Warning: Spoilers
Whereas last year's premiere, "The Contingency", opened with a bang, "Liberty" goes for a more conventional, episodic Person of Interest approach having not returned with an ongoing cliffhanger from the end of Season 2. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, particularly as the 45 minutes are stuffed full of story continuation and moving pieces that it flies by very quickly.

The case of the week is a welcome change of pace from the plethora of insanity which occurred during "Zero Day" and "God Mode". The storyline itself is not the most complex (which is partly a relief as some episodes tend to stumble as a result of becoming overly convoluted) but is insanely fun, providing great character moments and action packed brawls that state "hey, we don't have to always take ourselves too seriously!" The opening is particularly entertaining whilst simultaneously reintroducing our favourite characters doing what they do best.

The episode also sees Shaw (Sarah Shahi) making her debut as a regular. Whilst reception towards her has been polarising throughout the PoI community, I feel this was her best showing, as much of her icy persona has been transformed into cheeky zingers and a more spunky attitude. Whilst her transition hasn't been perfect (I feel she needs to ditch some of the Reese-isms and become more of her own character a bit), I'd expect that this dynamic should strengthen as the writers and Shahi become have become completely grounded with her.

Root (Amy Acker) also enters the episode as a newly promoted regular, and what the impact she makes in her (very short) three scenes is outstanding! Her final monologue concerning truths, and her relationship with the Machine provides is arguably the episode's standout scene, both establishing the character as a imminent threat as well as an outstanding exhibition of Acker's acting ability. It was definitely one of the most chilling moments the series has conjured so far and a fantastic way to end the show.

The seeds of future story lines are planted throughout the episode, such as a brief encounter with fan-favourite Elias and the revelation that Carter is on a personal mission to take down the notorious HR, and things are looking good for the third season of this fascinating show. On the whole, don't expect this episode to be as mind-blowing as those which preceded it but you can guarantee to find a bit of story progression and plenty of highlights which capture the essence of both the show's gripping nature as well as its more light-hearted side.

Things are going to get complicated.

The third season has started with the addition of Shaw to the team of dead vigilantes. And though she is beautiful, she's dangerous. With Taraji P Henson and Jim Caviziel in their respective roles the new season has brought with it unknown possibilities. The Machine has hidden itself in an unknown location and has chosen Root to be her new contact in the world. Why though? Maybe we'll find out this fall. Now this is all about the last season.

This season is just beginning and the first episode reveals some hints as to what might come. Still everything is shrouded in the realm of uncertainty. The fate of Harold, John, Shaw, Carter and Fusco are too deeply connected now and we can only hope that there is no fallout from the government agency which was brilliantly tricked by the Machine. Although no new characters have been introduced yet, the day is still young and we'll never know what twist the fates may take though definitely the Machine does.

Until next week, that's all.

The Cuban Cigars

Shaw has team-up with Reese and Finch, and now is helping them. The Machine delivers to Finch the number of Jack Salazar, a sailor who joined the navy as an alternative to go to prison offered by the judge. Reese follows him and learns that he is loyal to his friends and fights very well. He protects his friend Robert Johnson in a bar and he gives a couple of cigars he had stolen from his commander to Jack. When Jack is hunted down by a serious gang of diamond smugglers and Johnson is kidnapped, Reese and Shaw have to help them to save their lives with the help of Fusco. Carter is demoted to a patrol officer, but she continues to chase the head of the HR, now with the support of Elias. Meanwhile, Root is interned in a mental institution, but she has problems with her psychiatrist, Dr. Ronald Carmichael, since he has forbidden her to have access to any electronic device.

"Liberty" is an entertaining episode of "Person of Interest", and Reese now has a partner, Shaw. Their number is not a perpetrator, but a navy sailor that was involuntarily involved in a case of smuggling diamonds from Afrika. Carter now is a patrol officer since HR pulled the strings to damage her reputation. The psychopath Root was spared by Finch, Reese and Shaw, and now will certainly bring problems to the clinic where Finch interned her. My vote is eight.

Two New Regulars Joining the Show!

