Some people enjoy spending holidays alone, but for others, it’s a painful reminder of having no one else to share the merriment and make new memories. In Alexander Payne‘s The Holdovers trailer, Paul Giamatti‘s Paul Hunham learns the value of opening his heart to a troubled student during a lonely Christmas break. The feature marks a welcomed return for Payne, whose previous directorial effort was for the social satire Downsizing starring Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, and Hong Chau.
Here is the official synopsis for The Holdovers, courtesy of Focus Features:
From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, The Holdovers follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually, he forms an unlikely bond with one of them — a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) — and...

Even though A Million Little Things opened in 2018 with Boston businessman Jon Dixon (Ron Livingston) killing himself, series creator DJ Nash says his drama is about embracing what lies ahead. “I knew from the beginning how I wanted the story to end,” says Nash, who’d previously worked on comedies such as Traffic Light, Up All Night, and Growing Up Fisher. This deeply personal tale of the people impacted by Jon’s suicide — not only his wife and children, but best buds Eddie (David Giuntoli), Gary (James Roday Rodriguez), and Rome (Romany Malco) and the ones they love — launched two years after This Is Us made it cool to cry and has leaned into the feels ever since. A wry, emotional ensemble soap, the ABC series has explored mental and physical health, racism, sexual identity, addiction, and more. (The Emmys bestowed an honorary award on Things in 2019 for offering “television with a conscience.

TV trends come and go, but who would’ve thought that, with all the focus on inclusion in the past few years, there would now be an uptick of, as IndieWire’s Michael Schneider puts it, “white dudes in crisis” on TV?
To fill the diversity void, the networks have added actors of color to supporting roles. It’s heartening to see that this has created a more realistic picture on TV of what the world looks like, such as the marriage between Zach Braff’s and Tiya Sircar’s characters on “Alex Inc.” representing the growing number of mixed-race marriages in America. Unfortunately, it’s also disappointing to see so many of these favorite actresses get shunted from one supporting role to the next.

USA has picked up a pair original half-hour comedies to air alongside its big acquired series "Modern Family." It has not, however, made a move to revive "Happy Endings" following that show's cancellation by ABC.
Speculation has been running high for several weeks that USA would add "Happy Endings" to its roster if ABC dropped the show, but it didn't happen as part of USA's upfront announcements on Thursday (May 16). A report on Deadline says a pickup for "Happy Endings" is now "unlikely."

Every new TV show is a gamble. That’s especially true in the crowded fall season, when the networks roll out an array of new shows. Many of them won’t make it to a second season – and even if they do, it takes years for a TV show to turn a profit. There are ways to mitigate the risk, of course. You cast a recognizable actor. You work with a successful producer – look, there’s Ryan Murphy doing his Ryan Murphy thing with The New Normal! And even in the modern era of DVR and downloading, a good timeslot is still essential.

New Girl ended last season with Schmidt breaking up with Cece to let her date within her natural habitat of models and chotchbags or whatever, à la White Fang. It's pretty clear they'll get back together at some point on the show — why torture us? — but in the meantime, Cece will have a new boyfriend. Nelson Franklin, of the quickly forgotten Traffic Light, will play Cece's new love interest, Robby, who TV Guide says "is an embarrassingly bad dancer and deaf in one ear." Take that, people who say New Girl is too invested in quirks!

Nelson Franklin has been cast on New Girl Season 2 in a role that... well... just look away now, Schmidt!
The former Traffic Light star will debut on the September 25 premiere as Robby, Cece's new boyfriend. Yes, she's moved on that quickly from our favorite douchebar-jar-donating roommate.
TV Guide describes the character as a very nice guy and a very bad dancer. He's also deaf in one ear.
Cece and Schmidt won't be the only New Girl characters facing change. Previous reports state that Jess will actually get fired from her job as a teacher.

If the title of ABC's upcoming comedy, “Don't Trust the B---- in Apt 23” is any indication, producers Nahnatchka Khan and David Hemingson are prepared to push the boundaries of what's acceptable on broadcast television. In a bid to portray what Khan calls “real life,” the network’s ensemble comedy will not shy from showing a twenty-somethings’ world of drugs, alcohol and one-night stands. Proof: in the show’s very first episode, series bad girl Krysten Ritter is caught messing around with her roommate’s (Dreama Walker) fiancé -- on her birthday cake. The series, which was originally developed at Fox in 2009, is part of the “Modern Family” network’s growing push into comedy. When it bows April 11, the Khan-created half-hour will join “The Middle,” “Suburgatory” and “Family” in ABC’s increasingly valuable Wednesday night lineup.Khan, best known for “American Dad!,” and Hemingson (“Dad!,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Traffic Light”) sat down with.

ABC is taking a pretty daring chance with Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt 23, but it’s one that builds off the success of similar rolls of the dice we’ve seen recently. It’s daring because it focuses on obnoxious people, and hopes that, within a sitcom atmosphere and thirty-minute ability to establish itself, it can infuse these characters with enough quirk and likability that it doesn’t turn viewers off faster than it can turn them on.
That’s rough ground, and as a general rule spring efforts have enough things working against them, but Apt 23 may have enough behind it to gather a following. The real trick is getting people past the first couple of episodes, and it’s a clever move on ABC‘s part to make the first two episodes available online before the show officially premieres. The hope for success here is...

Just because his long-running show Chuck ended, doesn't mean TV can keep Zachary Levi down! He has joined a new Fox show called Let It Go, with a pilot written by D.J. Nash, who hasn't had the greatest of television track records with short-lived series like Hank (with Kelsey Grammer), Accidentally on Purpose (with Jenna Elfman), and Traffic Light. Each only lasted for one season. The only successful show that Nash has been involved with is 'Til Death (with Brad Garrett), which lasted four seasons.
The show's plotline has been kept under wraps for now. It will revolve around Levi as the husband in a married couple and will routinely feature Levi's character's sister and his best friend. Are you glad to see Zachary Levi back on TV? ...
