In all of Stephen King’s massive catalog, few works are as bleak as his 2010 novella collection Full Dark, No Stars. Rather than supernatural entities, these four dark tales feature human monsters and deal with the horrors that live inside the human heart. Two novellas serve as mirror images of each other, exploring the female response to predatory men. “Big Driver” follows cozy mystery writer Tess Thorne on a mission of revenge against the stranger who raped her and left her for dead. “A Good Marriage” centers Darcy Anderson, a happily married woman faced with a horrifying choice when she discovers her husband’s secret life.
Both novellas were faithfully adapted into feature films in the year 2014 – for better or worse. Premiering on Lifetime, Big Driver tackles King’s rape-revenge story with Maria Bello staring as the vigilante writer and Olympia Dukakis as her literary detective. Ann Dowd and Joan Jett...

Industry veterans Amanda Sherwin, Mike Messina and Seth Needle are teaming up to launch Blue Harbor Entertainment, a new distribution, marketing and consulting company. The news comes as the American Film Market kicks off this week in Santa Monica where the executives will be on the ground looking for partners. Blue Harbor is looking to distribute 10 to 15 feature film releases per year, as well as provide advisory services to third parties. The trio are currently negotiating multiple deals.
“Blue Harbor provides an alternative path for filmmakers — the opportunity to hire their distributor, and work with them, collaboratively and transparently, to bring their films to audiences,” said Needle. “Whether that’s something they decide once they have a completed picture, during the packaging stage or somewhere in between, we are here to help them craft a strategy for success.”

“How’s your marriage?”
What a long dark night it’s been on this trip through Stephen King’s 2011 collection Full Dark, No Stars. After traveling back to 1922 and taking a detour through Big Driver, Losers Justin Gerber, Rachel Reeves, and Jenn Adams make a pit stop in Derry for a nasty little tale of schadenfreude and revenge with the third tale of this sordid collection in Fair Extension.
Then, it’s full speed ahead to Castle Rock with the collection’s final novella A Good Marriage. Inspired by the horrific crimes of Btk, King’s story follows a happily married woman who finds a life-altering secret buried in her garage. Topics range from the ethics of True Crime storytelling, the fine line between art and exploitation, and the lies that get us through the day.
Stream the episode below and return next week when the Losers head to Hollywood King.

With summer behind us, it’s time to embrace the Fall season ahead. Pumpkins, black cats, and deadly rats. Be sure to keep an eye on your watch as the sun hits that horizon much, much earlier this time of the year. Before you know it: Full Dark, No Stars. Alas, The Losers’ Club has reached the next novellas collection in their journey through Stephen King‘s catalogue.
Released in November 2010, King’s third novellas collection — following 1982’s Different Seasons and 1990’s Four Past Midnight — captures the legendary author at his deadliest. No shit. King is truly the Master of Horror within these four sordid tales of retribution: 1922, Big Driver, Fair Extension, A Good Marriage. These are the stories that never leave the mind.

Stephen King isn’t just an author by this point: He’s an institution, a legacy of classic horror stories that capture our imaginations, fuel our nightmares, and speak — when he’s at his best — to our shared experiences as flawed, emotional beings. The best King stories scare so many of us that we all feel connected, and even the worst are usually pretty fun.
King’s books and short stories quickly became hit movies, many of them celebrated in their time, and some flopped so hard that hardly anybody remembers them. Cataloguing every adaptation might be a fool’s errand, so we made some tough choices and decided to focus only on his theatrical releases.
And even then, there are so many King adaptations that it gets tricky. We’re not including the made-for-tv films (which are legion), and the sequels to King’s work rarely have anything to do with the source material,...

With any new entry into a well-trod subgenre, it's always challenging to make the material feel a little fresher and more unique compared to what's come before. A number of thrillers have had hapless families discover the father/husband had a secret, dark past, making husbands secret murderers, reformed former criminals ("A History of Violence"), cheaters, liars with other families ("Frequent Flyer") or even secretive agents or heroes (humorously subverted in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"). It's a tried-and-true background for a thriller, but the setup always presents a unique challenge: how could this very specific trope be pivoted to stand out in a crowded field?

