Morgan Spurlock’s follow-up to the Big Mac-guzzling documentary is a vanity project that fails to uncover anything groundbreaking
Morgan Spurlock is his own worst enemy. Ever since he bottomed out America’s collective stomach in 2004 with the fast food exposé Super Size Me, Spurlock’s films have gradually nudged his public persona into the foreground at the expense of the trenchant reportage that originally endeared him to us. Though his vanity hit its nadir with the male-grooming documentary Mansome — a feature-length ode to Spurlock’s trademark handlebar ‘stache — that narcissism still threatens to eclipse the subject at hand. And by revisiting his breakout pet topic of cheap food’s steep costs, Spurlock’s made his own self-absorption more abundantly present than ever.

Since The Lego Movie re-built popular media interest in the legendary construction toy earlier this year, the notoriously Hollywood-shy Danish toy manufacturer has become a little more open to the approaches of filmmakers. Apart from partnering with The Simpsons for their 550th episode, Variety reports that The Lego Group have officially backed a documentary – Beyond The Brick: A Lego Brickumentary – narrated by Jason Bateman.
The film is co-directed by Academy-Award winner Daniel Junge (Saving Face) and Academy-Award nominee Kief Davidson (Open Heart). It aims to take an in-depth look at the cultural impact of the Lego brick by exploring themes such as its use in art installations, its use in therapy, and the world of ‘AFOLs’ (Adult Fans Of Lego). There is certainly plenty of material for them to draw upon from around the world, as Lego recently announced that – since their launch in 1949 – over 560 billion Lego parts have been produced.

Watch This: Celebrities Talk About Losing Their Virginity The new webseries is honest and endearing without being cute. By Johannah King-Slutzky Morgan Spurlock and John Stamos have partnered up for a new webseries about celebrities losing their virginity. I expected the series to be kind of meh-- for one thing, as a rule I consider Morgan Spurlock to be the Michael Moore of everyday bullshit. (You lost me at "Mansome," Spurlock!) Plus, John Stamos, a straight man with permanently applied good looks, seemed like a strange choice for a show about "diverse" sexual experience And on a platform that seems desperate to rejuvenate its brand. (If you didn't already guess it, the aspiring internet cool dad of which I speak is none other than Yahoo, exclamation point.) But somehow, it works. The ten five-minute episodes released so far feature both men and women. Two [...]...

Since taking third place on The X Factor back in 2010, One Direction have become one of the best known boy bands around the world, touring all over the globe in the past three years. And for those of you who’ve never been to a show, as well as for those who have, the band will be making their big-screen debut this summer in One Direction: This Is Us.
The first teaser trailer for the documentary/concert movie launched back in February. And now Sony have released the first full-length trailer for the film.
And, as I write this, the following is somewhat amusingly trending on Twitter: #TheBandThatLostTheXFactorButWonTheWorld.
One Direction: This Is Us is a captivating and intimate all-access look at life on the road for the global music phenomenon. Weaved with stunning live concert footage, this inspiring feature film tells the remarkable story of Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis’ meteoric rise to fame,...

Having soared to become the most well-known boy band of the moment, One Direction are just a few months away from making their big screen debut with the documentary-cum-concert movie, One Direction: This Is Us.
The first teaser trailer was released back in February, when fans were asked to submit photos to help unlock the first footage. Since then, we’ve seen a handful of first-look images from the film.
And now, after over two months of fans submitting their photos, Sony have released the film’s first official poster. And to sweeten the deal, the poster will go the extra mile in ‘coming to life’ for the band’s fans.
Paying tribute to those that helped catapult the band to success, the poster’s backdrop is a mosaic made up of thousands of Little Things – the fans themselves. Hundreds of thousands of people have been flooding the official site...

As a lead actor, Jason Bateman should be used to negative reviews. From his first starring role in Teen Wolf Too through his new film Identity Thief, his Rotten Tomotoes page has a lot of green splotches. The Switch, Couples Retreat, The Change-Up are all certified rotten. But does that mean he needs a better agent? Of course not. He's getting work, he's getting paid, and some of his movies are relatively successful. Even The Switch seems to have earned above its budget, surprisingly. And, to be fair, he produced his latest, as well as his previous negatively received effort, the documentary Mansome. Say what you want about him squandering his talent, but it's his choice and Identity Thief will probably make a good amount of cash this weekend. So, let's talk about...

Young Jason Bateman was born on January 14, 1969, and soon thereafter arrived on the scene as a child actor in "Little House on the Prairie" in the early '80s. He went on to star in other relatively nondescript TV movies and shows before ultimately landing the role of Michael Bluth, the everyman trapped by the absurdity of his ridiculous family in Fox's (now Netflix's) cherished "Arrested Development."

