Warning: Spoilers
There's some pretty funny stuff here. Joel's parents are at the center of it. They are in the process of divorcing. They are making it a nightmare at Joel's nightclub by coming in and annoying the guests (especially his mother). They are still convinced that Joel is getting married and is going to be a father. He hasn't had the courage to explain about her moving to Chicago and having an abortion. Midge continues to work for the Ford show and manages to get get a joke in (her first and only one) which he flubs. She has a big public confrontation with him, probably losing her job. Meanwhile, Abe comes to realize that he misspelled Carol Channing's name in a review he wrote. It is the first typo he has made in his life. The fallout from this is really very good.

Desire to win

Warning: Spoilers
Midge's mistake of a typo is the catalyst for most of the drama in this episode. It's both funny and cringe-worthy to watch her attempt to fix her mistake, only to make it worse with her apology bombing.

What's particularly great about this episode is how it highlights one of Midge's key traits - her overwhelming desire to win. This drive is both her greatest strength and her greatest character flaw, and it's fascinating to watch her struggle with it. It's a reminder that just because you're talented and passionate about something, it doesn't mean you're infallible.

Meanwhile, Joel's own issues with his parents' separation add a layer of emotional depth to the episode. The show has always excelled at balancing humor and heart, and "Typos and Torsos" is no exception.

Overall quality is high, but...

On that particular episode, the direction and choreography skills border on insanity. I am sure that several apparently mundane scenes over the series required as much work, if not more, than the spectacular demonstrations displayed here ; but nothing can justify the amount of craft and effort, and, yes, money, involved in the making of this show.

Or maybe it's for the sake of art.

And talking about insane talent, there again, the production puts Mr Shalhoub's abilities to stress, and gratifying results.

Makes you realize how talented the whole cast is, not looking even slightly pale nor weak against his performance.

Of course, the brilliant dialogue helps. They sure all have a blast with the material. And so do I.

Cringeworthy. Annoying, not funny.

Warning: Spoilers
Starting with Abe, no one, including Abe, could be as obsessive compulsive and paranoid as he was about misspelling Carol Chaning (sp on purpose - Channing). No one would ever call every Village Voice subscriber because of it. Nor would he write a 1500 word correction. Follow that with the most annoying couple, Shirley and Moishe. She went on and on to the extent I had the feeling the writers ran out of ideas and they couldn't figure out why they were doing with her what they were doing. There was no relevance, no end game, no payoff. I wanted to join the other nightclub customers and run away. Finally, as volatile as Midge can be, I can't see anyone being so self-righteous and threaten her employment. Nor should we be forced to believe the egoistical head of the Number One talk show would allow such insubordination. The Ethan story didn't work. Overall, ugh.
