Made for niche crowd
tanelson-9102327 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Many of the lower rated reviews are complaining it is lacking in horrific elements. These may be forgiven, as like yours truly, they were dumb enough to watch this, while not being so steeped in culture and art as its core audience.

It rarely hits a comedic beat, though it may offer more for fans of shock-jock humor (abuse, rape, poverty) might have better signal to noise ratio in this regard.

The acting is fair, though it often comes across as stilted due to chewing through punchlines which seem like poor renditions of terrible two sentence horror stories. Additionally crass language is often emphasized giving a juvenile tone, which is kind of humorous, like the skit from I Think You Should Leave Now where it is adult's night at the haunted exhibit, so you can cuss.

The camera work is fine, though at times somewhat flat (shot, reverse shot), it is only distracting for Jimmy Headshot's tales, which I think are intended to be wink, wink in regards to the film's quality overall.

The sound is excellent, and the soundtrack is actually used appropriately and effectively.

There is a fun kill scene, there were many others which felt like chaff.

The story is cognizable, it, for better or worse, lacks the enigmatic quality of what I regard as a true good bad film, it isn't funny for its incompetence. Nor does the director seem egotistical or out of touch, they are cast but not in a central or flattering role.

There are scenes which might qualify as gross-out humor but the effects are not there for it, which may be a blessing.

If none of this turns you off, you can take the given rating as gospel, personally and I imagine for many it will be closer to 1-3/10. There seems to be passion and awareness but could use much funnier and tighter dialogue, and some of it would look better on the editing room floor.

What horror?
curt-835655 June 2023
Numerous times cast members seen moving in the background apart from the scene. For a horror film, it was not scary in the least and despite having gratuitous blood from zombies, it was a joke.

The ventriloquist material was pretty immature and lousy.

The videography was on the level of a high school play at best and really did not add much to the story. The trailer park scenes were appropriate given that "trailer park trash" would be my description for the production crew, videographers, and most of the actors in general. At nearly two hours, it was pretty much more than I could take during a single sitting.

Where's the horror?
skyboy-3341125 July 2023
This movie just isn't good. Unfortunately while the director manages to work with his budget, the end result is a haphazard mess with few to no scares and ultimately ends up being a snooze fest.

This would be much more paletteable if the director actually knew what horror was. Unfortunately (and unsurprisingly) the director seems to go for cheap scares and puts very little effort into the craft. As scathing as that may seem, I'm just trying to spare those who may blindly stumble upon this movie and think it may be worth watching. Not the case sadly. The film needs to be ironed out more if there is any hope of future for the director and his crew.

Not Good.
spraynard_krueger29 September 2023
Terrible movie. If you value your life and your time listen to this review. The only reason this movie has a high score is because it's got a very devoted fanbase of ten year olds too hopped up on sugar to know what horror and comedy actually are.

The first scene of the movie is supposed to be bad on purpose, and I was initially intrigued at this because I thought that there was no way that the acting and jokes could get worse. I was so totally wrong. Not only did the jokes fall flat, but they looked like they even made the actors uncomfortable. The acting even got worse! It's just impossible to me that a movie like this can have a rating so high.

Great parody of classic 90s nostalgia
jgoins-2059723 March 2023
I spent last year reading all of the Shingle books to prep for this. The Shingles book series ranges from "10 year old boys high on meth and mountain dew writing a Goosebumps parody" to really solid books that deserve to be fleshed out into full fledged novels or separate series.

I laughed a lot, and after some books I showered a lot.

I say all of that to say, Shingles the Movie strikes a great balance of immature humor, good writing, and good acting made better by a director and crew that know what they are doing.

Only reason I cant rate this higher is it needed more Buick (well and I cant take it to 11).

A massively enjoyable indie anthology without too many flaws
kannibalcorpsegrinder7 December 2023
Sitting around a campfire, a group of teens decide to pass the time telling ghost stories while waiting for their leader to return from an assignment.

The Good Stor(ies): The Legend of Jimmy Headshot-In the middle of a zombie invasion, a headstrong gamer realizes that his years spent playing video games has prepared him to battle the onslaught of the dead. This was a highly enjoyable and fun way to start this one. The series of gags here setting up the universe present with the invasion of the zombies in the area setting up his usage of the home-made tools to put them down. This results in some fun with the comedic interactions featuring the practical encounters and CGI gore that make for a highly enjoyable start to this one even though it's so brief a little bit more info on his video-game background to help set that up a little wouldn't have been a bad thing.

Put Your Hand in My Ass-Desperate to continue his career, a young man is gifted a ventriloquist doll by his dad who soon comes to believe the doll is alive with murderous intentions. Overall, this might be a rather familiar and formulaic entry but has a lot to like about it. The whole concept of the murderous ventriloquist dummy looking to revive his old act through his own machinations is something that can be seen coming from a mile away, but beyond that there's quite a lot to like here with the interactions taking place here fueled by the dummy's outdated references and politically-incorrect jokes clashing with modern values. The lines and routines are usually rather funny, and with the obvious outcome being seen coming it doesn't make this part any less fun to get through which makes for a fun if not perfect segment.

Aliens Wrecked Our Kegger-Preparing for a massive blowout, a college fraternity in the middle of their annual blowout bash finds the proceedings crashed by aliens looking to assimilate into the culture. There was quite a lot to like with this, which is the best segment in the film. The overall setup is another slightly obvious but that doesn't make this quite fun with the unraveling of the story about aliens looking to party with the fraternity that's misconstrued as an abduction attempt. It's all the more fun once the real intention is known and brings about a series of goofy, cheesy interactions which are immensely fun with quite a lot of quips being offered which isn't at all scary in the slightest but is a minor quibble to get over with this one.

