Fun as always

I just love how quirky and fun this show is and will be sad when it's done. All the relationships between the characters are supportive and heartwarming. Also looking forward to the unfolding of the alien abduction part of the storyline.

And a special shoutout to whoever chose to honour a great Canadian band by finishing the episode with the classic "Lost Together" by Blue Rodeo. Hopefully more people outside of Canada discover their awesomeness. I wish they included more Canadian content, seeing as the show is shot in the Vancouver area.

I really wish the series wasn't ending! Not a lot of shows like it.

Season 3 found the Writers again

Wow. Season 1 was so much fun. You never knew what Harry would say or do. The cast was coming into their own. Then .... Season 2 hit. Ouch. Writing fell off a cliff. Politics crept into the show content. A season to forget.

Season 3 .... The writers creativity is back. Fresh dialogue. Compelling story arc is forming in front of our eyes. The writers are weaving some X-Files stories into the story arc and it is a breath of fresh air. Harry has never been funnier. The cast is really growing into their characters with some really good standout performances. I finally see this show taking off and breaking through the roof.

Comedy and pathos

Warning: Spoilers
For me personally the two standout characters in this episode were Judy and Liv. Their scenes were poignant and genuine and I didn't see them coming. Those kinds of scenes are all the more effective in a comedy. Those alone made the episode particularly good. It was also nice to have Jay and Asta have some scenes together. And the sheriff finally not being a heel to Liv, showing some sensitivity, was a good character development.

The plot is growing too with the whole supervolcano and Galactic Federation. I hope the writers make it all credible because it sounds strange that the Grays want to destroy Earth if they want to live there. The mystery of the abductions has expanded to the mayor's wife who apparently had a daughter abducted by the Grays. So Liv, the mayor, his wife, the general, the dead alien hunter (whose son was alien abducted) and now Max are tied in.

I wanted to add two more things. First, the past two seasons had some potentially interesting characters who came and went too quickly: Elliot, the Native American archeologist; Liza, the real Harry's daughter; Isabelle, the real Harry's wife; and Sahar, Max's classmate and ally until the writers made her insufferable.

Second, the show would be enriched by combining the sensibilities of Northern Exposure, Dark Winds, and its own dark humor.

In any case, this should make for some good storytelling.

3 in a row

I'm not going to call this a return to form just yet, but it's looking like it.

Who ever messed up season two seems to have either learned their lesson or been replaced by someone who understands the strengths of this show and what works and what doesn't.

Firstly the comedy is stronger, makes more sense and is kept on track with the whole premise. The long established childishness of Harry is a rich seam, and they mined a couple of nuggets from it in this episode.

Secondly, we've got a decent story brewing, sort of. Not sure about the Grey's motivation and hoping we don't overshoot the mark with earth bombs and global networks of things.

I did like the portals and the new character at the end, but the true task is to keep it local and believable while making it entertaining. No need for light sabres and x wing fighters, keep it to they move amongst us.
