Chicago – NBC/Universal released a wave of Blu-ray and DVD releases last week as four of their comedies came home with “30 Rock: Season 6,” “The Office: Season Eight,” “Parks and Recreation: Season Four,” and “Up All Night: Season One.” For some reason, “The Office” is the only NBC comedy available in HD (with an UltraViolet copy to boot) but all four sets are well-transferred and three of them feature impressive bonus material. Get your laugh on.

“30 Rock: Season 6”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
A bounce-back season after the more inconsistent fifth one features the cast and writing crew at “30 Rock” more playful, silly, and fun than they have been in years. As the show heads into its final season on NBC, it’s nice to see it if not at an absolute creative peak at least pretty damn close. And...

Chicago – Warner Brothers likes to pull handfuls of titles out of their immensely deep catalog and they’ve come back with a unique, interesting wave of releases at low prices to spice up your Summer this year. The films have little in common (although several could be classified as sci-fi) and vary wildly in quality but all are likely to have a fan or two out there wondering why they haven’t been released on Blu-ray. Now they have.

“Altered States”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Director Ken Russell passed away last year leaving critics and movie lovers to continue to debate his unique style and best pictures. Personally, I’ve always been a fan of his 1980 adaptation of the legendary Paddy Chayefsky novel “Altered States,” featuring one of William Hurt’s most fearless and interesting performances. It’s both classic Russell in its unique style and a...

Chicago – Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man,” “Spider-Man 2,” and “Spider-Man 3” were just released on Blu-ray to coincide with the upcoming theatrical release of Mark Webb’s reboot, “The Amazing Spider-Man,” opening in theaters on July 3, 2012. All of the Sony Bd releases are pretty standard although purists will like the consistent packaging and the chance to own them at a low price point (close to $10 at some outlets) before they’re probably repackaged again when “Amazing” hits Blu-ray in time for the holidays. None of the releases include any notable new special features (other than the inclusion of Ultraviolet and some games on the first film) but they all included a wealth of them in previous editions.

Chicago – Seann William Scott (“American Reunion”) does the best work of his career in the raunchy hockey comedy “Goon,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD. Co-written by “Superbad” writer Evan Goldberg and co-star Jay Baruchel, this is a clever little sports comedy that should find a loyal audience on the home market.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Scott plays bouncer-turned-player Doug Glatt with a clever mix of innocent loyalty and self-aware sweetness. He takes a part that could have been unbearable and makes him into a very likable guy. We root for Doug because Scott grounds the character instead of turning him into the caricature that he could have become. This is a guy who didn’t think he was very good at anything and found out that he could play a role on the ice and maybe even get the girl. Scott carries the movie by presenting his journey as one that comes...

A city is burning, bombs are dropping and our hero passively looks on before being dragged to safety. This clichéd set-up is well-worn within the apocalyptic genre and as the opening of Xavier Gens' (Hitman, Frontiers) last feature, it acts as an effective ruse to lower expectations. Thankfully, the rest of The Divide generally manages to steer clear of such clichés, resulting in both thought-provoking and shocking viewing.
After a nuclear explosion, the residents of a New York apartment block seek refuge in the building's basement that conveniently doubles as a bomb shelter. Having madly rushed into the basement crushing fellow tenants en-route, nine survivors are forced to tolerate each other's company with no imminent rescue. The door dividing the living and the dead is their only means of escape but is also likely to lead to radiation poisoning.
The situation of course becomes tense and worsens when sounds...

Chicago – Ti West’s “The Innkeepers” is one of the most divisive films of the year, a love-it-or-hate-it affair — my favorite kind of movie. I see both sides. I get how the slow burn doesn’t work for some people (and, honestly, it didn’t really work for me in West’s “House of the Devil”) and I get how modern horror fans might be upset at the lack of a sure payoff in this ghost story.
Blu-ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
However, it’s like a ghost story around a camp fire. For every camper who thinks it’s silly, the kid next to him can feel his skin crawl. For me, it’s a great, atmospheric piece that emphasizes setting over modern horror conventions like slashers and twist endings. It’s old-fashioned…and I mean that as a compliment even if I know it may not be to you.