ABC‘s Alaska Daily is approaching the season 1 finale, and the big question remains: Who killed Gloria Nanmac? The Alaskan government believes they got their guy, but Eileen Fitzgerald, Roz Friendly, and all of us sitting at home know that Toby Crenshaw is innocent. So the reporters returned to the drawing board in Alaska Daily Season 1 Episode 10, which led them back to a familiar face — Ezra Fisher.
Theo Stockman | Photo by Walter McBride/Getty Images Ezra Fisher is a suspect in Gloria’s murder in ‘Alaska Daily’
Alaska Daily took a three-month hiatus, meaning some details from the show’s first six episodes are a bit fuzzy. So, we figured we would recap Ezra Fisher’s story from the first half of Alaska Daily to spark viewers’ memories.
The show introduced Ezra at the end of episode 4 when Eileen and Roz gained access to the unredacted version of Gloria’s original case file.

On Sept. 8, 2017, New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. Pictures released It: Chapter One, the first of two movies based on the classic 1986 novel by Stephen King and a film destined to go down in cinema history as the highest grossing horror movie of all time.
Opening to a record-shattering 124 million and eventually earning 701 million worldwide (against a measly budget of 40 million or so), It: Chapter One was also a fantastic movie. It captured both the unimaginable terror of the entity known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown (helped by a genuinely unnerving performance by Bill Skarsgard) and the emotional, coming-of-age story of the seven kids known as the Losers Club, who bond together to battle the malignancy under their town.
It: Chapter One also proved that a mainstream, high-quality, studio-backed picture could still be made from King’s work, after a nearly 20-year period in which many adaptations either did moderately well...

The latest book from Stephen King, a collection of four novellas titled If It Bleeds, has already yielded three separate movie deals since its publication in May.
According to Deadline, three of the tales in the book — “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone,” “Rat” and “The Life of Chuck” — have been snapped up by three different companies. The title story, meanwhile, seems likely to get an adaptation too, since it stars a character that has already appeared in two different King adaptations.
King has an unusual way of doing business in that he licenses the options to his stories for the sum of one dollar (with more to come later), although he gets certain creative control rights as part of the bargain and the productions must go in front of the cameras within specified time frames. That latter aspect may be a challenge with Covid-19 still hampering a lot of Hollywood productions.

One of America’s most vicious serial murderers was also a good dad, says ID's two-hour special Btk: A Killer Among Us
Dennis Rader murdered 10 people, including two children, in the Wichita, Kansas, area between 1974 and 1991. He taunted the police and gave himself his own nickname, the Btk Killer, based on the method of his crimes: Bind, Torture, Kill. When he was arrested in 2005, Rader pointed the police to the Wichita Public Library, where he'd stashed a letter he wrote in October 1974 detailing the killing of four members of the Otero family on January 15, of that year. Two of the victims were children, aged 9 and 11, the bodies were found by their sibling, who was only in tenth grade. A lesser-known novella from the bestselling author lands on Netflix with a transformative performance from Thomas Jane and a mounting sense of dread
Another week, another Stephen King adaptation. Following on from The Dark Tower, It and the effectively nasty sex-game-gone-wrong thriller Gerald’s Game, Netflix is quietly launching a brooding take on one of his lesser-known works. The collection Full Dark, No Stars has already spawned two middling movies – Big Driver with Maria Bello and A Good Marriage with Joan Allen – and now, a third novella is hitting the screen with far more distinction.

A Good Marriage is an independent film based on the Stephen King story by the same name in Full Dark No Stars. A solid script and decent acting by the supporting cast does the story justice. But because the story is 99 Darcys perspective and much of the camera time is on her alone the strength of the film comes down to the performance of the actress who plays her Joan Allen.

Weve seen a plethora of Stephen King adaptations over the last handful of decades. Some are good some are bad and some truly truly shine. A Good Marriage holds the appeal and polish of some of Kings greatest transfers. The flick ranks right up there with superb features like The Shawshank Redemption 1408 The Green Mile The Mist and Stand By Me. If youre going to seek out any of the recent King transfers do not hesitate for a moment to add A Good Marriage to your mustsee list. Grade A work right here...

Well, this could mean trouble for Cell as it was announced this morning Clarius Entertainment has acquired domestic distribution rights to the film based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. So far Clarius has had an awful track record at the box office with the releases of And So It Goes, Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return and most recently the Nicole Kidman starrer Before I Go To Sleep, the three of which combine for a grand total of only $26.8 million at the domestic box office. The budget of the Oz feature alone was $70 million while the other two haven't even been reported. Perhaps, however, this will be a turn for the better as the film, directed by Tod "Kip" Williams (Paranormal Activity 2), stars John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan) and Stacy Keach centers on a powerful signal broadcast across mobile networks worldwide, resulting in...