An unexpected hit and an unfortunate disappointment lead this week's crop of new DVD and Blu-ray releases as Seth MacFarlane's Ted and The Bourne Legacy hit store shelves. The other major release is Ice Age: Continental Drift, but looking beyond that we have some interesting smaller titles including the Sundance hit Why Stop Now starring Jesse Eisenberg and Melissa Leo, Morgan Spurlock's Mansome, and the long-lost '80s cult classic Miami Connection (which is also available on limited edition VHS and digital download here). Academy Award-nominated documentarian Morgan Spurlock — best known for taking aim at McDonald’s with Super Size Me — will direct a 3-D concert film starring One Direction, the British boy band that’s stolen tweenage hearts around the world. According to a press release, the film will be released Labor Day weekend 2013 — the perfect pre-school year pick-me-up.
“This is an incredible opportunity and an amazing moment in time for the band,” Spurlock said in a statement. “To capture this journey and share it with audiences around the world will be an epic undertaking that I am proud to be a part of.

If you needed any further evidence that Morgan Spurlock has slid from somebody who perhaps had an interesting viewpoint on modern contemporary life to a man who is churning out doc shlock, here it is: he'll be directing the One Direction 3D concert movie. That's right, the latest boy-band sensation is following in the footsteps of Justin Bieber and Katy Perry and getting their own movie that will make its way to bargain bins and pop culture irrelevancy soon enough. For Spurlock it's another project in a string of lightweight movies that has seen him turn his ever winking camera to Star Wars nerds ("Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope"), male grooming ("Mansome"), himself/advertising ("The Greatest Movie Ever Sold") and hell, he even made the hunt for Osama Bin Laden seem pretty trivial with "Where In The World Is Osama Bin Laden." This will be your standard (carefully vetted) "behind-the-scenes" plus.

Ever since his cinematic sparring with McDonald's in "Super Size Me," filmmaker Morgan Spurlock has been pushing buttons and investigating societal phenomena with abandon. Spurlock is the master of integrating himself into subcultures -- it's kind of his thing.
So now, Spurlock has entered the world of manscaping; in his latest documentary, "Mansome," he takes a look at the appearance of the modern man and how it's changed, especially over the last decade. He also delves into the more extreme versions of manscapers, including a man who lives for his beard, and another who spends nearly half his day grooming.
Moviefone chatted with Spurlock on the phone about "Mansome" and our changing society, the manliest men alive today and what the future holds for all the manscapers out there.

Morgan Spurlock's feature Mansome, a documentary that takes a comedic look at male grooming habits, is heading to Yahoo as a new short-form web series. The new series, executive produced by Spurlock through Warrior Poets, Jason Bateman and Will Arnett through DumbDumb and Ben Silverman through Electus, will expand its scope to include other male-focused subjects such as sports and gadgets. The project, set to debut in July, was previously referred to as The MANual at the Yahoo didigital upfront during the Digital Content NewFronts in New York earlier this month. Mansome is part of Yahoo's expanding slate of programming focused on a young male audience, which includes Electric City from Tom Hanks, Cybergeddon from CSI creator Anthony E. Documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (the trailblazer who discovered in Supersize Me that gorging on McDonald's every day is a poor dietary choice) released his latest movie, Mansome, over the weekend. Produced by Bluth brothers Jason Bateman and Will Arnett, the film explores the varied and unique grooming habits of modern man as he battles the advent of male beauty products, the increasing popularity of manscaping, and an age where the male identity is no longer defined by woodworking abilities or preferred blend of whiskey. As far as investigative filmmaking goes, “men are hairy” is barely a notch above “fast food is bad for you.” And while the topic skews a little too closely to the annoying notion that we’ve lost what it means to be a man now that women are power executives too, the subject of the cosmetic male identity is admittedly a rarely addressed issue. The Oscar-nominated director of Super Size Me brings us another documentary that hones in on a specific subject with such precision, it can’t help but involve myriad other cultural issues in the process. Morgan Spurlock’s Mansome gives an historical and cultural account of male grooming. The seasoned director presents the concept in all its awkwardness, even as he identifies the beard, the mustache, and other aspects of a man’s physical appearance as a means of understanding men of varied social classes, sexual identities and ethnic backgrounds. Mansome might be best understood as a comedy, with commentary from Zach Galifianakis, Judd...

