The Wah-wah is All Methed-up
Sandoz14 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A married couple and some friends with the usual interpersonal dramas must contend with a hazardous contamination (some kind of concentrated methadrine) of their local area's water supply. Tensions already festering are made worse as their situation becomes more desperate as they begin to dehydrate.

I generally root for ultra low-budget films to surprise me and make up for their scarcity of budget with a cleverness of plot and a display of filmmaking talent. Thirst is undeniably well-made even though it appears to have been produced for mere pennies compared to big studio productions. Unfortunately, however, the scenario sinks into silliness as the story drips along... Spoilers below as to what annoyed me about the film and warranted my three star rating:

A local water shortage, especially one lasting beyond a couple of days (apparently in this case it seems to be about two weeks) would not be ignored by local or national aid groups; there would be assistance arriving at some point with bottled water or water buffalo trucks providing help.

Not once, but twice, the home of the sheltering group is invaded by intruders who walk in through unlocked doors. C'mon, it's not the 19th century--who doesn't lock their doors anymore whether at home or not? The house is not out in the country, it's in the friggin' suburbs. I lose sympathy for characters when they're written as this stupid.

In the final act, the husband finds a freshwater pond via an internet search and the group depart to camp and partake of the clean water there. However, the next day they awaken to find about twenty other cars nearby with other people who had the same idea. And then soon again, two tough guys with one shotgun commandeer the pond and demand payment for anyone who wants to fill up water. C'mon, all those people and NO-ONE else brought firearms along, also? This story is taking place in America...the tough guys wouldn't be the only ones who brought firearms with them. And the cherry on this inane plot twist is that one of thugs just happens to be the abusive boyfriend that the husband cold-cocked with a 2 by 4 earlier after he beat-up his girlfrind who, distraught, committed suicide at the couple's house (who must have been buried in the couple's backyard because we never see any Coroner arrive to remove her body).

A meandering paranoia thriller
thefuturemoviecritic9 September 2023
Thirst is a strange little movie that starts off interesting enough. Suggestions that something might be off. Insomnia mysteriously spreading through town. Thirst promises an interesting paranoia thriller that unfortunately never manages to take off and instead meanders throughout. The interest wears off right after the buildup, as unfortunately it never delivers the buildup it promises. For the most part, the actors make it work, with the exception of Scotty Walker in the Trent role, a performance of a mentally handicapped character that is outdated to the point of offensiveness. The filmmakers should still be commended for their effort because between occasionally hammy dialogue, especially when it comes to the conspiracies, there are some nice moments interspersed throughout, and with a supposed budget of $50,000 the production looks mostly professional. I just it lived up to its full potential.

So many plot flaws
ambermarie-0127221 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The cinematography was pretty good and they did a lot with what I assume was a small budget.

Small town water contamination of...Meth! They think it'll take a week to drain and clean the water plant.

No attempt to leave town. Between two cars, they don't have enough gas to get anywhere but a local creek and back; certainly not a bus station or airport or any family or friend with a well water source. All stores are out of bottled water, so they all just close immediately. Without bottled water, they just can't do business at all. No taxi can reach you? No government evacuation? No national disaster relief? Don't even bother calling anyone but each other in these trying times. Why even address these options in our plot at all?

Let's just see if we can wait it out, I guess.

Brian Villalobos does a pretty good job with his character, considering the nonsense. I may never get over the fact that he never goes through withdrawals or feel addicted to the tap water. This is Meth, guys. He is definitely going to fight to keep drinking that water. Even before he knows there is Meth in it, it's going to be the only thing he wants and he's going to think it's the best thing ever.

The only way this movie could have been redeemed is if, at the end, a government official showed up acting completely confused and annoyed that they even found themselves in this ignorant situation. But alas...

After all the nonsensical threat of violence and desperation, we end on the sweet relief of our main characters finding peace at a small, still body of water where they fill their reusable bottle. After all, drinking water straight from a small lake never hurt anyone, right? They may just survive the next few days until the local water commission finishes cleaning the tank after all!

I'm not mad. I'm just really disappointed, guys.

Not quite there yet, but undeniably chilling and fascinating

Something's wrong. Some folks suddenly cant sleep anymore. And they suddenly get agitated about the smallest things and keep hooked on repetitive weird behaviour like mowing the grass endlessly... WHAT"S going on?

Quite a mesmirizing start, with a long delayed explanation what is causing loved ones to suddenly start behaving out of whack. The suspense and the spookiness is quite good at the start.

Later on this movie is more off a battle for survival, a rather bleak and suffocating battle for survival. That is the lesser part, but still good enough for me...

I was quite sursprised that such an unknown cast of actors did have such great acting performances and actor's chemistry. Chapeau!

It is not a really exhilirating thriller, NOT at all, but it really has something going for it, and that is a bleak and slowburning suspense that keeps on coming. Solid direction for such a low budget movie!