I was dimly aware, as a fan of both Stephen King and Joe Hill, that movies based on King's A Good Marriage and Hill's Horns were on the way. But Uncle Stevie totally took me by surprise with this tweet from last Friday: "My son's film, Horns, is Also available via VOD today. Father and son movies! How Cool Is That???" Horns is the first film made from a work by Joe Hill, based on his 2010 sophomore novel. A Good Marriage is from the same year, with Stephen King adapting his own novella, found in the collection Full Dark, No Stars, for the screen, something he's done rarely and not recently. (The last King feature screenplay appears to have been Pet Sematary, 25 years ago.) I watched both films back-to-back. Here's how they stack up alongside one another.Stand-alone Entertainment ValueHorns starts out like a realist film about a guy...

Golden Years: Askin Adapts Stephen King’s Domestic Dilemma
For those hoping for resurgence in the quality of Stephen King stock, the unique promise of A Good Marriage is not the ticket. Sporting King’s first adapted screenplay of his own work since 1989’s Pet Sematary, his customary flourishes are stamped all over it, including the predilection for the perspective of the underdog and plenty of trawling around in the private headspace of the favored character, which inevitably leads to moments of exaggerated artificiality. True, King has (or had) a unique flair for creating intriguing and sometimes empowered female protagonists, but the suburban housewife anchoring the lukewarm scenario here isn’t nearly as well-honed as the film necessitates.
Married for twenty five years, Darcy (Joan Allen) and Bob (Anthony Lapaglia) seem to have found the secret to success. Celebrating with friends and associates, including their daughter, Petra (Kristen Connolly...

There was a moment during A Good Marriage, adapted by Stephen King from his own novella and directed by Peter Askin (Company Man), where I thought to myself, you know, I'm kind of digging this. In the aforementioned scene, gas station lights and a restaurant sign in the background provide a cool ambience as an unidentified woman walks out to her car, the screen fading in from black to reveal a noirish gray color palette. A dull, eerie piano score kicks in as the woman gets into her car and drives away, unknowingly tailed by another vehicle from which the action is captured. Unfortunately this is the opening shot of the film, and it is followed shortly by a cliched opening monologue, a generic party sequence, an uncomfortable sex scene, and some seriously hokey dialogue. I'm not sure either King or Askin had terribly lofty ambitions for the film anyway,...

Steven King’s books and films are rife with zombie babies, witches, vampires and werewolves. This lengthy list of creatures now includes your average next door neighbor, the serial killer.
In Stephen King’S A Good Marriage, Darcy (Joan Allen) and Bob (Anthony Lapaglia) Anderson, a happily married couple, are enjoying a 25th anniversary party hosted by their two children. Their daughter is getting married in a few weeks. The Andersons are empty nesters with a lovely home, Bob has a successful job as an accountant and is a coin collector – theirs seems to be picture perfect marriage, except for one thing… Bob is a serial killer. He’s brutally murdered 12 women and goes by his alter-ego, “Beadie”. He’s also been taunting Maine’s Attorney General with notes signed from him since his first killing in 1980.

Stephen King's body of work is formidable, and he's still churning out novels at an admirable pace, which makes this adaptation of A Good Marriage mildly surprising. It's not bad, but it's puzzling why director Peter Askin ("best" known for 2007's Trumbo) and King himself bothered to adapt a nondescript novella from the Master of Horror's autumn years. "Nondescript" certainly describes Bob (Anthony Lapaglia) and Darcy (Joan Allen) Anderson, a couple enjoying their 25th anniversary. This is King, however, so there's also a Mysterious Creepy Guy shadowing the couple who may be connected to the serial killer called "Beadie," who recently slew his 12th victim. It's not much of a spoiler to say Bob, who leaves Ned Flanders-esque notes advising his wife how to park the...

Stephen King may be one of our most prolific writers, but he tends to let others get the ol' finger blisters when it comes to adapting his tales for the big screen. One exception? Four interesting tidbits coming atcha that we neglected to discuss for multiple reasons. If you hadn't yet heard them, they'll feel like brand new news to you.
In what is clearly understood to be an awards-traction move, Jon Favreau's sleeper hit Chef will be coming back to theaters this Friday in wide release. I'm not sure it has the critical oomph to win any nominations and it didn't have the box office size to make that a non-issue (a la gargantuan hits like My Big Fat Greek Wedding) but could it sleeper hit its way into, say, The Screenplay race? I'm realizing I neglected to consider it at all there which is an obvious mistake. I had a really good time watching it with friends though; it's an easy sit and safe for diverse groups of viewers.
