"I was training to climb Mount Everest," Doug Liman says, motioning to the slim treadmill desk tucked into the corner of his Tribeca office space. "It was originally for a project I was going to do with Tom Hardy [about Everest climber George Mallory]…compared to the movie I was making, the thought of scaling a mountain seemed restful." The 48-year-old director starts shaking his head slowly. "It was like, 'Well, there won't be any exo-suits, there won't be any aliens, there won't be the challenge of trying to get an honest performance out of...

According to Deadline, Sheldon Turner (Up in the Air, X-Men: First Class) has been hired by New Regency and Ubisoft to write a new draft of “Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell,” Ubisoft’s film adaptation of its popular videogame franchise. “American Hustle‘s” Eric Warren Singer wrote the most recent draft.
Doug Liman is set to direct that film and Tom Hardy is attached to star in the feature.
Liman, Hardy and Turner have also been collaborating with a film called Everest and is expected to begin shooting next year. Production is set to start for Splinter Cell this August for a 2015 release.
Project is the second major movie based on one of its properties that Ubisoft is looking to get on the bigscreen after setting up “Assassin’s Creed.”
Hardy will play Sam Fisher, a highly-trained special operative in a fictional black-ops operation called Echelon.

With Doug Liman signed on to direct, and Tom Hardy set for the lead role, the Splinter Cell movie is looking more and more promising with each passing day. Now, the film has a writer in the form of Up in the Air scribe Sheldon Turner. Savvy readers might remember that Hardy, Liman and Turner actually set out to make another movie together last year, when the three attempted to put together Sony’s Everest. That project is now postponed, thanks to Universal’s film of the same name, but it’s clear that this trio still wants to make some movie magic together.
Plot details are thin for the Splinter Cell adaptation but I would imagine that the script will focus on Sam Fisher, the protagonist from the video games. For those who don’t know, Fisher is a black-ops agent who works for the fictional Nsa group Third Echelon.

The film, from director Baltasar Kormákur (2 Guns) began production Monday in Italy, with Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke and John Hawkes playing four of the climbers who attempted the disastrous 1996 ascent of Mount Everest in the Himalayas, only to be thwarted with terrible conditions that led to the loss of many lives.

It's Dracula vs. Bane as Luke Evans' name has been added to the mix for Doug Liman's "The Summit" at Sony Pictures.
An adaptation of Jeffrey Archer's historical novel "Paths of Glory", the story deals with the mystery of George Mallory's ascent of Mount Everest. The mountain climber made several attempts to be the first to reach the summit before that of his Australian rival George Finch.
However Mallory and partner Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine never returned from their June 1924 climb. In 1999, Mallory's frozen body was found near the summit on the North Face, and debate has raged ever since about whether he was actually on his way down or up.
Tom Hardy was previously linked for the role of Mallory, seemingly dropped out due to scheduling, but is now apparently back onboard. Luke Evans ("The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," "Fast and Furious 6") was one of...

Exclusive: Doug Liman has signed with CAA. Liman had followed his longtime agent Adam Kanter to Resolution, but has returned to the CAA fold. Liman, who left his TV business at CAA, will be repped in all areas. The helmer, whose big credits include Mr. And Mrs. Smith, most recently completed Edge Of Tomorrow, the science fiction film for Warner Bros that stars Tom Cruise. He’s next committed to direct the recently retitled Sony Pictures historical film The Summit, which is slated to begin production in mid-March. That is the Sheldon Turner-scripted story of George Mallory, the famous British mountaineer who rallied a nation with his attempts to conquer Everest before his Australian rival George Finch. This has gone a couple different ways in casting, but now it looks like Tom Hardy might well play Mallory (he was first choice but temporarily dropped due to scheduling) and that Luke Evans might play Finch.

"Inception" star Tom Hardy was originally slated to take on the role of British mountaineer George Mallory in the film. Mallory disappeared on his third attempt to climb Everest in 1924.

Benedict Cumberbatch is now the front-runner to replace him, but all those other names are all said to be up for either the Mallory role or that of his Australian rival George Finch.

