The movie industry gave the late Erik Lomis — the bold and shrewd studio distribution chief who released hundreds of movies during his career — a fitting sendoff Wednesday night.

It’s been over 10 years since Speedy Ortiz shared their debut album, Major Arcana. Now, the beloved indie quartet is paying homage to the record with a 10th anniversary reissue featuring remastered versions of the songs, due out on November 17th. Listen to the first preview — a remastered version of “Tiger Tank” — below.
Major Arcana became an indie hit when it dropped in 2013, with Consequence’s Katherine Flynn writing at the time that Speedy Ortiz had masterfully utilized older sounds and styles, while still offering something entirely new and compellingly raw. “This is the real deal, ripped from notebook pages, the torn, frilly edges still hanging on,” Flynn wrote.
For her part, Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis explained that the album is teeming with the energy of the band’s early, DIY days. “Speedy made Major Arcana in a flash of momentum — four days of recording at Sonelab with our pal Justin Pizzoferrato,...

For a movie with a tagline that literally (and hilariously) states, "They'll die when they're dead," perhaps it's only fitting that "Expendables 4" feels like a last gasp for star-driven action blockbusters. In a noticeable shift in historic trends, audiences seem to have increasingly flocked to theaters less out of a desire to see specific movie stars, and more to catch the latest event-sized movie based on a recognizable brand. Tom Cruise may be on the frontlines fighting back against this rising tide with everything that he's got, but surely there's enough evidence to suggest that IP is what's selling tickets these days, not actors. Even A-listers like Chris Evans have begun to accept this, as he recently told GQ, "That was the beauty of working on Marvel films. You never really had to be front and center. The character is the star."
Just don't try telling any of this to the "Expendables" franchise.

A new Magic: The Gathering keyword introduced with Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths has already had a massive impact on the metagame despite the set being less than a week old. Companions, creature spells that trigger a permanent effect by meeting pre-determined conditions, are not only dominating Standard play but almost every ruleset considered legal for competitive play.
The majority of top players participating in various Magic: The Gathering Online tournaments since Ikoria‘s release opted to build their strategy around one of the powerful cards, with Arena Decklists podcast co-host Bryan Gottlieb recently pointing out just how prevalent Companions have proven to be in such a short space of time. The number of top finishes taken by decks including any one of ten Companions available was as follows, according to Gottlieb:

Before Martin Scorsese became one of the greatest directors of all time there was “The Big Shave.” Before Taika Waititi directed a Marvel movie and won an Oscar for “Jojo Rabbit” there was “Two Cars, One Night.” Before Andrea Arnold and Lynne Ramsay become two of our best working directors there was “Wasp” and “Small Deaths.” Most great directors start their careers with a great short film, several of which IndieWire has rounded up below for your streaming pleasure.
Of the selection below, short films by Andrea Arnold, Taika Waititi, Nacho Vigolando, and Marshall Curry all landed Oscar nominations in the Best Live Action Short Film Category. Both Arnold and Curry won the Academy Award for their shorts in their respective years. For Scorsese and Darren Aronofsky, the shorts below served as breakthrough moments as film school students at New York University and the American Film Institute, respectively.

“For Sama,” Waad al-Kateab’s wrenching story of raising a young daughter in war-torn Syria, has been named the best nonfiction film of 2019 at the International Documentary Association’s 35th annual Ida Documentary Awards, which were handed out on Saturday night on the Paramount Pictures lot in Los Angeles.
Al-Kateab, who directed “For Sama” with Edward Watts, also received the Ida Awards Courage Under Fire Award at the ceremony. Last week, the film also won the top award at the British Independent Film Awards, a rarity for a documentary.
Steven Bognar and Julie Reichert received the Best Director Award, the first time the Ida has handed out that particular prize, for their look at the culture clash when a Chinese company took over an American auto glass factory in Ohio in “American Factory.”

