While you can never really say that one show is objectively better than another, here the facts speak for themselves.
True Detective Season 1, starring McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, boasts a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to 84% for Season 3, 78% for the most recent Season 4, and a lowly 47% for Season 2.
Audiences largely agree, rating Season 1 the highest at 89% and Season 2 the lowest at just 27%. Seasons 3 (55%) and 4 (57%) are about equal in viewers' eyes.
The average viewership tells a similar story. The original averaged 2.33 million viewers per episode. Season 3 is significantly lower at 1.25 million, with Season 4 averaging 0.65 million viewers per episode.
Season 2 is the anomaly. Its average of 2.61 million is the highest of any franchise. But a deeper dive shows that this was a reaction to how good Season 1 was, and it's no wonder that Issa López chose to tie Season 4 to it, piquing fans' interest and expectations.
Early in the fourth season, which opened to generally positive reviews,...

When Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves McConaughey step in front of the cameras, it’s always for a very good reason. What cause is better than bringing awareness and raising support for Matthew’s charitable project, Mack, Jack & McConaughey? The annual two-day joint fundraising effort took place in Austin, Texas. Matthew stepped out with his wife of 14 years and their three children, who look much more grown-up than the last time we saw them.

Among the actors, around whom there is not so much hype, Colin Farrell obviously stands out, as he’s a jack of all trades. It’s proven by his brilliant performances in the dark comedies Seven Psychopaths (2012) and The Lobster (2015), thriller series True Detective (2015) and the 2022 drama hit, The Banshees of Inisherin.
There is a movie, however, that even better demonstrates how great the actor’s dramatical talent is. Its plot revolves around a loving husband and father Jake, played by Farrell, who all of a sudden finds his son becoming weak and unresponsive.
However, it turns out it’s not their real son, but rather an android, who assists the family’s adoptive Chinese daughter Mika. Jake does all he ever can to repair the android, playing such a significant role in Mika’s growing up and exploring the world around her.

“The canvas is unlike any other,” reveals David Rysdahl about “Fargo.” In our recent webchat he adds, “You can do extremely funny and there’s extremely dark. It’s like a sheet of music. Getting these scripts feels very lyrical.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Fargo” is the FX anthology series created by Noah Hawley that was inspired by the 1996 Coen brothers film. Each season takes a darkly comedic look at characters dealing with life and crime in the Midwest. The series’ fifth installment tells the story of Dot, played by Juno Temple, whose normal life is disrupted when her abusive ex-husband discovers her whereabouts. When one thinks of auteur-driven Peak TV in the streaming age, the first shows that generally come to mind are “House Of Cards” (2013) with David Fincher at the helm (at least for the first few eps), “True Detective” (2014) by director Cary Fukunaga, and Steven Soderbergh’s “The Knick” (2014). Crucial to the mix, but sometimes missing in that conversation, is Jane Campion’s “Top Of The Lake” starring Elisabeth Moss, which debuted in 2013, right at the beginning of this new second golden age of TV.

“The light. Always, the light.” Tom Ripley is staring at a Caravaggio painting in a Roman church, his typical blank expression a touch more bewildered than usual, when a priest comes up behind him and tells him to pay attention to the light, how the artist uses the contrast of brightness and deep shadow to direct the eye. The moment is brief; Tom isn’t one for introspection, and like a shark, he never stays in place for long. But the line doubles as a clue to the audience as well, some of whom have been as bemused as Tom by “Ripley’s” quietly dazzling style.

Jodie Foster is undoubtedly one of the biggest female stars in Hollywood. The actress made a name for herself by playing the young prostitute Iris Steensma in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, after having appeared in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore two years prior. But, while her filmography includes some important titles like The Accused (1988), Sommersby (1993), Maverick (1994), Contact (1997), Anna and the King (1999), Panic Room (2002), Flightplan (2005), Inside Man (2006), The Brave One (2007), Nim’s Island (2008), Carnage (2011), Elysium (2013), The Mauritanian (2021), and Nyad (2023), her best-known role is that of Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs, which also brought her her second Oscar. Recently, she also appeared in True Detective: Night Country.
But, while she has definitely gathered a large number of major roles, she has also – as you might have assumed – rejected and lost several other major roles, and from what we know now, one of these roles was a major Star Wars role.