Warning: Spoilers
Villianess Root played by Amy Acker is in a loony bin and is kept away from computers and technology but that does not stop her from being dangerous.

Shaw played by Sarah Shahi is the female version of John Reese. As she has or is trying to developed from being a one dimensional character. As she did show some of that.

But still it is fighting for airtime and character development. We see Reese being a bad*ss and Finch still being the brains behind the operation and the boss if you can say that.

Carter is demoted to patrol due to HR and that Lionel has a few good moments in.

We see a former sailor who has but can't stop being in trouble. Due to his bad attitude and behavior. As he is part of a bigger thing. Which the team must help him out of.

A lot of room for character development in the third season for Root and Shaw. Feel that Root will be even more trouble for our team.

Below Average
diligentdrool25 September 2013
I was eagerly waiting for Person of Interest's season 3 premiere after the outstanding S2 finale that was 'God Mode' and I have to say the S3 premiere was very underwhelming, all things said.

The storyline was a little weak, and the writers seemed to be trying to juggle too many balls at one and it just didn't click.

The biggest negative was Shaw. I was willing to give Shaw a chance, despite people getting annoyed with her by the end of S2 itself, but I am very disappointed after this episode - if anything, it seems like I was wrong. Shaw just seems robotic, boring and tries too hard to be "badass". It doesn't help that Sarah Shahi is really not a good actress.

Too many characters struggling for screen space, in the end at the cost of one of the leads - Finch (surprisingly, given his 'the hacker who can worm him way to any information' act is one of the show's best aspects). The fact that this show treats the 'tech support' as one of its leads was what made it unique. That and the Machine, of course!

In the end, weak POI, narration that was all over the place, too much Shaw and her 'badassery' and too little Finch made it a below average episode - AND POOR BY POI STANDARDS.

Maybe I am jumping the gun here, but really there was nothing wrong with just Reese and Finch, with Carter and Lionel just helping out. Root and Elias are great as always, but Shaw is really an 'extra' that this show didn't need so soon.

I hope I am wrong, but this seems like a case of fixing it when it ain't broke. Thats never good. Prove me wrong Nolan. I hope you do.

Please get rid of Shaw

Warning: Spoilers
I wish the show, would go back to the quality of the first season. Shaw is the worst character, as she has no redeeming qualities what so ever. I can't understand why the writers, have dropped the ball with this character? I just wish this episode concentrated on John Reese and Carter.

Shaw: the third wheel
BirdmanT710 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I was really looking forward to the third season but I was hoping this "Shaw" character will only make some guest appearances not become a regular?.

This season started OK, nothing like the second season opening. I read another review here and I agree with almost everything I read. The story line is too weak, instead of focusing on the people who planted the virus, the show is trying to plant new seeds with new people behind corruption to come back to. Yet the focus is some how shifted to nothing that ties the last two seasons such as the people who wanted to inflict virus in the computer Finch built.

I also can not stand this "Shaw" character played by Sarah Shahi who can't act to save her life. I mean please can someone tell me how is this 5"3 midget girl who has no neck gets to be a " "badass""?. Her acting SUCKS and its make you wonder what is her function in this show?. I don't know what Nolan was thinking when he casted her, there are plenty more believable actress who could have played "Shaw", yet Reese was doing fine with the other two cops Carter and Fusco as back up; even if they added the character of "Zoe Morgan" to the cast it would have been a balance to Reese, because of her resources and there is a chemistry between the two.

The problem is the character of "Shaw", she is now become like this third wheel and gets in the way of the story. This show at the heart is the relationship between Finch and Reese and this little clown "Shaw" is just become like noise in the middle with no purpose, I must admit that I personally don't like "Sarah Shahi" because she is a terrible actress and does not belong on this show, she can stick to movies like "Bullet to the Head" with Sly.

What I miss about the show more of Carter, Fusco and Elias, who we now see less of screen time, because of "Shaw". I like "Elias" who ads flavor to this show, there is less of him now too. I think there is just too many people now and the narrative is not as focused as it was in the first two seasons. I rarely watch regular TV shows but this is one of the most intelligent contemporary shows that touches some of the issues of our computer culture today and its kind of now becoming just another action show.