About Last Knight: Kiriya’s Culture Club Reimagining of the Feudal System
It’s unclear for who or for what reason Japanese director Kazuaki Kiriya decided to undertake his English language debut, Last Knights, a convoluted pseudo-revenge flick that plays like some very watered down version of the classic 47 Ronin mythos but reconstituted within a parallel universe’s sci-fi inspired Crusades tale. A gig is a gig, so we can’t blame the poo poo platter of multicultural actors portraying peoples we’re supposed to believe all resided in the same place (not to mention, fought for the same cause), each with varying degrees of accented and/or broken English. Incredibly flaccid and late staged action sequences following a baffling revenge plot don’t help matters, except maybe to say that even if the world had known an age of such incredible diversity we still wouldn’t be able to all just get along.

Daniel Craig’s 007 is one lucky guy. In this November’s Spectre, the British spy will be trying out his terrible yet seductive one-liners on the likes of Monica Bellucci and Lea Seydoux, but today brings news that a third Bond girl has entered the picture: Mexican actress Stephanie Sigman.
The star, who previously toplined Mexico’s 2011 Oscars foreign language submission, Miss Bala, and Norwegian thriller Pioneer, was announced to be playing the role of Estrella via the James Bond 007 Facebook page.
Though Sigman, who’ll appear in Netflix’s upcoming Narcos and also had a role of FX’s departed The Bridge, is on the rise, she’s still less known than Bellucci or Seydoux, leading to speculation that her character is a dead woman walking. One Facebook commenter was quick to question whether she’ll be a “sacrificial lamb,” in the spirit of Shirley Easton’s Jill Masterston...

Though filming has been underway on the new James Bond film for some time, one more name has joined the cast of Sam Mendes' "Spectre" which opens this Fall.
Eon Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Sony Pictures Entertainment have announced that Stephanie Sigman has signed on to play a mysterious character currently known only as 'Estrella'.
The film sees a cryptic message from Bond’s past sending him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth.
Sigman is known for her roles in films such as "Miss Bala" and "Pioneer," along with FX's U.S. remake of "The Bridge," and is part of the cast of the upcoming series "Narcos".

Good day, horror fans. The scariest thing about this week might just be the complete lack of big horror releases in theaters. Arguably the biggest debut is Gregory Levasseur.s Egypt-set supernatural horror The Pyramid, but it wasn.t even given that wide of a berth. (It isn.t playing where I live, which may or may not be inside of a haunted pyramid.) There.s also Erik Skjoldbjærg.s Norwegian thriller Pioneer, but that.s got an even smaller release window. On the VOD front, December 5th saw the release of the thriller Poker Night, which stars Ron Perlman, Titus Welliver, Giancarlo Esposito and Ron Eldard. (Go watch The Babadook if you haven.t yet.) In smaller news, Uwe Boll has taken to Indiegogo to try and fund the presumably violent sequel Rampage 3: No Mercy. (Why?) The highly anticipated sci-fi thriller Z for Zachariah, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and...

This weekend, Reese Witherspoon looks for salvation on a 1000-mile hike in the docudrama "Wild," a snake expert will be eaten alive -- and fished out in one piece (hopefully) -- on "Eaten Alive" Sunday night at 9 p.m. on Discovery Channel, the British sci-fi series "Black Mirror" examines the dark side of technology on Netflix, and "American Horror Story: Coven," the third season of the popular series, will be available to stream on Netflix, too, beginning this weekend.
Also in theaters this weekend: "The Pyramid" follows an archaeological team hunted by an insidious creature after attempting to unlock the secrets of a lost pyramid. In "Zero Motivation," a unit of female Israeli soldiers at a remote desert base bide their time as they count down the minutes until they can return to civilian life. "Pioneer" follows a diver (Wes Bentley) at the beginning of the 1980's Norwegian Oil Boom...

Marking my second cinematic foray of 2014 into the lonesome world of deep sea diving (the first being James Cameron’s documentary Deepsea Challenge 3D), filmmaker Erik Skjoldbjærg transports us back to the “Norwegian Oil Boom of the 1980s” – a time in history where nations were battling for a slice of Norway’s blackest riches.
Pioneer is a story filled with greedy corporations, wide-eyed politicians, diving records, and conspiracies most foul, uncovering secrets buried below the murky sea floor for years without much notice. It’s a recognizable story of people becoming cogs in a dangerous machine running solely on the promise of tremendous payoffs, and the lengths some cogs will go for their due justice, but you’re right to question the intensity of this deep-sea-detective-case. Norway’s historical significance may be staggering, but facts don’t immediately translate into a suspenseful underwater mystery without a little help.