Benedict Cumberbatch is reportedly in line to replace Tom Hardy in upcoming drama Everest.
Doug Liman's film was set to star Hardy as British mountaineer George Mallory, who tried twice to scale Mount Everest during the 1920s before disappearing on the third attempt.
Deadline reports that scheduling conflicts have now forced Hardy to pull out, with Cumberbatch the frontrunner to replace him.
Several actors including Tom Hiddleston, James McAvoy, Henry Cavill, Matthew Goode, Dan Stevens and Joel Kinnaman are reportedly being considered to co-star as rival Australian climber George Finch.
Having failed to climb Everest in 1921 and 1922, Mallory and climbing partner Sandy Irvine vanished during a third attempt in 1924, and their bodies were not discovered until 1999. It is still unknown whether they had reached the summit before they died.

Baltasar Kormakur, the Icelandic-born director behind "Contraband" and this week's "2 Guns," understands the value of a good genre film. It's why he cited "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "Midnight Run," "Witness" and "Out of Sight" as some of his influences while discussing the new feature in an interview with HuffPost Entertainment last Sunday.

After years of working as a screenwriter, racking up credits such as “The Longest Day,” “X-Men: First Class,” and most notably “Up in the Air,” it looks like Sheldon Turner might finally get an opportunity to direct one of his projects. Relativity Media recently acquired the gritty action thriller “Borderland.” Turner will write the script, and has his eye towards directing the project as well. Described as a modern day "Magnificent Seven"-esque western, “Borderland” centers on a newly elected mayor in a town overrun by cartel violence. The mayor decides to hire a band of former and current Special Forces operatives, training them to fight back. Soon the town turns into a battleground with the operatives finding themselves in over their heads. The film is an attempt to give an authentic look at post-war life for elite soldiers. Turner has got a number of different projects on his plate aside from “Borderland.

Turner will begin working on the script after he completes work on his directorial debut Two Minutes to Midnight, Deadline reports.
Turner, who received an Oscar nomination for his work on Up in the Air, is also providing a screenplay for the Christian Bale-starring Everest.
Borderland is yet to receive a release date.

• Johnny Depp fans, get excited. The actor has committed to his next two projects: Wally Pfister’s sci-fi thriller Transcendence, and Barry Levinson’s Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass, both of which he’d been circling for a while. Transcendence will be the directorial debut for Pfister, an Oscar-winning cinematographer (for Inception in 2011), who has been Christopher Nolan’s go-to since Memento. The details of the project remain sparse, but the logline teases that the film is about a scientist who has his brain uploaded into a computer. Depp will go straight from Transcendence to Black Mass, based on the...

Tom Hardy is fast becoming a champion of causes via the projects he develops. He’s already working on two separate films about animal poaching and trafficking, but is now turning his attention to the human race with post-traumatic stress disorder drama Samarkand.Hardy’s set to play an Sas solider returning from operations in the Middle East. After breaking Batman and scaling Mount Everest, Deadline reports that, in his next movie battle, Tom Hardy “tackles the topical hot-button issue of post-traumatic stress disorder,” presumably then getting post-traumatic stress disorder into one of those sleeper holds until it finally chokes out and stops affecting so many of our veterans. In the film titled Samarkand—after Uzbekistan's famed ancient city, at the epicenter of Silk Road—Hardy will play a soldier returning from duty in the Middle East who finds he has trouble readjusting to normal U.S. life. “Aaaarrrghh, you can’t get decent silk here!” a ...

There’s just no stopping Tom Hardy, is there? After breaking out with Inception, the man has been on an absolute roll. In recent months, we’ve seen him attach himself to a real-time thriller called Locke, the upcoming Splinter Cell adaptation, Daniel Espinosa’s Child 44, the gangster flick Cicero, a Mount Everest drama and a passion project of his titled Animal Rescue. Now it’s time to add one more to that list as the actor has signed on to star in Greg Williams’ Samarkand.
The film will have Hardy playing a “Special Air Service soldier who comes back from serving in the Middle East and has a hard time adjusting back to normal life as he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. ” Seems a bit generic but if Hardy is attaching himself to it, than the material must be good. Or it’s that he’s just eager to work with Williams again,...