Setting a vampire — even a tiny one, as in “Abigail” — loose on the world is a messy affair, which got the IndieWire Craft team wondering less about stakes and more about modern special effects make-up. Are there fake blood brands you can buy? Are there different blood recipes for film versus TV? How much has fake blood changed from Nosferatur to Hammer horror to today’s scary movies? Or is fake blood just all VFX these days?
Who better to ask than Dave Elsey of Igor Studios, a self-described makeup FX Jedi and one of the lead designers of the chilling corpsicle in “True Detective: Night Country”? A connoisseur of practical tricks to create worlds of fantastic horror, Elsey’s recipes for fake blood are most often based on the ones that makeup legend Dick Smith came up with in the ’70s, which have been used in everything from “The Godfather...

1954's "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" was the last gasp of Universal Pictures' black-and-white horror heyday. Pivoting away from literary adaptations towards something more resembling contemporary man-in-suit monster movies, "Black Lagoon" introduced one last staple of the Universal Monster line-up: The Gill-man. A missing link in the evolutionary chain, the amphibian man has the same mix of terror and lovelorn pathos as his monstrous brethren.
It's not quite the pop-culture staple that "Dracula" and "Frankenstein" are, but "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" has been reimagined many times (most famously in 2017 with Guillermo del Toro's Best Picture-winning oddball romance "The Shape of Water" — it was almost black-and-white like "Black Lagoon" too). Now a new comic book starring the Gill-Man comes forth from Skybound Entertainment, boasting a title that belongs to a forgotten Universal Horror picture: "The Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives!"
Skybound isn't just revitalizing "The Transformers" and "G.I. Joe.

After the adaptation of Stephen King's detective story Mr. Mercedes, which was praised by both fans and critics, another adaptation of the book from the Bill Hodges series has been released. The fact that television producers have begun to turn to the author's rather unusual works is a trend to be excited about. Both Mr. Mercedes and the 2020 series The Outsider are primarily detective stories, not horror.
King's works in this genre haven't yet become overgrown with self-repeats – that's why watching these adaptations is much more fascinating than seeing how poor people get lost in the tall grass or pets rising from the dead.
What is The Outsider About?
According to the plot of The Outsider, the body of a brutally murdered schoolboy is found in a small town. All evidence points to coach Terry Maitland, a seemingly respectable man who bears little resemblance to a brutal killer.

“Shōgun” is looking to become the next “Game of Thrones” Emmy sensation thanks to its similar awe-inspiring world-building combined with political machinations and stunning performances. The FX series adapts James Clavell‘s 1975 historical novel of the same name. The story follows an English sailor (Cosmo Jarvis) who ends up shipwrecked in Japan while Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) uncovers secrets that could benefit him in the political wars to come as he tries to rule one of the five Regents in Japan.
Husband and wife duo Rachel Kondo and “Top Gun: Maverick” story writer Justin Marks oversee this spectacular mini-series, which is a comprehensive, historical study that transcends world-building to present compelling characters. The expansive cast all deliver career-best work while Kondo and Marks handle each plot thread smartly and expertly.

As you prepare to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Limited Series, be sure to check out our photo gallery highlighting the likeliest contenders. As of now, the frontrunner is the FX anthology “Fargo,” which is seeking the honor for its fifth iteration after winning for its first in 2014. It was also recognized here in 2016 and 2017.
FX has indeed produced several serious Best Limited Series candidates this year, including “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” “A Murder at the End of the World,” and “Shōgun.” Its most recent victories came for the first two seasons of “American Crime Story” (2016; 2018).
Having conquered this category with “The Queen’s Gambit” (2021) and “Beef” (2023), Netflix’s best shot at achieving three wins in four years lies with “Ripley.” Other strong contenders from the streamer include “Griselda” and “Black Mirror,” the latter of which won Best TV Movie every year from 2017 to 2019 but can no longer compete...

It has been a lucky 13 years since Tom Hiddleston first played Loki, the God of Mischief in the film “Thor.” He returned to the role recently for season two of the TV series “Loki.” This Disney+ show provided a beautiful end (we’ll see) to the character’s epic arc.
The sophomore outing of the series seee Loki trying to save the universe with the help of Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), Mobius (Owen Wilson), and Ouroboros (Ke Huy Quan). Kang (Jonathan Majors) is once again at the center of the trouble. The series is fantastical and is held together by the superb performance of Hiddleston. Once again, this classically trained actor brings Shakespearean authority to the role. He is also able to infuse increasing vulnerability to the former villain, making Loki one of the best characters in MCU history. Critics agree, “Loki” is the Tom Hiddleston show.