Director Morgan Spurlock has a talent for making insightful, engaging, and informative documentaries. Unfortunately, that talent is not in view for his latest film, Mansome. This movie is supposed to "explore the question: In the age of manscaping, metrosexuals, and grooming products galore -- what does it mean to be a man?" The answer, it would seem, is to be a vain, pompous, insecure stereotype.
The names Spurlock interviews for Mansome include Judd Apatow, Adam Carolla, Zach Galifianakis, Isaiah Mustafa, Paul Rudd, John Waters ... and as he likes to do, Spurlock himself gets in front of the camera briefly, to shave his mustache. The most interesting subjects are executive producers Will Arnett and Jason Bateman, who almost appear to be channeling their Arrested Development characters as they spend a day at a spa getting massages, facials and taking baths together.

There are three major films competing for your attention this weekend (yes, one of which is based on a board game) and a decent slate of smaller releases as well. Battleship will attempt to sink The Avengers and Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator will simply try to overcome its poor marketing campaign while What to Expect When You're Expecting is likely to attract a strong female turnout. Elsewhere, Morgan Spurlock's latest documentary Mansome hits select theatres, along with Panos Cosmatos' trippy Beyond the Black Rainbow, and Dustin Lance Black's Virginia. There's also Lovely Molly, a new horror flick from the director of The Blair Witch Project, and Hysteria, a Victorian era comedy about the invention of the vibrator starring Maggie Gyllenhaal. What will you be watching this weekend? Battleship The Dictator What to Expect When You're Expecting Beyond the Black Rainbow (limited) Lovely Molly (limited) Mansome...

Last weekend, "The Avengers" clobbered Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" and earned some serious dough. But, we kind of saw that one coming. However, this weekend, Earth's mightiest heroes might have some legitimate competition. Peter Berg's "Battleship" has been earning big bucks overseas and is making its debut this weekend. And if the alien-apocalypse film doesn't completely steal audience's attention, there's Sacha Baron Cohen's newest envelope-pusher "The Dictator" and the star-studded baby guide adaptation, "What to Expect When You're Expecting." So, before you put all your money down on a your favorite new release, let's take a look at Moviefone's Weekend Movie Preview. (For a review roundup on the new slate of films, scroll down to the bottom.) Nationwide Releases "Battleship" What's the story? Sharing nothing with its board-game namesake, the film stars Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Liam Neeson and pop sensation Rihanna (making her on-screen debut) as...

Chicago – Morgan Spurlock is an awfully likable guy. I’ll never forget the day when he held a special screening of “Super Size Me” for an auditorium full of college kids. After participating in an extended Q & A, Spurlock spoke with every single student that wanted to shake his hand and pose for a picture. When the building finally had to close up for the night, the Spurlock love fest spilled out onto the sidewalk.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The amiable, often meandering nature of his work directly reflects the agreeable personality of the filmmaker himself. While confrontational documentarians like Michael Moore embrace their fearsome reputations like a badge of honor, Spurlock is so approachable that you’d hardly expect him to have anything up his sleeve. Yet as entertaining as his films can be, Spurlock could certainly benefit from borrowing some of Moore’s shrewdness.

Director Morgan Spurlock has set his sights on McDonalds, Osama Bin Laden, the advertising world and Comic-Con, to name just a few subjects of his popular documentaries. His latest, Mansome, targets modern masculinity, and the myriad ripple effects created for men by a newfound obsession with grooming and appearance in our society. Spurlock’s movie – executive produced by Will Arnett and Jason Bateman (who are interspersed throughout the film in hilarious comedic interludes) – explores facial hair, products geared toward male customers and body issues, and includes interviews with ordinary people, sociologists and celebrities (Zach Galifianakas, Judd Apatow, John Waters and Paul Rudd make particularly memorable appearances). As with any Spurlock production...

It's the rare documentary filmmaker who becomes a recognizable figure. Morgan Spurlock is one of the few. With his newest documentary feature, "Mansome," headed into theatres next week, Indiewire has selected a number of Morgan's films, TV episodes, and special appearances for our latest curated Hulu's Documentaries page. Morgan Spurlock emerged from the premiere of his first film, "Super Size Me," with the Documentary Directing Award from the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and a breakout hit. Putting his own body through the challenge of eating nothing but McDonald's for an entire month, he scored theatrical distribution, an Oscar nomination, real world impact, and established a bona fide career as a documentary filmmaker. In an episode of the Fox Movie Channel's series "Life After Film School," a group of film school students interview Spurlock about how his own time in film school, how he became a documentarian, and the...