Just Say Gnome-After coming into contact with a special garden gnome, a woman enters into a partnership with the creature only for his murderous tendencies to impact their business. This was another incredibly fun segment that manages to get quite a lot to like about it. The inherent stupidity of the lead is gut-busting hilarious with so many of the situations focused on the comical naive nature she has which is carried throughout the segment with the way he carries out the various interludes of him killing and eating those he needs to in order to produce the drug they're selling. This all comes with some fine jokes, comic innuendoes, and a few decent gore gags that come to take place in yet another segment that has some less-than-stellar scares like the previous segment although, again, it's not an issue.

The Bad Stor(ies): Zombies Ate My Homework-Sitting around a campfire, a group of teens decide to pass the time telling ghost stories while waiting for their leader to return from an assignment. As a whole, this is a pretty enjoyable if overlong part of the film. With the idea of the teens being left alone and telling each other stories to each other as they pass the time, this setup is a perfect means of introducing this type of feature with the segments each getting a fine bit of setup and allows the various segments to come together quite nicely. Some of the jokes feel repetitive and hammer home aspects that are brought up in the segments proper/ the final gag with the zombies is really only memorable for the bloodshed and gore on display which is a bit of a drag for the weakest segment here but still has enough to like about it.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language, Graphic Violence, Brief Nudity, drug use, and sexual content.

You'll Laugh, you'll cry (from laughing)
wpavlik2-786-36586812 April 2023
I have long loved the books by the Authors and Dragons crew and learning that a Shingles Movie was coming absolutely made me giddy with anticipation.

This movie is hilarious, but kind of dumb. Like, Napoleon Dynamite dumb. It might take a couple of viewings to "get it".

Without spoiling the stories, I will say that most of them keep SUPER close to the books, but there are of course differences. (like none of the characters in the movies are "kids", that would be just too horrible)

You'll love Buick, You'll think Jimmy is a total tool. You will never look at garden gnomes or venquilitrist dummies the same way either!

My favorite short is probably Zombies Wrecked my Kegger, but I will say that Just Say Gnome is... Something else.

I only take off one star because some of the effects aren't very special, but it's a very thriftily made movie! Watch it. You'll have a blast.

Cheesy Horror at it's best!
millerxraytech1 May 2023
WARNING: Definitely not a movie for the faint of heart or for anyone that is easily offended!!

This movie is based on a few select books from the Shingles book series - and they hit the nail right on the head!! The movie is a crazy, gross, hilarious ride from start to finish and very on brand for the A&D guys!!

By the way, you should totally check out the Shingles series, the Authors & Dragons podcast and the Calamity Janes, and check out the authors' other books!! Trust me, you won't be disappointed!! The A&D podcast is how I found several of my favorite authors such as Rick Gualtieri, John Hartness, Drew Hayes, R E Carr, E M Kaplan, and so many others!!

A fun anthology of stories.
DarylJGittings30 December 2023
Shingles: the Movie is a fun anthology of stories directed by Steve Rudzinski (the CarousHell series). In "Shingles the movie", we have the four cooter scouts sitting around a campfire telling stories while they're waiting for their scoutmaster to catch dinner.

The first story involves "Jimmy" and a zombie apocalypse. It's the shortest story and my least favorite.

Story number two features "Sloppy" the Ventriloquist dummy. It's pretty funny! The actor "Ben Dietels" reminds me of Ed Helms. Lol! Anyway the story is loaded with laughs and crude humor.

The third story involves Aliens crashing a fraternity party. Watch as the Aliens and the Frat compete against each other in beer games.

My favorite and the final story is about "Dusty the Gnome". He's a garden Gnome that poops cocaine! This is probably the most comical of the stories. You'll never look at garden Gnomes the same after this.

I'm not familiar with the Shingles books, so I came in as a fan of a couple the actresses.

It was the best kind of cheesy
summerealm-9366010 April 2023
The authors from the popular podcast Authors and Dragons have been writing books in the Shingles series, once a month, for a long time now. They are usually a little more gross, outrageous, irreverent, and "out there" than their normal series. I think it is their version of brain dumps.

And now, there is a movie!!

Shingles, the pervy adult version of Goosebumps.

This is without a doubt, a lower budget movie, but it is a lot of fun! What's not to love about a talking puppet, zombies, a coked up killer gnome and battling aliens in an epic beer pong game?

I love that most of the authors of the books make an appearance in the movie.

This movie is gross, crude and totally everything I love about a good B movie. I can't recommend this enough.

Wrong yet so awesome

Warning: Spoilers
This movie has everything.

Camping, zombies, aliens, a talking puppet and a talking gnome. The acting was horribe yet superb. Warning. This movie may not be for you if you don't have an insane sense of humor, like parody or weird sexual situations. Seriously if you havent looked up t-rex, the easter bunny or santa clause on porn hub or something just as crazy, dont bother. You will not like this completely awesome movie. This movie showcases the best of the worst of humanity in startling clarity. It was awesome! I hope there is another movie coming! I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. I sincerely love everything about this movie. I'd rate it higher if I could.

Quite possibly the most important movie of our time
dimlutine3 May 2023
Shingles the Movie simply must be watched. One is made aware of why life is worth living after enjoying the film. The acting is exactly what you'd expect. The special effects use every single penny of the budget, and possibly a couple more. The direction is superb. The big gun, however, is the writing. This is seriously some of the funniest stuff out there. Much, much funnier than any Hollywood comedy written these days. It's not just funny, it's smart-funny.. and by that I mean it's stupid. In a smart way. I'm fairly sure that if one doesn't enjoy this movie, they're probably actual serial killers, fascists, or politicians.