Often times, the most exhilarating way to effectively tell an intriguing story that’s set against captivating stunts is to feature an enthralling protagonist who’s relentlessly searching for a truth, which threatens their ability to understand their actual reality. That chilling fine line between the hero completely giving into their paranoia, and their ability to discover the true conspiracy, is also often highlighted in their interactions with a number of potential antagonists. The protagonist’s persistent quest to uncover the true moral and ethical dilemmas during the Norwegian Oil Boom 30 years ago is intriguingly presented in Norwegian co-writer-director Erik Skjoldbjaerg’s new thriller, ‘Pioneer.’ The filmmaker worked with Norwegian actor Aksel Hennie, [ Read More ]

Director Erik Skjoldbjærg never met a migraine he didn’t love. Whether his protagonists’ headaches, dizzy spells, and hallucinations are caused by the Norwegian midnight sun (Insomnia) or, as in the riveting new thriller Pioneer, deep-sea diving, their cranial torture becomes ours, flooding the screen. So does their mounting paranoia.
Petter (Aksel Hennie), a diver hired by a Norwegian-American crew to help build an underwater oil pipeline, has plenty of reasons to be paranoid. During a 500-meter plunge, he passes out and — according to his superiors — inadvertently causes the death of his brother and partner. As he struggles to clear his name, he discovers that a surveillance tape of the dive has been stolen, and that debilitating gas ...

Oil!: Skjoldbjaerg’s Latest an Icy Conspiracy Thriller
Norwegian director Erik Skjoldbjaerg has remained a hard director to peg ever since his celebrated 1997 debut, Insomnia, which predated the Nordic Noir craze that seems to have dominated the output of cinema from that region of the world for the better half of the last decade. A well intentioned English language debut followed with an adaptation of Elizabeth Wurtzel’s memoir, Prozac Nation, which received a maligned theatrical release, while his next two features (including an Ibsen update) never received Us distribution. Luckily his latest endeavor, Pioneer, which revisits real events from the early 80s Norwegian oil boom, will give him a bit more international attention. A mixture of native and American cast members, Skjoldbjaerg throws the events into a tangled web of conspiracy that sometimes seems to get a bit ahead of itself. But without a doubt, it’s an...

Two new thrillers hit VOD and iTunes this week, but while they couldn’t be more different in story they share two things beyond their first letter and inclusion under the same genre umbrella. They’re attractive visually and feature some solid performances. But is that enough to make either of them worth watching? Pioneer is a ’70s -set Norwegian thriller about the decade’s oil boom in the North Sea and follows a deep-sea diver intent on investigating the supposedly accidental death of his brother. His quest for the truth reveals a possible conspiracy involving Norwegian & U.S. interests and the billions of dollars at stake. Poker Night is far smaller in scale and focuses on a rookie cop forced to use lessons learned at the poker table with senior detectives when he’s abducted by a psychopath with a grudge. Pioneer It’s the 1970’s, and the oil and gas boom is lighting up the...

Binoche stars alongside Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as a war reporter torn between her job and her family.
The other big winner on the night was Eskil Vogt’s feature debut Blind which collected four awards, including Best Director and Best Actress (Ellen Dorrit Petersen).
Blind, about a woman coming to terms with blindness, previously took the World Cinema Scriptwriting award in Sundance and the Europa Cinemas Label in Berlin.

To mark the release of Pioneer on 4th August, we’ve been given 4 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
Set in the early 1980s at the beginning of the Norwegian oil boom, Pioneer sees the authorities racing to harness gas and oil deposits in the North Sea by laying a pipeline at a depth of more than 500 metres. Petter (Aksel Hennie – Headhunters) is obsessed with reaching the bottom of the Norwegian Sea and has the discipline and strength to take on the mission. But when a tragic accident changes everything, Petter embarks on a dangerous journey with no idea who is pulling the strings – until his very life is at stake.
With support from Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, American Beauty) and Stephen Lang (Avatar, Public Enemies), Hennie delivers a powerhouse performance in what is surely one of the most brilliantly realised deep sea thrillers ever seen.