1.) Though a deal fell apart with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn, Sony Pictures is still determined to hit a June start date for their potential Denzel Washington franchise The Equalizer. Enter Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt, who has reportedly entered discussions to helm the thriller loosely based on the '80s TV series. Washington's character is a former covert operations officer who hates injustice and devotes himself to helping people who are being victimized. The film is reportedly budgeted at a lean $50 million, $20 million of which is Washington's customary fee. No, Gotham’s adversaries aren’t planning a battle atop the world’s highest mountain in an epic and snowy Batman franchise reboot. Instead Batman and Bane will race to the top of Everest in opposing tales of mountaineering.
Dark Knight Rises stars Christian Bale and Tom Hardy are both in early talks to star in two very different movies about reaching the summit of Mt. Everest. Bale, who already has several post-Dark Knight Rises films in the works with directors Terrence Malick and David O. Russell, is rumoured to be interested in taking on Everest’s summit in a retelling of the tragic 1996 expedition. Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur (The Deep, 101 Reykajvik, Contraband) is in talks to direct the film which is still in the development stages.

Actor to star in Baltasar Kormákur's disaster movie based on real storm on Everest that killed eight climbers
Christian Bale is set to star in the mountain-climbing disaster movie Everest, according to Deadline.
Bale's role is not clear at this stage, but the film is based on real-life events that took place in 1996 as three separate crews tried to climb the world's tallest mountain. A freak storm hit Everest, leaving eight climbers dead in its wake. The story was made famous by Jon Krakauer in the book Into Thin Air, which described how he survived to tell the tale.
Krakauer's tome will be among a number of sources used for the film version, which is being put together at Britain's Working Title production company. Iceland's Baltasar Kormákur (The Deep, Contraband) will direct.

Insert The Dark Knight Rises rivalry joke here. I cannot do it because it’s too early in the morning. But that is the joke that’s being passed around the interwebs, as it has been announced that both Tom Hardy and Christian Bale are working on Everest – which, by the way, is the title of two different films.
Tom Hardy was there first, signing up for Everest with director Doug Liman, about George Mallory, the first man to attempt to reach the peak of that fabled mountain that everyone and their grandma now climbs. Bale, not to be outdone, has set up another film called Everest with Working Title Films and director Baltasar Kormakur (Contraband). Bale’s movie, though, will focus on a 1996 expedition that ran into a storm, causing the deaths of eight explorers. It’s the same story that Jon Krakauer’s book Into Thin Air focused on,...

At least one project is in the works and a new one from Working Title and Universal makes two, with Christian Bale attached to star.Justin Isbell wrote the latest draft of Everest, which focuses on a disastrous 1996 expedition to scale the mountain. Three different groups of climbers were struck by a monstrous, blinding storm and eight of them ended up dead. Originally chronicled by Jon Krakauer’s bestseller Into Thin Air (itself turned into a TV movie in 1997), the new film has been sourced from interviews and books by survivors.Contraband man Baltasar Kormakur (who knows cold conditions after shooting Icelandic true-life shipwreck tale The Deep) is stepping into his director’s climbing gear for the movie, which also has Emmet/Furla Films involved.

In a movie climate that’s mostly concerned with alien invasions and superhero showdowns, we haven’t gotten a good, old-fashioned man vs. nature disaster movie in a while. So, in tribute to the summer that brought us both Deep Impact and Armageddon, and the summer that brought us both Dante’s Peak and Volcano, Hollywood now has two movies about climbing Mount Everest in development. The first one, that we’ve already heard about, is called Everest, it’s going to be directed by Doug Liman, and it stars Tom Hardy as George Mallory, a British man who tried to scale Everest three times in the 1920s and eventually died on the mountain. Deadline has the rundown of the second Everest film that’s now being developed. It, confusingly, is also going by the simple title of Everest, but it’s going to tell the much more recent tale of a big winter storm that hit...

They once fought for supremacy of Gotham City. Now, they're looking to conquer the same mountain.
Christian Bale and Tom Hardy, respectively the hero and villain of "The Dark Knight Rises," are once again at odds as they're starring in two separate movies about Mount Everest, according to Deadline.
Bale just signed on for "Everest," which will focus on the massive 1996 storm that hit three separate expeditions and claimed a total of eight lives. The film will be directed by Baltasar Kormakur, who knows a thing or two about the freezing cold after directing "The Deep," and is based on the nonfiction book "Into Thin Air," written by Jon Krakauer, one of the survivors of the disaster.
Meanwhile, Hardy is attached to "Everest," which concentrates on Sir George Mallory's 1920 attempt to be the first man to reach the mountain's peak. This film will be directed by Doug Liman, who knows...