Will “Under the Bridge” go over big with voters? Did Anna Sawai just lock up the Emmy? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss Hulu’s new limited series, the penultimate episode of “Shōgun” and more.
Based on Rebecca Godfrey‘s book of the same name, “Under the Bridge,” which premiered with two episodes on Wednesday, tells the true story of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta), a 14-year-old who was assaulted by a group of teens, mostly girls, and then murdered in a small town in British Columbia, Canada, in 1997. Riley Keough plays Godfrey, who died of lung cancer in 2022, a week after the show was announced, and Lily Gladstone plays a detective. Both are campaigning in supporting, which on the surface seems like category fraud, but we explain why this is the correct placement for both and how the teen cast members — which includes Chloe Guidry,...

Showrunner writer/director Issa López took over creative duties on HBO‘s acclaimed whodunnit thriller series “True Detective” from Nic Pizzolatto a few years back, and the results, a fourth season titled “True Detective: Night Country” were terrific (read our review). The 54-year-old actor shares three children with his wife Camila Alves: Levi, 15, Vida, 14, and Livingston, 11.
Matthew recently explained how he believes fatherhood has made him a better actor.

“Having children I know has made me a better artist and has made me a better actor, because kids see things for the first time all the time. Their questions are innocent,” he told People. “I become a better storyteller because I have kids, meaning, I come home from work on something like True Detective, and my 4-year-old kid goes, ‘What’d you do today?’ I cannot tell them what the show’s really about, it’s not age-appropriate. So I have to go into a parable for them.”

(1) This forecast, assembled by The Hollywood Reporter’s executive editor of awards coverage Scott Feinberg, reflects Scott’s best attempt to predict the behavior of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, not his personal preferences.
(2) Unlike many other lists, the objective of the forecast is not to include every show or person that is eligible for Emmys recognition, only the top tier of contenders.
(3) Nobody can watch every Emmy-eligible show, and Scott is no exception. Matthew McConaughey is opening up about the dynamic between him and Kate Hudson on the set of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
The Oscar winner sat down with People to celebrate the publication’s 50th anniversary, during which he talked through some of his most iconic roles, including his stint as the rom-com heartthrob. He recalled meeting his co-star before production began on the film.
“I remember we met on the Paramount lot — I believe it was the time — and those casting sort of meeting couches, especially for rom-coms, you want to see the chemistry between the two leads,” he said. “You want to see how the jive is. We’re not reading through the script. We’re not reading lines.”
He continued, “Immediately, we were comfortable with each other, and we jacked with each other, and we busted each other’s chops, and we laughed a lot.

The only person who knows for certain what happens to Detective Navarro at the end of HBO’s True Detective: Night Country is Kali Reis herself.
“I have my own interpretation for Navarro, but I have not shared that with a soul,” Reis shared during the Deadline TV Contenders panel for the series.
Reis was joined by her co-star Jodie Foster, as well as showrunner Issa López, to discuss Night Country. While the ending may seem quite ambiguous, López assured that there is “an answer,” if audiences look close enough.
“I think that if you look very carefully, very carefully at the show and follow the lines very carefully, there’s an answer to what we saw at the end,” she told the audience. “But again, there’s a space for where your heart wants to live…and what you need to get out of it.”

Fine performances and powerful visuals only partially compensate for the inevitable air of familiarity that accompanies Marco Perego’s debut feature. Although the filmmaker provides his real-life spouse Zoe Saldaña with one of her best roles in a long while — it’s nice to see her get a respite from the numerous sci-fi and fantasy blockbuster franchises (Star Trek, Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy) to which she’s attached, not to mention free of alien make-up — The Absence of Eden spins a by-now sadly familiar story of the human suffering engendered by the border crisis.
Saldaña plays Esmee, a Mexican private dancer who is forced to flee her country after she shoots and kills a client who attempts to assault her while she’s performing a lap dance. After discovering that he was a member of a cartel, she says a tearful goodbye to her abuela and enlists the services...

Alex Garland may have said that he’s not planning to direct again in the foreseeable future, but he is currently directing another film while his movie Civil War heads out into the world and he works on the scripts for the upcoming 28 Years Later trilogy (a follow-up to his Danny Boyle collaboration 28 Days Later). Garland’s new directorial effort is called Warfare, and he’s co-directing it with Ray Mendoza, who served as the military supervisor for Civil War. Garland and Mendoza also wrote the screenplay together. As Warfare moves forward, Deadline has just revealed the names of several cast members: Noah Centineo (The Recruit), Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark), Taylor John Smith (Where the Crawdads Sing), Adain Bradley (Wrong Turn), Henrique Zaga (The Stand), and Evan Holtzman (Hidden Figures).

