come to an end and the dust has settled, it’s time to reflect on the past 10 or so months. There can only be a select group of actors who walk away with an Academy Award each year. For those who may be disappointed that Lily Gladstone failed to take home the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” fear not. While she may not have won the biggest prize, she still wound up winning awards season.
Gladstone, who has shared the fact they are nonbinary and uses both she/they pronouns, has clearly had a massive breakout year. Let us count the ways here:

Video games have been a part of the Baftas since 1998. In 2004, the Bafta Game Awards was launched as a standalone event to showcase the exceptional creativity and storytelling involved in the makings of video games. However, two decades later, the US counterpart of the Baftas, the Emmys, and the Oscars have failed to replicate the integration taking place in the UK with the video game industry firmly out of question at the prestigious awards.
How Are Video Games Different and Why Is It a Good Thing?
Even with the technological advancements and the numerous critically acclaimed masterpieces that have come out of the video game industry, this continued lack of recognition from the mainstream industry is dubious, if not altogether questionable from the Oscars. Games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Far Cry 3, Alan Wake 2, Witcher 3, and a host of others can give any established media like movies and TV shows a...

Oscars 2024: How closely did Golden Globes, BAFTAs, Critics Choice and SAG Awards match the academy?
With the 96th Oscars done and dusted, we can now reflect on lessons learned throughout the awards season. Specifically, which precursors most closely matched — and perhaps had the greatest influence on — the motion picture academy. Let’s look at the four top televised or streamed awards shows.

These awards, revamped with an expanded voting body after years of controversy involving the small and insular Hollywood Foreign Press Association, don’t have most of the craft categories that the Oscars have, so we’re mostly looking at above-the-line influence here. And since they have separate awards for musical/comedy films and drama films, they have extra chances to influence awards voters. All in all, these matched the Oscar winners almost perfectly. The late iconic legend Matthew Perry has given the cinema and worldwide audiences some of the most cherishable moments, both onscreen as well as offscreen — not just through Friends, but his other big screen masterpieces as well. But despite such excellence, he wasn’t honored at the recently held BAFTAs following his devastating demise.

Yet, while the BAFTAs are gone, another major awards ceremony will soon be reaching the audiences: The Oscar Awards 2024. And this time, the Academy has a chance to not only pay tribute to Perry for all the outstanding projects he has presented the entertainment industry with but also make one of his unfulfilled wishes come true.

Sunday night’s 96th Academy Awards signaled the end of a memorable Oscar season, inspiring Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery along with news and features editor Ray Richmond and Tariq Khan – prolific Gold Derby contributor and encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire – to slug it out one last time over Zoom and mourn the categories that got away in their forecast. But before grieving their misguided last-minute prediction switches, the men discussed what they liked about the ceremony itself. Watch their colorful and opinionated discussion above.
Dixon loved the banter interplay of presenter duos Arnold Schwarzenegger/Danny DeVito and Emily Blunt/Ryan Gosling. Montgomery found it a “pretty solid” show that peaked for him in Jonathan Glazer’s acceptance speech after winning international film for “The Zone of Interest.” Davidson applauded director Mstyslav Chernov’s powerful speech after winning in Best Documentary Feature for “20 Days in Mariupol.

Christopher Nolan is no stranger to winning critical acclaim, but his biopic based on the life of the troubled, unfaithful, Bhagavad Gita-spouting father of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, has earned him more awards more than any other movie he has ever done, including ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Inception’ and ‘Dunkirk’.
For starters, Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, after becoming the second highest-grossing R-rated film in Hollywood history after ‘Joker’, notched up 12 Oscar nominations, far more than the eight each of ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Inception’ and ‘Dunkirk’.
The blockbuster hit ended up with seven Oscars, far less than the 11 each of the Charlton Heston classic, ‘Ben Hur’, ‘Titanic’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’, and even the eight each of ‘Gandhi’ and ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.
But for Nolan, it must come as a big relief to have finally broken his Oscars jinx and going home with the Best Director trophy,...

“Oppenheimer” expectedly topped Sunday’s Oscars, but the biggest winner may have been BAFTA. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to break down the winners, losers, Ryan Gosling and more.
After going 0/8 above the line last year and making people doubt its reliability as a precursor, BAFTA not only went 8/8 this year but correctly forecasted all other categories too except visual effects — only because the BAFTAs and Oscars did not nominate each other’s winners. The tightest above-the-line category was Best Actress, which went to Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), who took home her second Oscar in the category. How did she edge out Screen Actors Guild Award champ Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”)?

Oppenheimer dominated the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday (March 10), winning seven Oscars, including best picture, after going into the ceremony with 13 nominations.
The epic biographical drama from British filmmaker Christopher Nolan, already winner of the Bafta and Producers Guild of America best film awards as well as the Golden Globe for drama feature, also brought Nolan (himself winner of the Bafta and Directors Guild of America directing awards) his first directing Oscar.
Oppenheimer delivered other statuettes to Nolan’s producing partners Emma Thomas and Charles Roven, Ireland’s Cillian Murphy as lead actor and Robert Downey Jr as supporting actor.

Andrea Bocelli performed a rendition of the song “Time to Say Goodbye” with his son Matteo Bocelli to accompany the Academy’s annual obituary section. Perhaps mindful of previous years, in which eagle-eyed viewers have jumped on omissions, this year’s “In Memoriam” — which began with footage of the recently deceased Russian opposition leader and subject of last year’s winning documentary Navalny — seemed comprehensive but at the same time not enough.

Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were the big Oscar craft winners March 10, each winning three awards. Christopher Nolan’s historical thriller about the atomic bomb grabbed cinematography, editing, and original score, while Yargos Lanthimos’ surreal “Frankenstein” gender-bender snagged costume design, production design, and makeup and hairstyling.
The rest went to “Godzilla Minus One” (visual effects), “The Zone of Interest” (sound), and “Barbie”. The lone “Barbie” win was a major disappointment for Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster, which was expected to also take costume design and/or production design for the inventive Mattel-inspired fashion and world-building.
The wins for “Godzilla Minus One” and “The Zone of Interest” were both upsets: Takashi Yamazaki’s Kaiju actioner bested Gareth Edwards’ AI-themed “The Creator,” which won the Ves prize, and Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama about the banality of evil (the international feature film Oscar winner) overtook “Oppenheimer,” which won the...

Da'Vine Joy Randolph won the first big award of the night at the Oscars, taking home a win in the Best Supporting Actress category for her work in "The Holdovers." Randolph beat out some impressive competition as she was up against Emily Blunt ("Oppenheimer''), Danielle Brooks ("The Color Purple"), America Ferrera ("Barbie"), and Jodie Foster ("Nyad"). And in doing so, she completed arguably the most impressive run of any actor this awards season.
In addition to the Oscar, Randolph won awards for her performance at the Critics Choice Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the BAFTAs, and the Golden Globes. It's not that an actor who goes on to win an Oscar doesn't win some other awards along the way, but pulling off a sweep like that is rare air, and it's undoubtedly impressive. Da’Vine Joy Randolph won the first Oscar of her career for “The Holdovers,” a 1970s-set dramedy about a trio that’s stuck at a New England prep school over the holidays.

“I didn’t think I was supposed to be doing this as a career,” Randolph said from the mic. “I thank my mother for doing that. I thank all the people who have been there for me, ushered me and guided me.”

“Oppenheimer” is the most nominated film at this year’s Oscars with 13 nominations. That’s one shy of the all-time record of 14 nominations so it missed out on Oscars history in the nomination phase.
However, Universal’s movie could match Academy Awards history in the awards phase by equalling the record of 11 Oscar wins overall. So far, three films have won 11 Academy Awards. They were “Ben-Hur” in 1960, “Titanic” in 1998, and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Here’s the breakdown of what awards they won.
“Ben-Hur”
Best Picture — Sam Zimbalist Best Director — William Wyler Best Actor — Charlton Heston Best Supporting Actor — Hugh Griffith Best Film Editing Best Cinematography (Color) Best Music (Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture) Best Costume Design (Color) Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (Color) Best Sound Recording Best Visual Effects

Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. enthralled the audiences with their performances as J. Robert Oppenheimer and Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster Oppenheimer. Besides having a worldwide collection of $960.7 million, the movie also won five Golden Globe Awards, seven BAFTAs, three SAG Awards, and 13 nominations at the 96th Academy Awards.
While working on the movie together, the movie’s cast developed a strong bond. So much so that they often made jokes at the expense of each other during the promotional interviews. During one such interview, Downey Jr. began wheezing when Murphy read a fan’s compliment.

Many of cinema’s hard men are notorious softies in real life. Ray Winstone may well be one of those, even if he admits to not looking particularly approachable.
“My wife always says to me, ‘Why do you look like you’re going to kill someone when you walk into a room?'” he tells Variety. “But I don’t mean to!”
Winstone’s long-standing status as the go-to man to depict violent approach-with-caution individuals or British mob bosses continues to serve him, however, as “The Gentleman” — Guy Ritchie’s eight-part Netflix spinoff of his 2019 gangster comedy feature of the same name — proves. In the series, awash in the classic Ritchie mix of guns, drugs, violence, aristocrats, boxing and tweed, Winstone stars as a gangland patriarch and head of a massive weed-growing empire. Because of course he does — who else would you cast as an elder statesman than the actor...

The State of the Race
The Best Original Screenplay race weirdly goes all the way back to the Gotham Awards, which get plenty of credit as the ceremony that most often kicks off awards season, but is not the most accurate in predicting what players will be winning Academy Awards come Oscar night. But the reason to mention its 2023 iteration specifically is that it was the first place where “Anatomy of a Fall” won the Best Screenplay category, but “Past Lives” won Best Film.
Throughout the season, “Past Lives” has managed to win some huge awards, most recently receiving Best Feature, Best Director, and Best First Feature at the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards,...

Last year, all four acting Oscars were taken home by first-time nominees. Michelle Yeoh (Best Actress), Jamie Lee Curtis (Best Supporting Actress), and Ke Huy Quan (Best Supporting Actor) all won for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while Brendan Fraser claimed Best Actor for “The Whale.” This was a historical achievement as the last time this happened was back in 2006 when Philip Seymour Hoffman (Best Actor for “Capote”), Reese Witherspoon (Best Actress for “Walk the Line”), George Clooney (Best Supporting Actor “Syriana”), and Rachel Weisz (Best Supporting Actress for “The Constant Gardener”) all won on their first nominations.
But while it’s unlikely for all four acting categories to go to newbies, what about each individual acting category? Well, we’ve broken down each acting category and examined every acting winner of the last 20 years to see which category is most likely to award newbies and which is most reluctant to.
