Sometimes to spice things up and get things moving an act needs a new face and a new feel. Unfortunately for the Baker boys that new face tends to cause nothing but problems when she begins to come between them. The trouble is that without Susie their sound is going nowhere fast, but with her it seems like their relationship and chance at fame is going away just as quickly. In such cases it’s usually best to figure out a happy medium so that all involved can feel like they came away with the best deal and no one gets

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of German cinematographer Michael Ballhaus. The 81 year old artist was a crucial figure in making me the movie maniac that I am today. Michelle Pfeiffer on the piano top in The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) -- hell the entire movie -- being a defining image in my life, after which I went from enthusiastic regular moviegoer to celluloid-devouring obsessive.
Ballhaus had retired after Martin Scorsese's The Departed (2006) making only one German movie in the last decade of his life and we had hoped each year that he'd be announced as an Honorary Oscar recipient. His three scant nominations -- The Fabulous Baker Boys, Broadcast News, and Gangs of New York -- do no justice to his long and gorgeous career. That's because they don't feel representative of his career as a whole and because,...

Michelle Pfeiffer is making her return to Hollywood in full force—and looking just as beautiful as ever.
The 58-year-old actress covers the April issue of Interview Magazine, and People has the exclusive first look at her stunning photos and interview with director Darren Aronofsky.
Following a brief hiatus from the spotlight, she tells Aronofsky of her resurgence: “I’m an empty nester now. I’ve never lost my love for acting.”
“I’m a more balanced person honestly when I’m working. But I was pretty careful about where I shot, how long I was away, whether or not...

Relationships between family members — particularly those between fathers and sons — have a way of settling into certain rhythms that often grow into ruts. They petrify, they become inflexible, and it can feel as though attempts to thaw them out only tend to exacerbate whatever estrangement was causing the problem in the first place. It’s unconditional love as a slow-motion car crash, and it’s something that Rob Connolly’s “Edge of Winter” understands in its bones, even if — like so many people who’ve been in a similar position — the film is woefully incapable of expressing itself when it matters most.
But Joel Kinnaman definitely deserves an A for effort. The recent “Suicide Squad” survivor anchors this solemn dramatic thriller as Elliot Baker, a burly and bearded middle-aged divorcé who lives in a one-bedroom apartment that he shares with a large shotgun and an even larger variety of flannel shirts.

On this day in history as it relates to the movies...
Dr Duran Duran and the Orgasmatron
1835 P.T. Barnum and his circus begin their first tour of the Us. Wasn't Hugh Jackman supposed to play him in an original movie musical? Is that still on or did the endless Wolverine show derail it? (sigh)
1840 Novelist Thomas Hardy is born. Movies adapted from his work include multiple versions of Jude, Tess, and Far From the Madding Crowd
1904 Johnny Weissmuller is born. We just wrote about Tarzan and His Mate (1934) which you should definitely see
1926 Character actor Milo O'Shea, aka Dr Duran Duran who tried to kill Jane Fonda by excessive pleasure in Barbarella, is born.
1937 Sally Kellerman, the original " 'Hot Lips' O'Houlihan" is born
1944 Egot composing legend Marvin Hamlisch (of "A Chorus Line") fame is born...or as Cher calls him "Marvin Hamilsmisch". Classic songs include the Oscar winning "The Way We Were...

Jeff Bridges, psychic medium. Ask the Oscar-winning actor a relatively straightforward question and you can expect an answer ten times more interesting and in-depth than you expected. On approaching his character, the gruff Master John Gregory, in Ya fantasy adaptation "Seventh Son": "You know these kinda psychic guys that channel spirits and stuff? I remember Ramtha...this woman would channel this spirit named Ramtha," said Bridges, referring to controversial American mystic J.Z. Knight. "And...it has that aspect to it for me. You know, I'll just invite a spirit or a character into me [so it can] have its way with me. And I did that in this case. Once you get the costumes on, and you're in those wonderful Dante Ferretti sets and stuff, you open yourself to be inhabited by a character to have its way with you. And that's kind of what happened [on 'Seventh Son'], you know." The Sergei Bodrov...

In "Seventh Son," Ben Barnes plays the seventh son of a seventh son, a mystically indebted apprentice who goes on the road with Jeff Bridges, who plays a Spook, the last of a dying breed of knights who defends the innocent from the ghastly forces of darkness (led, in this case, by an incredibly over-the-top Julianne Moore as a fearsome witch). Barnes's Tom follows the Luke Skywalker trajectory of starting off as a slightly above-average farm boy to becoming the savior of the land.
And Barnes has some history with this kind of thing, having starred in the "Chronicles of Narnia" movies (with far more benevolent beasts). When we got to speak to Barnes about "Seventh Son," we asked him about how he came aboard the project, what it was like working with Bridges and his comely costar Alicia Vikander (don't worry - if you don't know who she is,...

When the Baker Boys—a.k.a. the Bridges brothers—got together for EW's reunions issue on the Today show, along with their Susie Diamond, co-star Michelle Pfieffer, there was, naturally, some ribbing. When Beau explained that for their movie lounge act they had to play on "dead keys, in the end, because they had to have all the fill in noise," Jeff interrupted: "Beau played on dead keys. I actually played all my part." Beau's response: "Oh no!" And how did Beau, with his full head of hair, get a bald spot for that famous scene in which Jack...

If there's still something strange in your neighborhood, 30 years later, it looks like you can still call on the Ghostbusters. As part of EW's annual reunion issue, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, and director Ivan Reitman revisited the iconic 1984 film's legacy. For the cover shoot that brought the crew together, Al Roker from Today spoke to the cast and director about their memories of the film, including just what exactly was in Slimer's ectoplasmic goo. The cast has spent the last few months exploring Ghostbusters' place in both film and New York City's history,...

Today the new season of Tfe begins! We're celebrating with an all top ten list day. Every few hours, a new and highly random top ten list to kick off the Fall Movie Season (our favorite time of year!). Let's start with something that's been haunting me because I forgot to post about the 25th anniversary of The Fabulous Baker Boys yesterday, one of my all time favorite films. A long time ago in a New York City that still felt like a galaxy far far away (I was a recent transplant... 1999/2000?) I attended a Jeff Bridges photography show. He's really a very good photographer and takes photos on the sets of his movies. I stared and stared at this enormous black & white photograph of Michelle Pfeiffer that Bridges had taken.
This photo is so magnificent in person
My bank account was humiliation in numeric form though I don't remember...

The Selfridge children are all grown up in the third series of Mr Selfridge, which picks up in 1919 just after the end of World War I.
In the new series which is about to start filming in London, the role of Harry’s eldest daughter, Rosalie, (played by Poppy Lee Friar in Series 1 and 2) is taken over by Kara Tointon. Kara (represented by Curtis Brown) played Dawn Swann in Eastenders for four years and won Strictly Come Dancing in 2010.
Kara’s real-life sister, Hannah Tointon, plays her rebellious sister, Violette in a move that sees the sisters acting together for the first time. 26 year old Hannah (represented by Independent Talent) played Katy Fox in Hollyoaks and more recently starred in Switch on ITV2 and BBC's The Hour.