The series finale of Curb Your Enthusiasm earned ratings that were pretty, pretty good for the show (hey, it’s probably the last time we can appropriate Larry David’s signature praise).
The April 7 finale had a first-night audience of 1.1 million viewers on HBO and Max (including replays), which was the best performance for Curb since the season 10 finale drew 1.4 million cross-platform viewers in March 2020. The initial airing on HBO drew 530,000 viewers — about 51 percent higher than the show’s linear average for the previous nine episodes — with streaming on Max and replays contributing the remaining 570,000 viewers.
For its final season, Curb Your Enthusiasm is averaging 4.9 million viewers per episode, a 14 percent improvement on the 4.3 million people who watched season 11 in 2021. That’s on the lower end of some recent HBO shows like True Detective: Night Country (12.7 million), Succession (8.7 million) and season two of The White Lotus (10.1 million). Curb did outdraw...

Having trouble predicting what will win Best Limited Series at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they are divided between five different programs: FX’s “Shogun,” FX’s “Fargo,” HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” HBO’s “The Regime” and Apple TV+’s “Lessons in Chemistry.”
As of this writing, a leading four out of our 11 Emmy Experts predict a victory for “Shogun”: Ben Travers (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety) and Joyce Eng (Gold Derby). The big-budget Japanese historical drama is based on James Clavell‘s 1975 novel, which was previously adapted into NBC’s three-time Emmy-winning 1980 miniseries. Cast members include Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai and Fumi Nikaido.
Two of our Emmyologists — Ray Richmond (Gold Derby) and Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) — instead believe “Fargo” will prevail.

The number of Gold Derby readers predicting the 2024 Primetime Emmy nominations in 16 major categories has risen above 2,000 even with the nominations announcement still three months away. Our predicted lineups have changed significantly within the last week alone, indicating increased support for some programs and greater apathy toward others.
Four new predicted acting nominees have emerged since April 1. The only one hailing from a continuing series is Theo James (“The Gentlemen”), who grabbed the fifth comedy lead actor spot from Kelsey Grammer (“Frasier”). The other three are TV movie star Tony Shalhoub (“Mr. Monk’s Last Case”) and limited series actresses Anna Sawai (lead; “Shōgun”) and Fiona Shaw (supporting; “True Detective: Night Country”) who displace Michael Douglas (“Franklin”), Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”), and Andrea Riseborough (“The Regime”) respectively.

The year is 2003. Robert Downey Jr. had just undergone a court mandated rehab to come out of his crippling drug addiction. His tryst with addiction had been holding his career growth back for quite some time. Fast forward 21 years. He’s a different man.
The Sherlock Holmes star has gone from strength to strength since then. He has won fans’ hearts. He has won the critics over. Winning an Oscar is the cherry (one which is no smaller than the ice cream) on the top. And all of this has been made possible because of one of his trait that even Jodie Foster had to recognize.
Nothing was hunky dory for Robert Downey Jr.

After the Kevin Costner exit drama in Yellowstone, Matthew McConaughey is no closer to signing the deal for a new spin-off series. While the actor’s involvement was reported a few months back, one issue stopped him from closing the deal. McConaughey will only agree to the series if he sees a script for the same from Taylor Sheridan. The same script issue was one of the reasons that drove Costner away from Yellowstone.

Interestingly, Paramount+ has roped in another star to helm a spinoff series from the Western drama. Michelle Pfeiffer of Ant-Man fame is reportedly close to striking a deal with the studio and Sheridan may shift his focus to this female-led series.

“Game of Thrones” actor Joseph Gatt has sued Los Angeles County, its district attorney and more for falsely claiming he was a pedophile after being arrested and charged with alleged sexual communication with a minor in 2022. The charge was later dropped, and he’s now calling the arrest “utterly baseless” in his lawsuit for $40 million.
Gatt filed the lawsuit Thursday and is suing L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón, Los Angeles County, L.A. County Deputy District Attorney Angela Brunson, LAPD Detective Denos Amarantos and the City of Los Angeles.
The lawsuit is claiming a “shocking and intentional destruction of Joseph Gatt’s acting career and personal reputation by Los Angeles County law enforcement personnel that resulted from a thoroughly botched criminal investigation, entirely lacking any probable cause, led by an obviously conflicted Deputy District Attorney who sought to destroy Gatt based on nothing more than bias and personal animosity.

Of course, TV fans needn’t be reminded that Farrell’s charming Irish talents have gone to waste in projects unworthy of his efforts. We shan’t...

HBO’s anthology series “True Detective” is back after five years with a new season that will compete at the 2024 Emmy Awards.