★★☆☆☆It's not very often that a foreign-language original leaves you hankering for its already-announced Us remake. This, sadly, is the case with Norwegian director Erik Skjoldbjærg's surprisingly frothy fourth feature Pioneer (2013). Whilst substantially glossier than his most famous directorial offering to date - the pre-Nolan Insomnia (1997) - there's little of the heart or indeed dramatic tension that made his gloomy detective thriller such a noirish delight. Once again illustrating a preoccupation with hasty cover-ups and morally dubious goings on, Skjoldbjærg's Pioneer aspires to plummet the depths of his nation's collective conscience, but instead reveals itself as a rather shallow pseudo-conspiracy thriller.

This Norwegian thriller about early North Sea oil exploration sinks under the weight of its twists, chases and corpses
Pioneer is a tense, busy conspiracy thriller, pungently set during the early days of North Sea oil exploration, where cold, dark water boils inside the bore and the world upstairs appears murkier still. Aksel stars as Petter, a harried diver caught between greedy Norwegian contractors and a malign Us multinational (is there any other kind?). In its finest moments, Erik Skjoldbjærg's film aspires to be a Norwegian riff on Chinatown, rumbling and rattling with institutionalised evil. If only it didn't risk applying too much pressure. If only it didn't overload the cargo with so many plot twists, chases and corpses. Mayday, mayday, this film's about to break up.

A bunch of interesting trailers for various non-tentpole films have been released over the past 48 hours. Things kick off with "A Most Wanted Man," the film adaptation of the John le Carre novel and the final ever film of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Then there's the first trailer for "Pioneer," an "inspired by true events" thriller set in the North Sea in the early 1980s. Askel Hennie, Wes Bentley, Stephen Lang and Jonathan Lapaglia star in the story of a team of American divers helping Norway extract oil from the ocean floor - a tragic accident leads to one of the team realising his life is at stake - and not just from the elements.
Then there's a new and quite dark trailer for "Deliver Us from Evil," the supernatural thriller starring Eric Bana as a disbelieving cop and Edgar Ramirez and an unconventional priest who partner up on an exorcism case.

"Focus on the job and we'll all end up making a lot of money..." This looks eerie. After featuring posters yesterday, today we have the full Us trailer for Erik Skjoldbjærg's Pioneer, a Norwegian conspiracy thriller set in the 1980s about the beginning of the Norwegian Oil Boom and deep sea divers using "controversial techniques" to extract oil. The cast includes a number of recognizable names and faces, from Wes Bentley to Stephen Lang to Jonathan Lapaglia, and they speak in English most of the time. This actually looks way better than I expected and I'm glad I stumbled across this film, there's just something mysterious and alluring about it. And I'm glad the footage in the trailer actually looks solid. Take a look for yourself below. Here's the official Us trailer for Erik Skjoldbjærg's Pioneer, in high def from Apple (via Collider): Pioneer is set in the early 1980's,...

Conspiracy films can captivate an audience in surprising ways, and Hollywood has a long tradition of bringing these theories to life. In the upcoming film Pioneer, director Erik Skjoldbjærg explores a real life Norwegian big oil cover-up that includes murder, extortion, and diving in the North Sea.
In celebration of Pioneer‘s release today, we are counting down six of the best conspiracy thrillers.
5. Shutter Island (2010)
Perhaps better known for violent-gangster films than conspiracy theories, Martin Scorsese teamed up with Leonardo DiCaprio for the fourth time to stunning effects. Using conspiracy-theory tropes unapologetically, Shutter Island turns the genre on its head and questions the nature of conspiracy theorists within our society.
4. The Insider (1999)
Focused solely on their shareholders, corporations will often go to morally extreme lengths to maximize profits. There is perhaps no better instance of this than within the cigarette industry, where companies denied the harmful effects of cigarettes for years,...