How does "Up All Night" star Will Arnett keep his sophisticated look so fresh and so clean, clean?
"The most extravagant thing I do is I moisturize," the actor tells Zap2It at the Hollywood premiere of his new film, "Mansome" on Wednesday (May 9).
The documentary, directed by Morgan Spurlock, was executive-produced by Arnett and his "Arrested Development" co-star Jason Bateman, and both are followed on screen as they search for the secret to a man's ideal hygiene ritual.
"I just discovered that I needed to do less," says Arnett, fresh of attending Monday's Met Costume Institute Gala. "The best thing to do for a dude is really keep it simple."
Experimenting in pedicures, milk baths and the likes, Arnett and his creative partner critically (and of course, sarcastically) consider the price a man has to pay to look good and make an impression. And while he agrees it might...

Are we currently in the grips of a boom in male vanity? Morgan Spurlock thinks so, and in his new documentary, Mansome (which recently premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival), he proves his point in several different ways: He sends Jason Bateman and Will Arnett to get pampered at the spa; he interviews "professional beardsmen" and male hipsters about their grooming habits; and he talks to people like Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, and Judd Apatow about the areas they may or may not feel pressured to shave or wax. Fittingly, then, the movie's poster (which Vulture is exclusively premiering) tweaks the manscaping fad in the name of film promotion. Mansome hits select theaters May 18, which should give you just enough time to grow out an artfully ironic mustache before attending.

That's it. It's a wrap. The Tribeca Film Festival is over for another 12 months. And while it was an improvement from years past, despite a promising line-up the festival proved to be somewhat disappointing: most of the best regarded films ("2 Days In New York," "Take This Waltz," Searching For Sugar Man" being three prime examples) had premiered elsewhere, while the more high-profile, star-laden of their world or North American exclusives landed with a thud.
However, even while the festival still grapples with its own identity, there were some real gems in the line-up: there are a few films that justify whatever else we had to sit through in the course of the last few weeks. And let's not forget the festival did secure "The Avengers" and "The Five-Year Engagement," two films we loved (though try and ask any civillian who got into either and you'll hear a lot of crickets). Below,...

What makes a man shave his chest? Sport a hirsute, ridiculously long and absurd-looking beard? Bleach his anus, thread his eyebrows or play around with his facial hair in any number of manscaping ways? These are some of the questions posed in Morgan Spurlock's latest cheery and congenial documentary, "Mansome."
And the music in Spurlock's documentaries of late are always a dead give-away of what's in store tone-wise (in case it’s not obvious): generally a jovial, breezy and blithe ol' time for what's usually an 80-minute trifle. And "Mansome," the documentarian’s latest, is an amiable look at male grooming, and therefore as a byproduct, masculinity too (though it's not a focus), and it falls safely and neatly into a pleasant tone.

I ended up skipping the festival yesterday due to feeling pretty crumby when I woke up. I slept most of the afternoon away and then caught a few films in the online press screening room at night. Feeling much better today, I made my final trip into the city for the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival.
Being a big fan of James Franco, I was looking forward to checking out Francophrenia despite the intensely mixed reactions. It is not an easy film to judge. Very experimental and free form, I.m still not quite sure what I watched even after the Q & A with Ian Olds (co-director, co-writer) & Paul Felton (writer). It starts out as a fairly regular behind the scenes look at the making of a special episode of General Hospital cut together from the mundane stuff usually left on the cutting room floor. Then it switches into something quite weird...

A film festival can’t provide the definitive word on how comfortable men and women are with themselves in today’s society, but it can offer clues. That’s what occurred at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City when two movies with world premieres at the festival, “Mansome” and “Sexy Baby,” serendipitously happened to have back-to-back press screenings. “Mansome,” which opens in theaters on May 18, is a new documentary by the prolific Morgan Spurlock (“Super Size Me”). It takes a humorous look at the ever-more-enthusiastic grooming habits of men today, ranging from...

Yesterday I caught Migraine, one of Tribeca’s “Men-Hattan” short film program. It’s about a shoe salesman on a trip to New York City with a bit of social baggage: he’s a recovering addict and a homophobe. I won’t go further into the plot, but suffice it to say that the big city has a few things to teach him on both of those points. It’s well-directed and has some interesting ideas, but that’s not why I’m bringing it up. Those of you who follow me on Twitter probably saw that I also sat through Morgan Spurlock’s new film yesterday, Mansome. It’s an exploration of how the men of the 21st century are becoming hyper-conscious of their looks, and why that might not be a good thing. It has very little interest in its own...

