Most of the calls this week share a common theme: miscommunication. And it's relevant, seeing as LAPD officers have to deal with all manner of different foreign languages on the job. There are varying degrees of subtlety as to the execution of this theme - say, having the radio dispatch go offline, or Sherman's blown eardrum after a shotgun assault - but this is a first-rate episode, mixing humor, characterization and new faces.
To that end, Cooper's new partner is a positive addition. IT makes sense that John's burnt out as a training officer, and a veteran is much more his speed (as Lucy Lie proved last season). Plus, Lucero's junior-high jokes are amusing.
I hate that Tammi's back, but it at least she's not just there to be stupid.
8/10