When your ultimate adventure becomes your ultimate nightmare. If you're into deep sea diving conspiracy thrillers, then we've got the perfect film for you. Titled Pioneer, this Norwegian thriller is about a team of divers who were part of risky experiments at the start of the Norwegian oil-drilling industry in the early 80s. The cast includes Aksel Hennie plus Wes Bentley, Stephen Lang, Jonathan Lapaglia, Stephanie Sigman and Jørgen Langhelle. The film already premiered in Europe last year and has been waiting for a Us release, however io9 has debuted a new Us poster and we thought it was worth sharing to bring some attention to this interesting little film. I'm intrigued by all the imagery, but I'm not sure if it'll be any good. Here's the latest Us poster for Erik Skjoldbjærg's Pioneer, similar to the Norwegian one, debuted from io9: Here's a photo from the film...

Having long-operated cinematically as part of Sofia Coppola’s usual ensemble, the electronic group Air has recently taken to a range of other left-field projects. First it was a soundtrack in 2010 to Georges Méliès’ “A Voyage To The Moon," then accompaniment to the documentary “Corman’s World” more recently. Now the French duo are continuing that streak with a musical role in Norwegian director Erik Skjoldjaerg’s latest film, and we’ve got our first taste of the result. Via Empire, a series of six soundtrack cuts have hit the web from “Pioneer” the latest work by Skjoldjaerg (who directed “Prozac Nation” and the original “Insomnia”), and they offer Air’s signature sound transferred to the film’s tale of intrigue. Set in the 1980s during the Norwegian Oil Boom, the plot throws an ensemble including Aksel Hennie, Wes Bentley and Stephen Lang into political rivalries as they race to...

The latest slice of broody Scandinavian quality drama, Pioneer, is already touted for a Us remake. Like The Abyss without all the bothersome alien space tubes, it tells of a group of civilian divers who encounter the perils of the deep first-hand when they're sent to help construct a new oil pipeline deep below the surface of the North Sea. To add the requisite atmosphere and mood, French band Air have stepped up to deliver a score that is rich in both. There's no official soundtrack per se, but the band has composed a series of unnamed cues for the film and Empire is happy to be able to share six of them with you right here.Air, of course, have a rich film pedigree. They scored Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides and supplied tracks for Lost In Translation and Marie Antoinette, and in 2010 composed a new score for Georges Méliès great silent sci-fi,...

Now you may not have heard of Norwegian filmmaker Erik Skjoldbjærg, but his 1997 feature film debut Insomnia, was the source material for Christopher Nolan’s eponymous remake starring Robin Williams and Al Pacino. Only recently, Skjoldbjærg’s latest production Pioneer has also been confirmed to have a forthcoming Hollywood re-imagining, with word of George Clooney taking on the role of producer.
“I’d be more than happy for them to do that,” he told us, sitting back comfortably in during our meeting in a London hotel. “I made a film out of it. If they were to say ‘we want to make a remake and shelve your version, put it in a box and try and forget it ever existed’ it would be a different issue. But that’s not the way it works. I’m proud of the fact that Christopher Nolan went and made that remake, and actually...

Norwegian movie star Aksel Hennie tells us that he almost died when shooting the intense thriller Pioneer – resulting in a scene that, entirely accidentally, become one of the most memorable from the Erik Skjoldbjærg production.
“I almost died in one scene,” he told us during a phone interview. “I was asked to skid off the road and it wasn’t supposed to be a stunt at all. It was supposed to just a skid, stop the car and get out. But I drove too fast, my fault, the car rolled over, also my fault, and it flipped. I didn’t get what happened, I continued acting and the door to the car was yanked open, and the car exploded. The hood popped open and nobody could see if I was still alive. It was the press day for the movie too so we had the entire Norwegian press there. Pretty rock and roll.

George Clooney's production company Smokehouse Pictures is to remake Norwegian film Pioneer.
The actor and his producing partner Grant Heslov will bring the true story of a band of Norwegian divers to Hollywood, The Guardian reports.
The story follows 24 men who damaged their health diving to 400 metres below the surface to secure Norway's oil and gas fortune 40 years ago.
The men embarked on a long-term battle for compensation after claiming that they were not given the necessary information about the potential risks of the work they were carrying out underwater.
Last year, the European Court of Human Rights found the Norwegian state to be guilty of not providing the divers with necessary warnings, with the 24 men now expected to receive payouts.
"The plight of the divers is a very well-known story in this country," said Christian Fredrik Martin, producer of the Norwegian film. "When we first started work on Pioneer,...