Following up on last week's preview of the Tribeca Film Festival (site), this'll be the entry that'll carry us through to Sunday. Introducing Slant's package of reviews, Ed Gonzalez argues that Tribeca "has blossomed from a celebration of the Big Apple as a filmmaking center into a great facilitator and promoter of international film and video culture." The Los Angeles Times' Steven Zeitchik agrees that it's "a prime venue to discover international films." More packages and lists: Smithsonian Magazine's Daniel Eagan ("What to See"), indieWIRE ("12 New Films We're Excited For"), Filmmaker's Scott Macaulay ("25 Films I'm Looking Forward To"), Movies.com ("20 Most Anticipated Movies"), Time's Lily Rothman ("Top 15 Chatter-Worthy Films"), Time Out New York and Twitch ("Top 15 Picks").

Men in the 21st century find themselves at an interesting crossroads. There is a burgeoning awareness of men and the importance of their looks, a burden that was almost exclusively laid at the feet of the fairer sex (at least in modernity, and when talking in broad generalizations). Taking on these traditionally female-branded concerns means that the identity of man is shifting. This question, one that affects men across our great nation, deserves an educational and thorough documentary to explore why this movement is happening, what its possible consequences are, and reasoning out whether this is for good, for ill, or not worth our time.
Mansome the new documentary from Morgan Spurlock, is not that movie. Nor does it try to be. It’s a lighthearted take at these large, sex-defining questions that fits perfectly in the director’s oeuvre. Sugaring and waxing, getting hair dyed, painting nails, buying high-end razors: all are things only women do in the name of beauty, right?
Well, not so fast.
A new documentary 'Mansome' -- directed by Morgan Spurlock and produced by Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Ben Silverman -- weighs in on the definition of masculinity in a world where hipster facial hair and men's follicles are being analyzed in a way they never have been before.
Studies show men now spend more time than women getting ready to go out; they even shill out more moola on high-end products. In fact, the Daily Mail reports, "men spend 83 minutes a day on personal grooming, including cleansing, toning and moisturising, shaving, styling hair and choosing clothes." And the U.K. site 'Ape To Gentleman' reports, "men are now spending £11.72 per week on grooming products compared to their female counterparts who spend exactly one pound less.

Morgan Spurlock's new documentary Mansome finds folks like Zach Galifianakis, Paul Rudd, Will Arnett, and Jason Bateman exploring rituals of manliness and asking questions to find out what it takes to make a man a man. Dishing up all the beards, mustaches, back waxing, and other manscaping moments you could ever possibly want, the film's look at men and their grooming habits promises to hilariously define masculinity in the 21st century. I guess there comes a point in every man’s life where they wake up one day, look in the mirror and say “When did I start growing hair there”? Or that special time in your life when facial hair becomes a reality and you say to yourself “How fricking bad ass would I look with a goatee or mutton chops”? Most guys have been there and now, thanks to Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and director Morgan Spurlock, there is a new documentary called Mansome that tackles the topsy turvy world of a man’s upkeep, or manscaping if you’re savvy.

Here at Vulture, we're obviously excited about the upcoming Arrested Development season that will bow exclusively on Netflix next year, but we haven't quite figured out how to deal with all ten new episodes coming out at once, instead of one a week. "Records have always come out as an entire piece of work, and you can listen to whatever tracks you want — that's the way I look at it," star Will Arnett told us last night, at the Tribeca premiere of his new film Mansome (out May 18). "I think it's going to be good! In a lot of ways, instead of just waiting until the end of an episode, you're going to have the opportunity to say, 'Oh, wait' if something reminds you of something else, and you'll be able to go back and rewatch that episode. If anything, it's going to make people go deeper." Arnett...

Not only is the new documentary from Morgan Spurlock taking men to the spa as one way of exploring the concept of a truly manly man through the manscaping and grooming rituals that are part of our lives, but there's plenty of great recognizable men to keep the conversation interesting. "Sexy Baby" is an important film. "Mansome" is not. It may be an unfair comparison, since Morgan Spurlock and Jeremy Chilnick’s latest documentary aims for comedy over substance throughout. But both films address the impacts and effects of insecurity among women ("Sexy Baby") and men ("Mansome") and thus make for an interesting pairing. Launching them at the Tribeca Film Festival, typically strong in its documentary programming, was a smart move not only because a good portion of their content takes place in New York City, but also, at least in the case of "Sexy Baby," because the setting provides a culturally influential place to start a serious discussion (see: "Bully"). Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus’ "Sexy Baby" had its world premiere Friday night at the AMC Lowes Village 7 in front of a packed crowd with a predictably female tilt. Fest co-founder Jane Rosenthal introduced the film with the...
